The Battle of Fort Donelson was fought from February 11-16, 1862, in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. The Union capture of the Confederate fort near the Tennessee-Kentucky border opened the Cumberland River, an important avenue for the invasion of the South. It also handed Union General U.S. Grant an early, high-profile victory.

    2 of my ancesters were there 27th Alabama H company.. they escaped a lot of the garrison didnt want to surrender but were told they had too. Fort Donelson.... comanding officers with no back bone. a lot of the defenders ignored the order to surrender and left

    That’s another of your southern lies. Confederate commanders Floyd, Pillow and Nathan Bedford Forest were out fought by General Grant and ran like chickens in the night, turning over command twice to leave surrender to Buckner. You need to learn the history of what actually happened.

    Same had one ancestor that fought with the 36th Virginia. He was one of the ones escaped on a river boat with Floyd.
