When people say Avatar is not a kids show, this is what they refer to. This insane level of emotional maturity this show displays in its characters and story. It's easy to underestimate Avatar because it's animation and many do, but the writing on display here is so consistent, so intelligent and mature, that it baffles me everytime. One of the very few shows I'm somewhat comfortable calling 'perfect'

Nah, Momo just left him. I don't believe every camera angle would be from Momo's eyes. He can't be looking that closely at the spike that reawakened the Avatar State. He sure wasn't inside the rock shield when we got a good look at Aang in there. Some shots of Ozai would make him swat Momo away. And what about the changing cameras? Would Momo be teleporting? And we have seen what Momo's perspective was like earlier in the series. It's like a green dome mirror where everyone talks gibberish. We never got that filter anywhere in the fight.

Zuko had improved his fire bending skill to what I felt matched Azula’s by the end of the show, and his composure and new outlook would help prevent Azula from getting into his head. Ozai saying "You're weak. Just like the rest of your people. They did not deserve to live in this world. In my world!" adds more meaning to Aang not wanting to kill Ozai. The philosophy of the Air Nomads and their teachings is their strength. Valuing life and choosing non-violence is not a weakness. Aang is the last of his people and he needed to prove that what his people stood for, what they died for mattered.

The thing that always gets me about Azula’s breakdown is that it reminds me that she really is just a 15 year old girl. All she ever wanted was her father’s praise and her mother’s love, and she felt like it was always just out of reach. So when she starts crying, all the fight she ever had in her is gone in that moment. She’s broken and can’t to anything but cry in despair.

There's something small and significant about Katara and Aang's kiss at the end. Typically we see that Aang is the one that has more of the crush on Katara. He initiates most of the romance and previous kisses. In "The Ember Island Players," we see Aang kiss Katara again and she pulls away, saying she is confused and that the timing isn't right. At the end, we see Katara take control of the romance. She is the one who approaches Aang and LEANS IN FOR THE KISS FIRST, acknowledging that she isn't confused anymore and the timing is right.

That is so significant, just like Zuko breaking Azula's root like Iroh was first teaching him way back at the beginning. I remember the first time I saw this and I was so pissed at Aang for not killing Ozai. I thought he was being selfish, “this isn’t about you, this is about the world”, but now someone like Ozai having his bending taken away is a fate worse than death. Katara, despite her steadfast moral commitment to seeing the best in others doesn’t typically extend that commitment to those who have personally betrayed her trust, she should be furious for what Azula did, but she shares Zuko’s empathy for Azula. As cruel as she was, and as horrible as the things she said and did see, she deserved better than this. But, there’s still room for her to grow since she’s only a teenager. No one wants Ozai to be redeemed and there’s no way he could be a good person. He had his crossroads of destiny of destruction and power. Zuko’s life changed for the better at his lost Agni Kai, maybe it would happen to Azula. I just love the fact that even though Zuko is the Fire Lord, he is humble to serve tea to his family and his friends.
