Baldur's Gate 3 as a D&D Beginner (Ongoing Review)

Ойындар

Baldur's Gate 3 is my first Dungeons and Dragons experience... ever.
I owned Larian's last big title, Divinity Original Sin 2 but never played it because I got it in a sale bundle, and so while this was on my radar slightly thanks to the bear scene that took the internet by storm, I wasn't really ready for what was to come.
All of the classes, the combat encounters the choices to be made the secrets to find, all with a wonderful OST, great voice acting and a phenomenal sense of identity, Baldur's Gate 3 is a runaway hit for me, and quite possibly the best RPG I've ever played (and I've played a few).
My first character was a Bard named John Bard with the explicit goal of making love to all of his problems.
If you are also a D&D noob like me, don't worry about this game being unapproachable, its very welcoming to longtime players and newbies alike, and there's a lot to love here.

    I have played dnd 5e (the dnd edition BG3 is based around) since it launched. I can confidently say Larian has distilled dnd into a video game. Some small stuff in combat doesn't 100% translate, but it's damn close to it. If you want to know what playing dnd feels like, this game is as close as it gets.

    As an active D&D player of 4 years I have to say this is as close to making D&D a video game as you can get. The freedom to explore and do literally anything you want encompasses how an actual game of D&D would play out. You may not be able to do everything you want, but you can damn well try, and that's the fun of it.

    I just made it to the city of Baldurs Gate and i have to say, its the best RPG of ALL time. One tip if you really want to get into deep roleplaying, you should play as a magical version of yourself. That is the way to anchor yourself in the story and it will be much more personal.

    My favorite dnd moment was missing every attack roll on a boss until I got to my barbarian and then killed said boss by hitting him with a thrown stick of salami. And my only issues with the game so far are the character creator, it's really lacking, no bust or ass sliders on female characters? You can fuck a bear but I can't have big titties on my female characters? And how a lot of feats dont interact with wildshape for druids. Other than that the game is so good its hard to put down and when I do put it down it's all I think about. Theory crafting multiclass characters I'm going to run after my first play through.

    Na, dont worry. Its not to different from Xcom or Phoenix Point if you played those. You got turn based combat, and % hit chances, to do a variable Amount of Damage. Its just that you got way more enviroment interaction than usual, so teleporting to a major Boss, skipping entire Dungeons and Puzzles, is not a Bug, its a feature. (The Game even plays a unique Voiceline from the surprised Boss in that case.)

    I absolutely hate turn based combat. It's probably the biggest turn off game mechanic that will prevent me from playing a game. But, I grew up reading d&d books. Never played the table top. And while the combat is still a bit of a struggle for me, this is by far the best RPG I've ever played. My only gripe is that I can't say anything nice to anyone without them wanting to bone me afterwards. It's just a bit much. A not interested in same sex relationships option would be nice.

  • @NotAbsolutelySure

    @NotAbsolutelySure

    i think it comes at the cost of all the party members being open to bone, rather than not interested in same sex, just having a very clear “romance vs friendship route” option towards the start of their questlines with an “you sure” button after would do wonders friendship with any of the companions you arent romancing is an equally rewarding narrative experience so i definitely understand being frustrated with any positive dialogues being taken as “send em down the romance route” that being said, game still kicks ass

    @@NotAbsolutelySure yeah exactly, I noticed it with Gale, I let him down easy after saying something nice. But then the devil girl thought I wanted Gale because I let her down also. I was like omg no! The whole time I'm trying to romance shadow lol frustrated I go talk to my favorite vampire and BAM gotta calm him down too. Felt like a weird highschool love triangle that all happens too fast. However, once everyone knows where I stand, It seems to be calm now (reaching end of act 1 I think)

    No Witcher 3 got that cause it was better than everything else. Regarding Baldur, is just people getting swept in the moment. You cannot review a game in EA nor can you in less than 2 weeks, people are playing 5 hours and screaming this is the best game ever made, which is not. @@ulfgarion Baldur Gate 3 is good, don't get me wrong, but I seem better. Baldur is probs a 8 or a 9/10. The graphics and story are great along the gameplay, but the lack of freedom is a bit concerning. Divinity 2 is a much better game when it comes to multiclassing itself. Another thing about Baldur Gate 3 is the characters being inconsistent. A character such as the barbarian can disapprove of all you actions in act 2 at Moontower, yet be like "oh these guys here at Moontower? They are all my friends" despite she hating all of Moontower residents. Is a mess honestly. People will have one interaction with a talking squirrel and call it game of the year. Hey is nice they enjoy it, but I guess some folks are impressed so easily. Praising a game for no DLC is also redundant, since ppl will then go to Dark Souls and cry tears of joy that the DLC exist. Most folks cannot successfully separate their bias from objectivity.

    2:18 That's not a troll. It's an ogre. Trolls are a lot larger (D&D trolls are about 4-5 meters tall) and look not nearly has human-like. You wouldn't stand a chance against a troll at this point. Favourite D&D moment - that's impossible for me. I'm playing D&D and other RPGs for 35 years now, there's sooo much.
