Un-gimp your UV-5R this way: Turn the radio off. Press the Mon+the PTT+VFO buttons at the same time and hold them down. Turn the radio on while holding down the buttons. The screen will say "FACTORY" meaning that it's un-gimped.

Eu fiz, vi aparecer na tela o 'FACTORY' e afinal o que melhorou?🤔 Não sei o que eu desbloqueei com isso!😟 Achei que isso ia liberar a faixa dos 220MHz...🫣

Didn't realize they locked any of the models. Glad I have a beofeng from about 7 years ago. Use it for MURS sometimes.

I love these cheap little radios. They're almost disposable!

I have one of these. In chirp, I went to the settings tab and then clicked other settings and changed the VHF upper limit to 260 and the UHF lower limit to 300. Now it transmits on the 220 band.

My Baofeng will transmit on all the ranges but I can't find this in the settings with Chirp. It keeps telling me the frequency is invalid. I'd love to find these exact settings. Thanks!

Had a ton of trouble getting this figured out for Chirp on Arch Linux because there were over 32 COM ports labeled tty0-tty32 that were all throwing errors. Here is what I had to do: 1. Run chirp as root so that I did not run into permission issues using the COM ports 2. Use a USB port that plugs directly into the motherboard, not the front panel 3. Reboot the machine with the USB cable plugged in. 4. Use a legacy 2.0 (not 3.0) USB port 5. Now at the very bottom of the list there was a /dev/ttyUSB0 that was not there before. 6. Use Radioddity UV-5RX3 You may not need to do all of this but this is what worked for me.

In Linux, in the Debian side of things, you need to give permissions to have access to the com ports... A quick line in the terminal and a log out and in again select the USB com in the list in the software and even the fake prolific chipset USB radio cables work on chirp in Linux. It took a bit of Google work to get that figured out. The instructions are in the chirp forums.

There are two versions of the UV-S9 and this can be confusing. There's the Tri-Power and the Tri-Band. This nearly tripped me up when I ordered one. I bought the tri-band version to use almost exclusively as a scanner so I had access to the most traffic. Both about the same price.

My UV-S9S3 tri bander came without the Abree antenna. I used one of the Radioddity settings in chirp.

Subjectively, the audio output seems much better over the uv5r. They even seem to beat the quansheng version

One thing I don't like about the USB adapter is that it doesn't use the same jack as the dock, so you cant interchange them even though it would be trivial to do so.

I was totally surprised that it didn't have a software lock. Also the new locked UV-5Rs are really easy to jailbreak. There is no option to set low power mode though, low is actually medium power. Someone already beat me to it but I'll say it again Just hold PTT and MONI and VFO/MR while turning the radio on A screen will pop up that says FACTORY and then reboot. It will not reset the radio but it will unlock PTT on all available bands

It's BS... All of these radios are based on the same 8w Baofeng design, and they really only put out 6 or 7w.

  • @ScorpionRanchTX

A Nagoya 771 is a nice upgrade antenna, or the 717 if you don't want the length of the 771. amzn.to/3ORYVHd VHF/UHF are essentially line of sight so mountains are going to cause problems no matter what antenna you have. Maybe there is a repeater on top of one peaks you can access? If not, CB (HF) might work better for you.

there are no repeaters here, but going up a little on the hills the signal gets better, I think an antenna a little stronger would be enough, in this case I operate at 460mhz, in the video none of this was good for uhf, vhf doesn't work where I live .

It's a Nagoya NA-771 clone which is a 2m/70cm antenna. The seller shipped me a new one and it works great. Good customer service. The radio in the video isn't tri-band.
