Bad CHANEL Vibes: Worth $1200? Designer Leather Goods Overrated

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Why pay for designer label prices when you can save hundreds with artisan-made leather crafts? Designer price tags don't all go into quality materials and craftsmanship. More often than not you're just paying for the brand's prestige.
Watch how I contacted one of Chanel's advisor to ask if the product's leather is made of full-grain, top grain, or other information that were not available on their website. Are their products really worth your money or are there much better alternatives in the market?

Exactly! I think Hermes has the *best* version of this. You need to establish a buying history with them before you might be offered the chance to buy one of their Birkin bags - and you better take what you're offered or they won't offer again. Its an amazing job of using high pressure sales through exclusivity to get people to pay enormous amounts of money for the prestige. @@cuzuvmcvoy

The worst thing is Chanel is known for snobbish and terrible service. One time the salesperson laughed at me (Florence store) when I asked about a highly coveted black bag after I queued 30 minutes to get into the store. He said we have no black bags for you here. So the inflated price is not even about better service or luxury shopping experience. They mostly made me feel like an idiot for wanting to buy their stuff. I had pretty much similar experiences in Singapore, South Korea, Australia, Austria, Italy or France. The one place where I actually received good service was in Prague.

Seriously! The leathers that Hermes uses are top-notch (I believe they get the first pick of hides) and their craftsmanship is outstanding (those stitches!), but that doesn’t justify spending over 10K on a bag. You can often get very similar quality from independent shops, often using the exact same leathers as Hermes, for only around 2K. The one good thing is that compared to other luxury brands, Hermes pays all their leather workers decently and respects them for the work they do. But you can get the same thing from any independent leather shop.

@@welcherg they make better quality saddles as they are designed to last longer. they are way cheaper in price, despite costing more to make. honestly I see people go on about these bags, I don't get it at all. the leather will be great I'm sure, but nothing compared to that price, it's not possible. that would have to be some kind of magic cow or magic crocodile if we're talking about actual quality difference for that price, even 2k wise. there are lots of people in the world capable of being excellent at stitching, I doubt very much their wages for their labour reflect anything in that extortionate price - especially considering the prices of saddles. their whole tactic is slimy, it just preys on the same idea of exclusive classist bs were they purposefully limit supply - and not because they actually spend that long making them. the bags they make you can get for far less than 2K. I see hermes bags second hand after a few years, they're JUST as busted as any other leather bag from regular use. if it becomes slightly worn it loses an immense amount of value. and I swear the shameless journalists trying to fool people to buy these bags as an investment should face consequences. these people don't know that can absolutely not be guaranteed, it's far more likely they will lose money in the long run. my parents repair and sell high-quality antique porcelain and clocks - manufacturers go in and out of fashion all the time. when they randomly go out of fashion for a period, they lose a lot of value even if the supply is more likely to have declined. and these are antiques! not something as volatile as fashion trends! not to mention they just look like any bag my mum buys from the charity shop lol. and that is fine! but the audacity for some of these snobs who try to shame others buying sane priced bags for it being "low-quality" and thinking theirs will last long, when it just outs them as clueless, artless, classist snobs. I don't mean that to people who have been manipulated by marketing tactics to buy these bags, I mean that only about the truly classist people who try to make women feel bad about buying a bag that cost £200. they never provide any proof of these bags lasting longer, because it doesn't actually happen. the style of the bag is so common too, what is exclusive about something that gets duped over and over?

A lot of luxury sales associates go off on the basis of the brand. They focus on sales and targets more than the actual quality. You’d think they know their product info inside out but truth is, they only know what the brand tells them (such as caviar leather vs grained leather). Some customers (not all) of luxury brands know this but they continue to buy the products because of the value they hold, sacrificing some product quality. It’s about economic effect. So no, I don’t think these luxury brands will go down anytime soon. This youtube channel is doing something different. As Tanner is a leather educator and the audience will have a clearer idea of what they’re getting into through the videos, we’ll see more sophisticated buyers in the future. For this reason, I do hope he continues this series and not diverge from his core business, possibly amp up on marketing. Best of luck!

I bought a Louis Vuitton speedy bandouliere 30 for $2,030 about 4.5 years ago. Now it costs $2,750. The luxury prices are increasing fast. Do I use it a lot? Actually, no. I just bought it to make myself feel good because coming from a very poor family as a kid, I could finally afford to buy a "luxury" item that I could call my own. It basically is a form of self-affirmation and self-validation that yes, I've made it. But after buying the LV bag, the more I felt insecure. I felt pretentious and ashamed that here I am, a middle class woman wanting to show off that I'm so well-off. Do I deserve to have the LV bag? Of course I do! Is it worth it? Maybe for self-assurance, yes. Will I buy another one? Heck, NO! I'll just stick to the good old coach handbags. I feel like it's more my style and my status. After watching Tanner, I've realised that we're really just paying for the name. So yeah, I think I'll spend my money on gold and maybe cheaper bags like Coach, Polene, Teddy Blake, etc... But I live in Australia. We pay a premium here for everything because of shipping. So yeah, Coach it is! As according to Tanner, the brass and leather of Coach are fantastic for the reasonable price we pay.

A similar comparison can be made for Chanel's perfumes. Chanel's marketing likes to boasts that they use expensive floral ingredients like jasmine, rose, orris etc but how much of it really makes it into the actual perfume juice? Perfume is a cash cow for these brands and it would be in their interest to maximise profits from these avenue. I am assuming they will do the same with sunglasses and leather goods. The brand cannot survive on ready to wear and haute couture sales.

Luxury shopping is about the perception of being part of an exclusive group. In the beginning, ie, Hermes, even as recent as 50 years ago, there was an artisan aspect which set it apart from the rest. Very few people knew this brand back then. The escalation of the prices every 6 months has a lot to do with the cost of marketing, advertising, and all the ancillary costs attached to building a luxury brand. I noticed this with Prada about 20 years ago. The quality went down and the prices started going up. The business owner felt that the status and celebrity appeal would attract the customers. He was correct. It got to the point that anything they could slap their triangle on was costly. It was the perceived value of the logo that kept customers buying and inflated the bottom line.

I really appreciate this video but it's often misconstrued that the pricetag just includes cost of material and labor. Big fashion houses like Chanel have a huge amount of overhead including everything from manufacturing and leasing boutique spaces in fancy areas and shopping malls plus all the employees involved with the operations, to marketing with huge ad campaigns and celebrity sponsors and fashion shows, etc etc. Plus they have a design team and executive team to pay and they have to remain profitable to continue operating. When an individual chooses to purchase from a luxury brand, they are paying for the intangibles - the brand, the status, the history. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but hey, to each their own!

I agreed with you to some extend. Yes. These fashion houses pay a lot of overhead money. But their medium flap bag should not cost close to 10K while the the quality has gone down significantly. And now, they make it almost impossible to buy. With all the mania happening, I believe they will be more expansive than Hermes in less a decade (some of their bags are already more expensive than Hermes now).

Actually all these arguments is the same as the luxury watch industry.... Nobody actually needs a watch that tells time these days. But people are still paying crazy prices for it. Cause they consider it an art piece as well. The watchmakers and designers all needs to be paid as well too and their salary ain't cheap. luxury leather bags as well have designers that are highly paid to design them, making them art pieces as well.... We can't just compare a Bags that are designed by highly paid designers, highly marketed advertisements, prestige that comes with them, and bags that hold their price some even higher than retail....... to leatherbags designed by someone unknown. But I understand your point. Luxury items are just not for anyone. And I still love your videos!!!!

Buying anything from the fashion house definetely comes with the prestige and the brand name. It depends on what society that someone associate them self with. In my society, definetely brand name is what matters. Unfortunately… 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank you for your educative videos. I have become more careful and selective in my purchase. I become more apreciative towards small leather craftman that they are passionate about the leather, not brand name.

So much money is paid for new bags from luxury brands.

I get what he saying about the pricing, but we also have to keep in mind if you know anything about business, you have to pay the employee that sells you that bag, the retail space rent which is exorbitant, electricity, wifi, shipping to get the bag there plus all the customs fees, it’s a lot of things that go into that. So yes if you were just making the bag and selling it from your location to whoever walks in, the price that he tells you is a fair price. But if you have to pay all of those fees it changes the cost.

I’m not justifying the recent price increases, they’re just egregious. But to sit here and make a video and say that that item that you’re buying for $1000 shouldn’t cost more than 200 doesn’t make sense when you have stores outlets manufacturing shipping etc. What this particular man is doing is he’s telling you how much it would cost for HIM to make this item and sell it directly to you via the Internet which is why he has a link for a website for you to buy directly from him or his peers. Perhaps he’s trying to grow his family business and I gave him props for that, congratulations. But don’t sit there and deceive the public because by not factoring in all of the other things that account for why that price is there. Now yes the luxury industry is freaking insane right now and they are increasing prices at an astronomical rate and the quality is not there anymore but the price prior to these increases made sense. Now they’re just being plain old greedy. But if the bag or wallet costs $200 to make, then it’s not egregious for you to charge five times that to cover customs, taxes, transportation of leather to manufacturing plant and then after the item has been processed and package shipped to get delivered to the stores or to a warehouse that then ships it to get delivered to the stores, employees, benefits, commissions, manufacturing, rent of locations, electricity, marketing, free products to social influencers, online presence marketing, selling at a loss to employees to get items off of the shelves to introduce new product etc. We have to be realistic and it’s his duty if he’s going to make these videos to be as honest as possible. He never mentions any of those things. None of them. And that doesn’t even include a profit. Remember some of these companies have to have the leather custom dyed and treated. I get where he’s coming from and I applaud what he’s doing, I think it’s fascinating, but the truth is depending on where you are in the world and the quality of leather the prices are going to be different. And then to ship that leather to the manufacturing company for them to assemble it that’s an additional cost as well. So he’s not factoring any of that in. That’s all I’m saying. So when I buy a luxury item I am at peace with the price that I’m paying because I understand business and how all of that’s factored into that price, however these price increases are unnecessary and I am not buying those items anymore, I may actually jump on his website and pick some stuff up to be quite honest. Not because of the quality because the quality on his website doesn’t come close to the quality of a luxury item, the quality on his website is the stuff that you buy when you travel internationally and you see people selling stuff on the street or in like these leather shops. But it’s nowhere close to luxury. All luxury items have a distinct feel, smoothness, attention to detail and perfection to them that makes them luxury items. Regardless I have enough luxury items I’m not spending my hard on money up on the new prices that are coming out. That’s just insane and even if you have the money to spend the money on that is insane when you can literally buy a little house for a homeless person for the same price as some of these bags. We could literally eradicate homelessness with everyone who was going to buy a Chanel or an Hermès bag buy a little mobile home to a homeless person.

All genuine handcrafted designer accessories have a serial number. If you have any doubts about it’s authenticity, you can check it for authenticity. The quilting is hand stitched, not machine stitched. And hand stitched quilting is extremely labour intensive. Certainly more than $40. It’s not just brand name you pay for. The zipper quality metal is anti corrosive and their metal fittings are generally better quality.

So when you purchase anything from a "luxury" brand, you are basically subsidizing that company (and most likely stockholders who are in a tax bracket above you): above and beyond any actual value of the item and what you would normally pay by purchasing a similar product. You are paying for whatever satisfaction you garner from knowing that you own a product from their brand, based on their exclusivity, cachet and rarity. You are paying for whatever "status" you believe is valued by anyone who sees you utilizing said product. Of course, there is also the need for esteem, self or otherwise in play. Do you need validation from peers or others recognizing your status thru your apparel? If the purchase of an item from a luxury brand gives you true pleasure, for the craftsmanship, beauty or appreciation, then you, be you. Of course, there is also the financial appreciation or collectors aspect. People collect wine, or cars, or art; also designer pieces for pleasure and its value as a financial tool; you need to know your market. Caveat emptor.

Yes, for 1200 Eur you can make two bespoke bags like this one, made of crocodile or any other leather by experienced craftsman. All true, but there is also little thing called Free Market of goods and services and if millions of consumers are willing to pay 1200 to Chanel for something that clearly cost 100 to produce then so be it.
