I have some older model Baofeng and Quansheng radios, and I am always pleased with their excellent sensitivity, with the Quansheng being slightly more sensitive than the Baofeng. I was just wondering if these newer model Baofengs have the same, worse, or better sensitivity than the older ones.

UV-17 Pro GPS: If it’s locked to just amateur bands, hold down PTT+SK2(button under PTT)+GREEN on powerup and it’ll unlock (General mode) after displaying “_” for a few seconds. To lock to just amateur (Part 97 mode) bands, hold PTT+5 on powerup. To see what mode it’s in simply just hold the 8 key on powerup. From working mode, long press 0 for voltage level.

@@fittoat9261NP. I have three of them and first thing I did was try out various power-on combinations and that’s how I discovered how to set the locked (Part 97) and unlocked (General) modes. GPS beaconing can, with a little fiddling of the timings, even work over a repeater, but haven’t got it to be consistent. Had they allowed you to set the GPS burst to fe EOT instead of BOT, it likely would work consistently through a repeater.

I was hoping that when you said they were very different inside that you would show us what was different inside. I purchased one of the radios on the left, and found that the only place to get the programming software pops up with a virus warning in Avast! So I have not downloaded it. Also I've found no UV-17 listed as an actual Baofeng, and Chirp doesn't list it either. BTW, I found the right-hand radio in your review, (with the full color screen,) nowhere on the Internet. Would you post the website where you got it? I'm interested.

John, BOTH radios were obtained from Aliexpress. The 17 was listed as the ‘Pro’ so I ordered it and found out it was not! I then found the 17Pro on Aliexpress again, and ordered it. Since the UV17 keeps popping up as the 17Pro - which it is NOT - I went ahead and did the comparison. Look around Aliexpress, you will find both, including wrong listing. The Pro has Airband, and GPS and has a nicer COLOR screen, rather than a blue COLORED screen. The only site for the 17Pro software is clean, I checked it with several Anti virus SW, some just flag anything they don’t like! Also the UV17 is listed on the German Baofeng site (.de) as the Pro in the title but as the UV 17 in all the rest of the information. CHIRP does not support either of them right now. BTW, I should have said : operationally different inside! I am not about to open them up. 🙂

There are videos warning on some programming cables that are being sold over major platforms that do not actually work and the videos point to some seller whose cable allegedly works reliably. Likewise, if some receives this radio without the sticker that should be under the battery, what does that suggest. Maybe not a bogus product, but it has been torn off for other reasons. Lastly, even if one receives a genuine UV-17, for example, and it was advertised and sold as UV-17Pro, it is a false advertisement, even if unintentional because each model has its scope of features for the particular price. Great vid! I presently own the UV17 with the plain blue screen and small fonts (yes, I've seen it described as the UV17 pro "version 1" though the sticker under the battery just says UV17) and I also own the UV17 Pro GPS (great fully featured radio which has the full colour screen and large fonts.....oh, and the "Barry White" voice instead of the usual lady) I have ordered what could be described as the radio that falls between these two in specs which I'll call the UV17 Pro "version 2". Now this one has a larger font than the "version 1" (but not as large as the Pro GPS) and the screen is black with white lettering. Just to confuse everyone even more you mentioned that the Pro GPS didn't seem to be able to "sync" (copy frequencies from one radio to another) and......don't quote me on this......wait for it.....I THINK this is an exclusive feature of YET ANOTHER version of the UV17 called the UV17 Pro L.......yep.....I've seen this "L" version advertised on Aliexpress and the specs list "frequency copying"??????? Don't ya just love it! Anyway, I think I need to go lie down in a darkened room for a while after all this talk of all these versions of the UV17 and if anyone has any advice on how to stop buying the dammed things that would be much appreciated as well because this baofeng buying addiction of mine is getting out of hand! lol

Then there's the software issue as well with the "original" uv17 requiring different CPS software to the later/revised models. It's all a crazy mixed up muddle which is a shame really as this "new generation" of "uv5r replacements" (if that is what they are?) are really quite nice radios and a significant improvement on the original world conquering uv5r. 😲

@@bigwill4423 different vendors are ordering variants of this model with a few changes to lower the cost and sell cheaper - to be competitive - causing a lot of frustration to buyers not getting what they really want. Baofeng is just happy to be manufacturing and selling units. The only one I got from BaofengRadio was the UV-17R and I am not sure even that is official! The Pro GPS IS listed on the Baofeng German site, so maybe it has to do with the international market?? Also with the FCC crackdown on Baofeng (as well as international requirements) the newer radios are locked in firmware to certain frequencies and cannot be unlocked (yet). Even more confusing!! If anything, I am inclined to believe that the UV-17R IS the ‘new’ UV-5R. Just my own opinion though.

@@fittoat9261 You could well be right. I'm totally confused by all the different variants and specs. As I'm in the UK the radios we get are "unlocked" and are capable of transmitting all the way through the UHF and VHF range unlike the American ones which have to comply with FCC regulations. No doubt some clever clogs will eventually figure a way of unlocking the various locked models given time. It's crazy that you have to go to the Baofeng Germany site to get any official confirmation from Baofeng that these radios even exist let alone get official support for them. Every ad I see online had the other one (because they are all stock photos/ad templates), and going through a sea of blue screen models to get the Pro/V2 whatever they want to call it isn't my first choice. Makes me wonder if the blue screen model is an OEM ("brown box") version or even a fake. I say that because that radio uses the UV5R firmware as opposed to the UV13 firmware and I dunno why they would use an older system on a new radio unless it's a customer radio, or someone is counterfeiting them with UV5R main boards and UV17 parts.

Especially in China, who know how many outfits build these things under the Baofeng name. It does make you wonder what kind of freedom they have. When you poke through Baofeng's FCC certifications you a lost always find a cover letter stating about 4 or 5 sub models of "electrically identical" radios.

I live close to an airport, so I get pretty decent reception of tower/taxi traffic. It takes a good antenna as I am about 5 miles away. I like the radio in general, and am able to use zones for different sets of frequencies I want to program and use. I can scan any group as needed. For less than $50, I think it is a pretty good radio. I still use the Ruyage as my EDC! (See my review on IT) 73

Hi Patrick, hard to tell these days with so MANY variants! If it has letters on the keypad, rather than some function identifiers, then it is a PRO GPS, otherwise it is a 17 variant. Every time I post a detailed post about how to use the GPS and also link the English CPS, YT automatically deletes it. I hate YT. Short version, long press BLUE then short press GREEN to cycle GPS screens. Radio numbers are set by ANI-EDIT on radio and coorolate to DTMF settings in CPS. PTT sends coordinates and requests other 17 Pro GPS’s to automatically send theirs back.
