From my understanding, the UV-17 and the UV-17 Pro are 2 different radios. What's in the video is the UV-17, not the pro model. The Pro model (I just ordered it yesterday) has the upgraded screen, upgraded voice (the one that speaks to you), frequency copy function, and according to the description of the ad I bought from, also has the GPS included. I found one in an all black case too, for about $40 shipped. Also - there are at least two versions of the uv 9 (one is waterproof) that would probably be more in line with an upgraded UV-5R, and they are also cheaper then the UV-17 and Pro model. The screen on the Pro model is an actual color screen, unlike the model in this video which is just a blue screen. That's what I can tell ppl after a few hours worth of research, as I'm new to this. So far, the easiest color onto find on the PRO is the orange. With some searching I did find an all black one - but wasnt able to find one in green. Make sure your item description says UV-17 PRO, shows a black screen in the pictures, and lists wireless frequency copy in the description IF you want the pro. IMO - the upgraded screen and 2 second wireless frequency copy feature (make this radio find and save whatever another radio is broadcasting on, like one that doesnt show you the real frequency) is worth the small bump in price.

Revisiting now that i have it - Yes - the 17 PRO does come with everything i mentioned, and does come with the GPS feature. I honestly have no real idea how to use it other then basic scanning and playing around. I have the two of Uv-5r (8 watt models) i keep in my truck at work just to use and normal 2 ways in a pinch (i work for a utility company) - and all of them have way to many features for a newbie like me to understand without some real education (more effort then I’m willing to put in). I mean - for the money - you REALLY cant say anything bad about any of them.. I DID buy 2 upgraded batteries for the UV-5R’s - that are short, but about twice as thick that have usb c ports built into the battery itself so i can recharge them in the truck and at home without the base. My only complaint on the aftermarket batteries is there isnt a boot to cover the charge ports - and the belt clip now must be mounted on the battery itself. Not a big deal. I picked up 2 shortie antennas for them to keep them as small as possible, and paid a guy on ebay to 3d print a couple sun visor mounts for em. The 17 Pro i keep at home just to play with. I was HOPING to use the frequency copy function on the 17pro to make it able to communicate with the commercial Motorolas we have at work - but i cant figure out how to get it to both and transmit and receive with the Motorolas. I can hear them on some channels they use, but cant transmit back…. There must be a code or tone that needs to be programmed? Using the frequency copy feature - it identifies the frequency of some channels on the Motorolas that i can actually use, but it gives another 4 or 5 digit code under it - and i have no clue what that means. I’m sure an experienced guy might be able to make them work together, but theres no real video on something like that and its way to complex for me when i just dont understand what I’m seeing. That said - the build quality on the 17pro is pretty amazing for the price. If youre in the market, don’t hesitate. Beware of the ads though - cause some advertise the UV-17, then a 17 max, and a 17 Pro. Make sure what you buy has the GPS, frequency copy function, color screen, and different voice if you want the Pro model. You should be able to find them in Orange, Black, and i did find a Green model after i bought mine.. unfortunately i cant keep my mind focused to really learn on how to use them to the best of their ability, but i figure having them is better then not having anything if something bad happens. The ability to pick up FM radio and the Noah weather channels (pre programmed in my 17pro somehow - i assume utilizing its gps feature - which is perfectly accurate by the way) is great to have.

Funny that there's 17 versions of the 17. I got the orange 17 pro, FCC label but no license # lol. All GMRS progged, cool. TX is measuring 8.7w, I'd call that badass for a HT. I have more HT's than I can count. This Chinese radio is legitimate. I'd throw away all my cheap radios replace them with this, if I could buy this exact transceiver again. Huge issue: 17 versions of the UV-17 Pro Tip: ditch the Nagoya antennas and check out a "signal stick"

After 2 weeks of playing with this radio ive found a few things that may be of concern to new buyers. 1- the battery life sucks. Its dead in just a few hours of being on. Even less with talking. 2- ROGER beep is misspelled as POGER. 3- The GPS is very accurate and a nice feature.

Just got my UV-17 pro today. But I have used it before. My nephew bought one and had me program it to tee frequencies our group uses. Great radio. But the voice prompt sounded muffled. I don't always use it so I deactivated it. The frequency copy means you can search for the frequency of another radio as long as it is transmitting. (see section 5.15 on page 17) This is good if you want to know the frequency used by a group. Got the frequency used by the security guard at the market beside my house. This function has many potential uses. 😉 Great review. Thanks and 73s.

I ordered the UV17 but the booklet I got with it says it's the BF-17. It looks the same as the one you're showing, except for the color (mine's green). Also, the screen is configured a bit differently. One thing I noticed at the end of your video is the screen light on yours stays on when you were testing it outside. Is there a way to get mine to stay on all the time or to get it to stay on for a chosen amount of time? I haven't seen anything in my booklet about that, at least not yet. Thanks for an informative video.

Not really should be compared to the Uv-5R, The uv-16 isn't actually a baofeng but I Chinese rip off of one using the baofeng name. The baofeng bf-f8hp was actually the official upgrade for the uv-5r. Uv 10, uv 13, uv 16, and uv 21 are not designed or made by baofeng.

I have an answer for this now. The PRO model has the upgraded color screen that appears black. The normal 17 is just blue. It also comes with a wireless frequency copy feature to ID and match another radios frequency, and the one I just ordered SAYS its comes with the GPS feature in the description. Its ip54 rated, and the voice that speaks to you is different. The black color vs the blue screen is the easiest way to tell. Its available in black and or orange so far. It appears the model was updated this month, in June of 2023, so the pro should be the newer model.
