Great review, as always! Just picked up UV-S9Plus from Amazon for the USB charging ability. On 70cm, power out was 1.4, 6, 10 watts and on 2M, it was 2.3, 6.7 and 9.5. Quality control on these is pretty inconsistent (another UV-S9Plus did 9 watts on High and Medium and 4 on low). I used a 771 antenna instead of a dummy load. Agree, not much difference between 5 and 8 watts..more worried about that stock Baofeng antenna!! LOL Battery won't swap out with UV-5R and kinda hard to find online.

I just bought this radio off Amazon. Label on back states it is 5 watts. The programming and design are almost identical to the UV-5R, but the battery is 2200 mAH and so far, outlasts both of my UV-5R's. The UVS9Plus is a tad taller, but seems slimmer. With the stubby antenna, it's perfect for your pocket, and mine is YELLOW !!

I have the GT-5R which works all right, and picked up the UV-5RX3 this week after seeing your review on it a couple of months ago. (More people should use the 1.25m band if only so the FCC doesn't try to sell it off again.) I picked up replacement antennas for both of them. So far they work great. Now, if they'd add D-Star and APRS to the tri-band model, we'd really be talking...

I bought one for $30 to leave in the car since it is USB charging and I have to say I am very impressed for $30. Receives more than some of my more expensive radios and transmitted at over 7 watts on the meter. Best part is I did not have to do the funny thing to unlock it because the people at Baofeng where nice enough to leave it unlocked. I guess they knew I would NEVER use is any way other than what the FCC intended. Can’t beat it for a $30 throw away.

I recently purchased a Baofeng UV-S9PLUS and it has almost all the features you talked about the UV-9SPLUS. It also has the USB-A charger for the battery as well, which is a great feature. It is not advertised as 8W, though. It is a 5W radio like yours. 128 memory channels and three bands 144/220/440MHz. I purchased a Radioddity RD-301 three band antenna to replace the stock one that was only 140/440 (on a three-band radio?) yeah.

Anyway, i get home and i cant even get the weather.. idk if its cuz the phone or power lines towers with the 5g are right behind my house or i didn't get the 8 watts.. FM radio works tho.. I bought one of these radios for Jeep-to-Jeep communication on a recent trip. They did not preform well. Regardless, the reason for my comment is to mention changing power settings. On mine (same model), to cycle through the three power settings, all I do is hit the #/key button. No need to go into the menu.

Can somebody explain what is going on with the resurgence of the old/original UV-5 body style? It's easy to identify compared to the current Baofeng lineup because it's slightly taller, has the band button, and most importantly, and frustratingly, uses a 2 tab battery that isn't compatible with the "BL-5" 3 tab style.

I'm curious what the "wide" TXP setting would read for power. Does that wide setting come back if you reset the radio? I wonder if that "wide" setting was less of a glitch and more of a "testing" setting that can only be set in software or at the factory... maybe it's 8W and that's how they justify it. Still false advertising if that's the case since it can't be manually selected for, but I'd still be interested to see what power that odd setting transmits at.

Technicality, but it’s S9 not 9S, sorry 😇 Like you say, I have 2 of these, both which put out different figures. But also, on a dummy load yes not much more than 4 watts, on a decent antenna, either HT type or ladder line j-pole, it can go up to 7.1 Out of the whole heap of Fengs I have, the better ones are this and the UV-B3 plus, both have the charging point in the side, both use same batteries Thanks for your continued work out there Brian, U.K.

  • @bettersaferadio

Because it was mentioned, technically, per the FCC, all Amateur Radios that have a scanning function must have Part 15B certification to be legally imported into the US. So, even though our amateur tickets allow us to use whatever, this radio technically isn't legal to import (legal to buy though). While some don't care either way, when you get a radio that's gone through the rigors of Part 15B testing and certification, you can reasonably expect (but not always) a higher quality radio, because they cared enough to follow the law and didn't otherwise shy away from such scrutiny. Even if you are a free-banding prepper, even though the rules may not concern you, sometimes you want a more solid build and something that will likely last longer as such, from a more reputable manufacturer. Then again, sometimes disposable gets the job done also. :)
