Barbados Blast: An original cocktail competition winner! | Cocktail Fridays
In July 2022, we attended the first annual Secret Island Tiki Expo and competed in the amateur bartender battle, and I won! In an Iron Chef Style battle, and leveraging a variety of Barbados-based elements, such as Mount Gay rum, OFTD, Falernum, Cinnamon spice, and Trinidad bitters, I created a spice-forward cocktail I would call the Barbados Blast. Make it yourself at home and YOU be the judge!
Barbados Blast (rebalanced edition)
¾ oz Lime juice
½ oz Grapefruit juice
½ oz Cinnamon syrup
½ oz Falernum
1 ½ oz Barbados Rum (mount gay)
1 oz OFTD Plantation
2 dashes angostura bitters
garnish with bitters float atop crushed ice

Thanks for watching! If you happen to make either cocktail recipe, let me know what you think in the comments! Cheers!
Looks like you had a blast at the competition too! Well done, David. Can’t wait to try it. Nothing better than creating an original and it’s delicious! Hysterical intro as expected! Cheers pal. 🤙🏽

Thanks so much, Vino. It truly was a great time! Since you're a legit bartender, you'll appreciate this: It's been interesting getting more robust feedback on this cocktail.. it IS a bit like a distant cousin of a Jet Pilot, I've found.. which makes a lot of sense, since I'm a big Jet Pilot fan, so I probably subliminally made something similar to it just on pure taste-instinct. Cinnamon syrup, rum, grapefruit (for the 2.0 version), bitters, OFTD.. but, I'd like to think without the pernod, and the committment to barbados-rums, makes this one distinct enough to be it's own cocktail. But! I digress. Thanks for watching as always!!
Congratulations on winning Dave!

That opening was fantastic! You two did a great job on that! I was on my roof and thought Ann might have a video and was hoping you would too. Jumped off and was happy to see your ding five seconds after I started watching hers. Probably going to make this tonight!

Thanks so much, Doc! It was a super fun bartender battle, and very honored they thought my drink turned out well! Indeed, I actually wanted to make it with grapefruit the day-of, but they didn't have any behind the bar for me, so I made-do with the Lime--- and then "reshook" it later. hah. Thank you, I hope you enjoy it if you manage to give it a try!
I was there! Got the recipe from you right after and have made it a couple times. Now I got to try 2.0 version! Love Iron Chef gag!! 👏👏👏

Thanks so much for watching, Gnome! Appreciate the kind words. The "reshake", as it were, gets a little dangerously close to a Jet Pilot I realize, but still a fun unique one! Cheers!!
Looks excellent; I already made my drinks for tonight but next week for sure; plus finally an excuse to buy OFTD.

For sure! Having OFTD on hand is fun for both using AND sipping.. even though it sort of burns my face off when I sip it directly, it's still a fun burn. Thanks for watching!
Congrats on the win and thanks for discussing it in this video. The recipe looks great (and though I get what you were trying to do, calling OFTD a "Barbados rum" is quite a stretch. It's mostly demerara rum).

Thanks, Kevin!! Oh and for sure, OFTD can hardly be called Barbados, that's why I had to be sure to call it a "Blend", which is still a bit of a stretch. It's been fascinating getting feedback from the tiki community, I didn't even think how adding the grapefruit makes it dangerously close to a Jet Pilot recipe.. though I suppose the rum-origins set it apart, and also no pernod/absinthe. But-- I love Jet Pilots, so, I probably subconsciously was steering it in that direction. 😅
Belated congratulations 🥳 🎉 looks like fun. Hey a win is a win with or without the float. I’ll try both versions soon.

Thanks! I'm glad I tossed my hat in the competition, for sure! I believe Chappy did a big multi-day, multi-episode series on Tiki-Kon, I don't believe he was at Secret Island Expo-- would'a been cool to meet though!!
This sounds like a... blast :D

Zingggg! 😂 Thanks for watching, buddy!
Awesome Edit! That was a great drink the way it was so I'm super curious about what the 2.0 version tastes like now. In all fairness, I don't think there was grapefruit present at the bar during the competition? In any case, you made an excellent drink with the ingredients you were presented with. Congrats again on the win! You deserved it!

It's true, I believe the only grapefruit was canned and I didn't want to risk it introducing an odd flavor into the mix, so I went all-in on the Lime 😁 Thanks again for the footage AND for judging, and the kind words, always appreciate it. 🙏 Hope to make it out to the Desert Oasis Room sometime soon! Cheers, Adrian!

In the competition video it looked like you did a dash of Angostura Bitters at 7:26 .. ?
@CocktailFridays
Жыл бұрын
Hello! Ya? I was trying to figure out which timecode you were looking at (since 7:26 is outside the video range). I recall running out of time before being able to toss Ango in (at the competition), but maybe its when I was putting the straws in? Not sure! Thanks for watching!

@@SpaceWolfPainter Oh my gosh you're right!! I must have added 2 dashes while making it, directly in the cocktail!! Good catch, it basically makes the "competition version" of this cocktail in the video incorrect.. whereas the one I actually made is like a slight hybrid of these two recipes in the video. My apologies!
YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! FIRST!!!!!

Thanks, Ann! Yes, Trader Kelly is the greatest, truly a cool dude, and the Hula Girls are of course awesome as well. The competition was such a fun time, and an educational experience. I went up against Billy Robbins, who frankly has much more experience than me and probably should have won, but was still fun to meet him! I'll have to try that Hot Zombie asap. Cheers!
