Barbarian Invasion is the BEST!

Ойындар

Welcome to a Video Discussion on why I think Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion is the Best Expansion/DLC in Total War History.
I believe it is because of how it is able to, set the mood and feel of the era, and, secondly, the New innovative mechanics, which were so good, that all of them are still used to this day.
Although others, such as Kingdoms, Age of Charlemagne, and Fall of the Samurai, for example, are great also.
Thank You to everyone for voting and posting your opinions in the survey. : )

BI is my favorite but I do like the map areas with Kingdoms, it's just more of sexy Medieval but in more places, albeit in a bit smaller pieces. But nothing will ever beat playing as the Western Roman Empire on Hard/Hard, because I ain't sweaty enough for very hard, and like to RP a bit.

The reason I love barbarian invasion is primarily because I love this time period of late antiquity where the world was into a long and painful proces of change and set the stage for the troublesome and confusing history of Europe. When it comes to representing a time period as accurate as possible, late antiquity is the most accurate period portrayed in Total War (Barbarian Invasion and Attila).

@@toReasonWhy This. Historical total war is all about this. Rome and Barbarian Invasion even talks about this in the faction selection screens, where they talk about strong leaders and good tactics. Total war was always about being able to overcome great tactical and strategic challenges, even when you're playing the easier nations like the Romans or the Carthaginians.

My favorite thing to do in BI was play as the Franks and ally with the WRE serving them as mercenaries and demanding payment until they stopped and I destroyed the WRE and recreated Charlemagne’s empire, then sending an army to Jerusalem when rebels or the Sassanians take over. You should do a Franks campaign Melkor.

Barbarian invasion had both culture and religion. -160% public order for max forigen culture and religion. It had the most punishing public order of any total war game, sort of realistic tbh, it slowed blobbing as well and incentivized fighting your own culture/religion.

Personally, I went with BI just because it's my favourite and I still enjoy Rome 1 more than any other Total War. Kingdoms is larger in overall content, and I have awesome memories exploring the new world in the Aztec campaign (I was a kid back then so I had no idea what America actually looked like on a map, so it literally was exploring a new world for me at the time). But I never enjoyed Medieval 2's engine as much as Rome's, so BI just beats it out for me.

Recently, I was playing Kingdoms (Americas) and I discovered general can get a trait giving FORCED MARCH according to description ("X% movement bonus and gives armies the ability to forced march" if I remember well). It's interesting for me, although I don't know how to activate it, it was not written anywhere. I thought force march is a new idea in Rome 2, but it looks like it was introduced much earlier. So that's right, Kingdoms and Barbarian Invasion gave many important features used in current total war games.

Imagine buying a dlc to a game that adds a few hundred more hours of insanely fun campaigns that are extremely memorable. Literally a concept non-existent in modern games. Barbarian invasion in my opinion, was amazing. The WRE gives you the feeling of “I’m a huge country that is failing and facing a storm in the east.” I was absolutely terrified when I ran into my first horde… I played Rome 1 on my iPad for a couple years and thought “this expansion looks cool, I’ll role play as the western Roman Empire and secure my borders.” It was crazy chaotic at first but I was able to mobilize to the point where I could go on the offensive and as soon as I took out the last Frankish city, boom. Right back to the beginning of the game with huge panic setting in. I tried to contain them outside of my borders to the east of the Rhine, but they seemed invincible. Once I finally weakened them enough to where they permanently withdrew, I got a message saying they were destroyed. Little did I know at the time, that meant they ran into the Huns.

Somewhat related to this, I was so let down by MATN's new Troy playthrough. Not because he stopped the serie and made a live, rather that it lacked soul. When he made a 17 episodes long serie on BI, he put a lot of story telling in it. Newer total wars, even though I really like them, just miss something

Also, don't forget that 40+ episode rtw series, which inspired this channel so much. And then same for his med 2 denmark one. Many a True Nerd did great with the old titles, with that roleplay style, but I 100% agree, the ability to play like that is lacking in the newer titles. (Although I love them also, it's for differnt reasons and they miss a lot)

@@MelkorGG The newer total wars feel... quantity made. For example, in Rome 1/Med 2 I played 1 campaign for 2-3 weeks, maybe even a month, wheter I was rushing(200). Now, I can finish a campaign in 1 week, and it gets really repetitive. There are some glimpses that change the way you play but those heavily changed since mid 2000s. Back then, you had a lot of ways to build up your regions differently, have different army composition etc. Now, not so much. Even in Troy, which I enjoy so much right now, its a situation I build X here, then I need Y there. Rarely do I go off this path, and only when there is something specific. Its even worse when I compare to older newer titles(i.e Rome 2 and Attila) in which you HAD to build specific stuff to keep going and it be profitable.

I love how in BI the factions are very different from each other even compared to rtw based on their starts alone. WRE and ERE are very big for a total war start and struggling, the hordes have their unique playthroughs. Persia is probably the most like a typical total war campaign. I would say that i think ERE is a little too easy even on the higher difficulties since they can get a lot of money quickly. WRE is always a fun challenge and unique campaign.

My problem with barbarian invasion is how easy you can just destroy most barbarian factions early because they start most of the time with one region only, plus the barbarian ai being dumb and staying still while playing rome, the ease roman factions can stomp barbarians because of the ai cheating and the unpredictability and lack of rebel roman factions (with this i mean it would have been way more better and fair that you had iberian roman rebels, gaul roman rebels, egyptian roman rebels and so on, because having all the rebels of the roman factions globbed up doesnt make for a fun time (specially because the other factions do not interact or go to war with the roman rebels)
