As much as I want to say that's hyperbolic, this time it's more true than false. Purchase history is something called a "lagging indicator". Ads based on purchase history is usually shit you already bought or shit you are already buying. Should you buy more.of what you already bought or buying? Probably not. After I buy something like a vacuum cleaner, Amazon ads blasts me with some FOMO ads of other vacuum cleaners with "SALE!!!" prices that are not really on sale encouraging me to buy a second one I do not need. Of course I'm not buying because im the type that researches before I buy. There are more impulsive buyers who are more affected by ads probably buying a lot of shit they already have which they absolutely shouldn't buy. Then there are KZread ads which are scams. Imagine if you bought into a crypto scam and now they are serving you all the crypto scams. You are stupid enough to get scammed once, now here's 99 opportunities to get scammed twice.

@@LRK-GT I could totally see that being one of the angles they would take. I'm not sure that I'd agree on the strength of that argument though. In that situation the bank is allowed to use your assets in a limited way but can't deprive you of the assets. Where with your personal data them selling it removes it from the market. Essentially transferring ownership. A lot of orgs get away with it because they have shady terms of service but in this case their fiduciary responsibilities would supercede any tos. All that being said that might be an optimistic take and there's a good chance you're right and the bank steamrolls the whole process. Historically the courts have not had the most solid track record with banks in general. Another optimistic take is that we'll see a meaningful court case reining in TOS and eula's in general. Which ultimately may require some reform of forced arbitration to even be possible.

Louis, I have to take you to task on the use of the word "start" in the video title - I worked for a banks statement printing dept back in the '80's. The banks then were using purchase data to create a widespread barcode down the side of the statements, that told the packaging machines which advertising pamphlettes to add in to the envelope. Even back then they were selling that data to advertisers, leading to people getting advertising in their mailbox. Also, your cats are awesome :)

I also do that. I have a "perm ban" list (permanent ban list). Companies that have egregious levels of customer service that need an overhaul we all know will never apply. Companies I swear I'll go out of my way to avoid business with unless the result is exceptional pain or discomfort for me. These include certain hotel chains, airlines, gas stations, utilities & "service providers". Nor will I interview and work for any company on the perm ban list (senior level I.T. like Rossman).

I just started playing their stupid game. Need a direct deposit to waive the fee? Okay, I'll transfer a penny to a PayPal account, pay myself at another one and withdraw. Set a floor on that deposit's size? Okay, on TaskRabbit I could turn off per-gig payments and move lumps. TR took back that option, okay, now if I have $250 for a few days I can do the PayPal play with but Cash App, once again meeting the requirement. Some bank to bank transfers made with BillPay meet it too. It's customer unfriendly, sure, but they do some things better than any other bank I've tried. I play the stupid game.

It's not bad enough that they can barely keep your finances or personal information secure, as it is. Louis's point about ad data relapsing health and addiction problems is completely valid. I'm 879 days sober and I still get ads for alcohol all the time, somehow they keep getting finagled in no matter how many times I toggle them off. I know for a fact it's because of how much of an "enthusiast" I was about all things booze - whiskey, scotch, beer, etc - so my ad profile is probably lit with a neon green sign that says "this guy will buy booze." It's absolutely fucking criminal that the profits of a company are more important than the health and longevity of an innocent civilian.
