Thank you. I have a 2004 Mitsubshi Montero Sport which has a whirring sound when under load like 4wding and going up a very steep climb or when loaded and driving up a very steep road. I did a trip a couple of years ago where I was going up a very long steep hill and the car wouldn't go any faster than 50 kph (about 30 mph) it was whirring quite loud until we got to the top and the road flattened out then it was fine. This hill was 6km long and went from 350m in alt to 1100m. When I checked the fluid when I got home it was a slight brown not read so I did overheat the trans. I now have a trans cooler with a fan. Car runs fine and shifts fine. Would this have just been an overheating issue or could I have an issue? TIA Jim

So my transmission sometimes does slightly kick when it shifts mostly in the lower gears and it feels like the engine is a loss for power and really a loss of power when going up a steep hill. I just bought the truck and it has a brand new tranny in it not a rebuild one but bran new so thats why I’m wondering if they changed to torque converter when they did it. i can go outside and crank my 1994 dodge ram 3.9 v6. i can drive around my yard for a while and its good. when it gets all warmed up it starts whinning on me. then it will go into neutral i guess u can say. i let it sit for a while and it will go into gear and reverse. it just happens when its hot. idk what it is but id like to get some information bout it. it doesnt have a code reader so im stuck i gues u can say

Converter can also be bad when the vehicle doesn’t move or if it’s new an you have someone install that doesn’t know or is uneducated on filling it with a quart and a half before your start it the converter can air lock and won’t suck the fluid in an the car won’t move or go into any gear

0:43 So my car (crown Victoria) has nearly every torque converter symptom however when I put my car in Drive, it act like the car is “coasting” it moves forward but giving it gas will make it slip, then after giving it 30 seconds of revs, it will kick into gear and burn rubber; other times the transmission will shudder a ton but the car does not like to reengage in drive after coasting, it will just slip till it’s at a certain speed or you rev it enough to kick it back into drive… I have 1st and 2nd on my car as an alternative to Drive and the car does not slip in those gears with the exception of turning on the car and engaging it for the first time….. I’m more sure I have a torque converter problem after this video where before I was thinking solenoid or something else.

My fwd vehicle started making a rattling noise one day. It seems to drive fine except for the noise. The only DTC code was for the Transmission Range Sensor. Haven't replaced that yet because I'm currently replacing my motor mounts when they arrive. What's the best way to isolate the noise? Engine or transmission, I can't seem to find the spot.

I had the TRSensor change because, at times, I could not crank it until I pulled it the gear shift all the way down and back in park. At the same time, I changed the trottle body. The next day, I drove it, and the VSA came on and it would not allow me to go over 40-45mph. I finally did codes and received a trottle body. I had it clean again and replaced the same trottle body, but it did the same thing. Itganged gears with jerking and loss of speed. I took it to the dealership Saturday and paid more than I should for a dealership DTC and it came up trottle body. I changed the new trottle body and got a scan again, and it said converters, which were a changed not a week ago. The read-out also gave TC . The said thing about this is that most of the research is on you. I've searched, and many of the new symptoms are leaning strong in the area of the TCClutch family. I just had my yrans rebuilt i frel a shutter at 45 and when it shifts into 2nd i have no power ..o can put it the floor and it barely goes? Coukd this be the transmission

It might be a little late to get a response however I have a 2009 Sedona and when I put it in drive I hear a constant rumbling noise I even put it on jack stands and put it in drive and hurt the noise directly in the transmission. There is a carrier bearing that was replaced both wheel bearings are also replaced so it's a noise in the transmission when you put it in drive it engages and the wheels turn but the rumbling noise starts. The interesting thing is when you put it in neutral while it's in gear the rumbling noise continues even when breaking everything rumbling noise. Any thoughts on that might be helpful however I pretty sure it's not the torque converter it's some bearings inside the transmission.

@@skatasay123 On a side note I think I trashed a good transmission because of a bad torque converter prior. Change your SPIII every oil change 4-5 quarts as needed.

Hello, I have codes P0733, P0735, P0868, P0944, P1790 and P083B. Some time ago i noticed when slowing down that it’s not shifting properly between 5th and 4th gear and especially between gear 3 and 2. It feels like it stays in higher gear and when shifting 3rd and 2nd gear there is a sound something similar when you drive manual transmition and car is in 3rd gear but you don’t give it gas pedal, like it’s chocking. Few days ago, car stopped reacting to gas pedal in driving. I turned the car off and on again I was able to drive in first two gears but as soon as it reaches 3rd RPMs are going, but it seems like there is no gas/acceleration. I changed the filter and the oil it works now, I am able to drive it but still have problem with downshifting from 3rd to 2nd gear, there is that sound again that reminds on not hitting the clutch while driving manual transmition. Please help.

That is a lot of codes which could point to many different causes. I would be sure the fluid level is correct. Since the filter was replaced, the other causes could be a bad transmission sensor, a failed mechanical part, or possibly a bad TCM. It will need to be troubleshooted to find the cause.

I have a 2019 explorer with a broken torque converter. The part is under warranty but on back order. Is driving the vehicle with a broken torque converter damaging the transmission?

Yes it can damage it and cause it to overheat

I think my 2015 Grand Caravan has torque converter issues. A local transmission shop said they wouldn't just change the converter, they would only do both since it's probably a better outcome. Is that true? Or are they just trying to sell me more work?

Yes do both, if the torque converter is bad it's gonna send metal shavings in your trans

What about when driving faster (approaching highway speeds and above)and the RPMs are higher than when everything is working perfectly? (46RE in a 99 Durango 5.9 4X4) Kicks a code that won't let it pass NY State Inspection because the gas mileage is reduced. Replaced the 3-4 solenoid which seems to also have the TCC Solenoid on the same mount two times already. Fluid is full and clean clearish red and sweet smelling. Transmission Guy just wants to rebuild everything for $2800 plus tax. Fine if everything is shot, but way too much is right compared to what I'm reading everywhere indicating a BAD Transmission OR Torque Converter. NO usual symptoms!

From what you explained, that is a sign of a bad torque converter. A sign that it is the torque converter is not having the lockup thay causing higher than usual rpm at freeway speeds. Also, if you were unable to pass inspection in your Durango, that sounds like it has the P0740 transmission code. I'm having the same problem with my 1998 Durango with the 5.9 V8 46re transmission. I plan to replace the torque converter.

@@Speeder105 The transmission place I use and trust said removal and reinstallation is quite a decent bit of the job and doing the whole transmission and Torque Converter is the best way to be problem free for sure and got 3 years and 36K warranty. It's a big undertaking pulling thhis 46RE with the Transfer Case and all with so many things in the waya d getting it back in with everything working as it should. No lift and a driveway in Winter sealed the deal.

Could this be extremely sporadic I have had it happen twice in the last 3k miles on my 2018 Honda Ridgeline but as soon as I turn it off turn it back on it is fine for a long time

Yes same issue with my Mercedes accept now the rpm’s jump higher than actual speed when accelerating i have it parked it said on a scanner the torque converter has too much friction so I’d take it for service whiles you can still move it😂🤷🏼‍♂️

I'm having the similar issue with my Honda CRV RD1, currently can't decide whether TC or Transmission. Funny things about my car was all the gears are function when driving but at certain point the engine is hot then engine run but not move. So i have switch off the engine then restart again then the car will move but same issue will happen again. So did I had problem with TC OR Transmission?

Hi I have a Ford Escape 2007 that started showing overdrive flashing , did not change any gear after that ( or when is gold going around 500 meters and does not engage the gear anymore ) I replaced the band and after installation, it did not shift at all ( it does go to 1 but does not move I have to go to high RPM and goes in but not moving )so need help what I should do now thanks

My transmission was slipping no won't go forward or reverse after oil change

So recently my transfer case has been popping coded for the 4wd selector, but it still works. And my transmission fluid was low. So im suspecting a leak and letting transmission fluid into the transfer case. But also recently say i used to be at 1100 rpm at 30 mph, now its holding 1500 at 30 on the same road/conditions. And when i let off the gas the rpms dont drop like they used too and it doesn't seem to want to shift to provide engine braking, and when it does shift i can hear it, but there is virtually no resistance provided. I have a transmission ready to swap in, but its used so unsure about it, but how would i determine if its worth it or not to just swap it? Also fluid looks a little on the darker side.

Would a bad torque converter make it slid into tear like gong down a hill it will it will slid thru the gear but if you hold it a foot in the gas it will slip and way hey rpms

Did you find out? Mines doing that too it goes ok until I hit the gas hard, when it downshifts it revs to nowhere hear hunting or not catching

Put the vehicle in reverse add gas moves till it hits a certain rpm ranges goes to a "neutral". Have to stop engine, restart to go back into reverse.. repeat... thoughts?

My 7.3L Powerstroke had the same problem. It was a Bad Torque converter with Flex plate & 6 Bad Injectors with cracked Injector Cups

I got one that nobody can figure out in my 2005 bmw 545i when I put it in drive and give it enough gas to leave my driveway quickly it doesn't move for a second revs high whines then slams and goes into limp mode

If only the torque converter has failed, then yes, it can be replaced without replacing the transmission, but often when a torque converter fails, the transmission also has an issue.

I have a bmw e60 535d, I don’t know if it transmission or converter, I have no code, but the symptoms is the rpm go up and down when I drive the car, like on the highway, and it shift gear hard sometimes like kicking really hard when it goes to gear, or it shift the gear late feel like the rpm need to go higher for shift gear Could it be only the torque converter?? Ya sure understand, did you get ur car plugged in to tcu to se is it a solonide issue , if it’s vibrating and the rev counter is fluctuating at speed more than likely it’s the torque but that is a handy fix in my eyes

I am curious of the same thing. My car was working okay except for some occasional slipping in 1st gear that I thought was a from a dirty valve or solenoid. It didn’t do it all the time though. Would rev up higher and have a rough shift often from 1st to 2nd though. Fluid was dark initially. Started doing small changes every day if 1-2 qts, but it didn’t seem to help. On the last change I did, I noticed the car didn’t want to reverse well. Seemed to take some extra oomph to get it to move. Did a fluid change and took it out for a test spin and had a CEL come on for torque converter clutch solenoid stuck off code and lost all forward and reverse gears. Car was stuck. Now, it just revs in forward and back, like it’s in neutral. Gonna do a pressure check to see if I have any fluid pressure to rule out a bad pump. All throughout this, I had no issues with any of the other forward gears. They all shifted and worked fine before it completely failed. In fact, just before the last fluid change, I drove the car 25 miles to see if I could get it to act up and it did at the last stop before I got home. I’m thinking the torque converter took a dump and that it is causing the TCC solenoid to be stuck on because the torque converter stator isn’t turning the input shaft, which is causing no fluid to pump. But I am pretty lost on the whole thing. A used transmission is cheap enough - I am probably gonna go that route.

I’m having the same issue. Took it to a local shop with a scanner and they said it’s the clutches in the transmission, talked to a transmission shop and he said sounds like the torque converter to me. But I’ve researched and researched until my fingers hurt, it could be the valve body, the filter. Not sure how he knew it was the clutches when so many things can do the exact same thing as worn clutches.

what car was this? i have the somewhat same issue on my truck, the torque converter locked up and the trans overheated, i had to refill oil and took it to a local mechanic. they said it was the clutches that was burned and the solenoids was also burned. and i asked him how much it would cost me to fix it and he said it would be around 500-1000 dollars. but when i called an automatic transmission mechanic they said they had to overhaul the whole thing and it would run me about 6000 dollars excluding all the transportation costs@@TheCoolKidsClub

@@StupidaFackingGame. I had weird shifting above 35mph then when it hit 50 or shove it shuddered really bad. Then when I gave it gas it made it way way worse. But when I left off the gas. It got better. Turned out to be Infact the torque converter. I put some red shudder fix in it and it fixed for about 5 miles. Then started back. That’s when I got confirmation that it’s the torqe converter

I have a 2015 Buick lacrosse. I have taken it to Buick dealership to check the torque converter. They test drove it and said its the torque converter. 24 hours later call and said found some metal flakes in the bottom of the pan. And i now need a transmission. But the pan have a magnet in the bottom to pull metal flakes to the bottom ? RIGHT are wrong. So im asking do i need a transmission now are can go with just the torque converter. Help Please ..

If too many metal shavings are found in the pan, then the transmission likely has issues. The small magnet will only have a few very small flakes. If you don't trust them, maybe you can get a second opinion.

But when I step on it and it down shuts it revs high and doesn’t catch. Also wondering if tcc solenoid was not a direct fit as it was hard to find. Said for Chevy 2500 not 1500 but thought they had same trans
