There is a difference between being a Hermes' leather expert and a leather expert. Clemence is Hermes branding of a leather that is basically a juvenile bullskin. Just like barenia is a special name for a type of leather. It doesn't mean that he doesn't know leather. I have friends in the industry and they are not going to be Hermes experts on Hermes special branding of their leather types. Its not like saying chevre, lambskin, etc. If you want to buy some similar leather you can search for taurillion, shrunken calf (if you want closer to togo).

Very fair point you make Someone Out There but the thing is he did not make a generic video about any old no brand bag and any leather. He decided to make a video about an Hermes bag. We know how important it is to Hermes and their clients to properly differentiate their leathers, types of leathers, colors and so on. So in other words, if he wants to make a video about Hermes leather bags, the least he could have done, as a leather expert, would have been to research the bare minimum about Hermes Evelyne bags and their leathers. Cuz otherwise he comes across as somebody who took the word of none other than the realreal 🥴 for the leather and authenticity of an Hermes bag he bought from them. You can see how that could come across to the viewers who are actually very invested into Hermes lingo and standards? I understand that the majority of his viewers are probably not into luxury brands anyway but the few that are might feel like his lack of research into Hermes could potentially be seen as unprofessional, given that he is, after all, making a video about Hermes. Furthermore, why all the rush to dissect any Hermes bag? Why not be patient and wait till you score an authentic one directly from the Hermes website? Why the need to push out this Hermes bag dissection video so soon? Oh right… cuz he wanted a lot of views quickly. Allegedly. So are we sacrificing quality for a quick video production? Seems like what Chanel is doing with their leather bags since a while: make them and make them quick for quick profits despite the fact that quality and quality control suffer under those fast paced rhythms. How is what he is doing with this fast produced and not fully thought through video of his any different from some leather brands churning out subpar leather products very quickly just for quick maximized profits? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I love Tanners videos because they’re informative and he’s super laid back and not “extra”. Tanner is the reason I’ve sold my YSL and Gucci bags and I don’t regret it one bit. Social media has brainwashed people into thinking that luxury is the best in quality when in fact it’s not. Idc about a name, prestige or history of a brand because in reality all you’re paying for is a name! I will never fathom people paying 4-5 figures for a bag…it really is mental…

I think making an occasional mistake does not take away your expertise. He makes excellent, non-biased content, that is actually very insightful. Never felt pushed to buy anything from him. I like that he shows how the bags are made, and the amount of work that goes into each, then encourages you to decide what you want to do, depending on how much you value status that comes with a name brand. I also like that he reviews affordable items, and will tell you hey this is made really well, and this other thing is garbage. That is incredibly awesome. You make a few valid points but your dismissive attitude, petty comments, and eye rolling just come across as extremely unlikeable. Saying things like "i dont want to throw shade, he seems like a good family man, but maybe too perfect?" ...that IS shade, for no reason. Also, would you tell an art critic that because they can't paint, they can't recognize excellent artworks or techniques? That is a terrible argument.

I've always correlated luxury products with high quality craftsmanship and materials, plus, it's pedigree and heritage and history of innovation and leader in style and fashion. But his content def has opened my eyes on the fact that you're also paying for so many things and it doesn't always equate to high quality and craftsmanship. Oh please. Everyone is mad when someone exposes the quality versus the cost. Any well made bag can be repaired, that's not just a Hermes thing. A better question would be to ask why are these brands justifying spending thousands on marketing? It's capitalism. Plain and simple. If it were about practicality, aesthetics, or quality then Hermes couldn't stand up because other brands could do the same. You question his intentions but you're doing what you accuse him of. We need to practice critical thinking. I am not coming for him the way you imply. The world is not always black and white. See it this way: he can dissect and criticize and analyze other brands and their quality of leather. So why can’t I analyze and criticize his work too? Why is that off limits but him criticizing and analyzing other brands’ work is ok? And don’t forget that Tanner is a brand too. He is a brand on social media. We have the right to question his quality too. Its fair game. Point of the matter is this: in his tease video on the Hermes Evelyne bag he comes across as ill prepared on the Hermes subject. Not knowing what leather Evelyne bags are made in and seemingly trusting the realreal enough to purchase a bag there and thinking it will surely be authentic. You can surely see how it can come across as sus to say the least. At least to Hermes leather fans and connoisseurs… hopefully this clears up the misunderstanding and you are less upset. Xoxo

See, i love, love classics with a quirk, but when she went through tanners video, she took what he said completely differently than i took it. Tanner says constantly that these brands have prestigious reputations to uphold, marketing, etc, and the logo is what you're paying for. He does give these brands props by stating that most use full grain beautiful leather. They just emboss the leather, which takes away from the natural feel and beauty. He also says he does these videos to promote other brands (such as polene, he raved about their leather) by saying if you just want a luxury material bag, go with xx brand if the logos arn't important to you. He already did an Hermès wallet, and he said/showed how amazing the leather was and how they were hardly corrected. He raved about bottega veneta as well (purple bag) but was not happy with a wallet. When it comes to us luxury lovers, i can see how some may get very offended or upset by what he's doing or saying and question what he's saying. You can believe what he's saying or not, but he definitely seems like someone (has even mentioned he's not really personally into luxury) he's not super knowledgeable about the brands themselves. He's just breaking these bags apart to see what their process is with the leather and if the leather is full grain/high quality. I've seen so many go after him, but at the end of the day, it's his opinion & i personally like how he is dissecting these bags to show us if they are even leather or not (ie bottega veneta wallet).

Respectfully, put down the Koolaid. Hermes and other luxury leather brands do not have a monopoly on the best craftspeople and knowhow. I have seen exceptional leather workers in small unknown shops, and I have also seen utter crap coming out of the supposed top branded luxury leather stores in Paris, Milan and New York. The idea that there is special know-how that can't be replicated or is difficult to replicate by small workshops is untrue. High quality leather work is a very learnable trade, and the know-how is more a commodity than a trade secret. However, replicating these luxury brands and what they represent is very difficult. That's where lies the competitive advantage. And that advantage and intangible value -- and the status and trust it confers -- can usually be maintained unless a rarely occurring brand disruption takes place.

If you follow him you would know he himself admits he can’t make the Hermes bags (or anything as he’s more into the leather tanning side of things). He did an interview with Peter Nitz who has a leather atelier where they make gorgeous looking bags. Peter talks about Hermes bags because he was trained by a Hermes artisan and has another Hermes artisan now working for him. He talks about authenticating Hermes bags. This dude never claimed to make bags and openly says he doesn’t know much about making bags. Whether or not he knows leather I don’t know but that’s supposedly his thing so he’s analysing the quality of the leather, which is nice to know. I think all of us who are into luxury know that we’re not paying only for material and craftsmanship.

I watched the full podcast with Nitz because unlike Tanner, when I go into making a video about the quality of somebody’s content, I actually DO prepare myself. Finally, how is my video analyzing his content any different from him analyzing the leather of others? So he is allowed to do it and question something but heaven forbid anybody were to question him. I hope you see how hypocritical people’s stances are on this matter.

Hello Dacob. :) Kelly is a practical bag? :D It's actually the most unpractical bag. You need to carry it by its handle thus you cannot use one of your hands and your hand hurts. If you carry it on your shoulder with the strap, it's very ugly. And you need half an hour to open it and to close it. Luxury is convenience, and Kelly is not convenient at all. There are definitely authentic Evelyns made from togo leather. It is difficult to tell the difference between the two leathers on a bag that small. It is usually when you get up to B30 size or larger, where you can clearly feel the weight of clemence. Togo and clemence are bull leather: togo is from a mature bull, clemence is from a younger bull. Togo leather is usually 'tight' with smaller grains but there are also togo leathers with the larger grains, softness and slouch of clemence. There are also some clemence leathers with veining if the younger bull was more bigger. Some SAs can't even tell the difference depending on the particular hide that is available that year.

I have found some brands that use the highest quality leather sourced from American cattle and bison made in American tanneries and put together perfect - now I cannot bring myself to buy designer brands - I know it costs them billions to build up their brand and rent their beautiful stores, etc. - but I dont really care - all I care about is the hard earned dollars that I spend. I guess as I have gotten older I really do not care to impress anyone - I can buy anything I want so I just buy for quality.

The main issue is that there are top quality products that are fugly & poor quality products that are beautifully designed - true luxury products should be top quality + beautifully designed. Unfortunately many brands are now selling items that are worse quality than their replicas - so that eradicates their investment value & encourages the replica market - which in turn further lowers the scarcity & prestige through mass conspicuous consumption by the trashy peasants - LV & Chanel being great examples...

If you are familiar with bags from the late ‘40’s and ‘50’s, you know that this shape was popular at that time. Hermés has managed to make this shape timeless. There’s something to be said about that.

I’m so glad you took the time to make this video Dacob, I follow Tanner and I do enjoy his video’s, i anyhow don’t like his products, but that’s beside the point, he dissect store bought items and tries to debunk the cost and reveal the quality or the lack of…when it comes to quality I sure trust him. Cost of manufacturing on the other hand is so complex that it’s different for each brand, and each factory and also manufacturing costs have very little to do with retail prices, me working in the fashion industry and also earning my degrees in fashion related studies that’s the first thing I’ve learnt. Going back to Tanner, he has made a video mentioning the boutique locations and the cost of the experience, but he targets clients who have no appreciation of “luxury” period. Still every time he touches Hermes he mentions the simple construction but always calls out the highest quality, most amazing leather and the highest level of craftsmanship regardless of belittling the complexity of the design. I will never budge on my respect for Hermes as a brand for the simple reason: they will rather have empty shelves and no online inventory than compromising the quality of their products. They operate their own workshops, train their own employees regardless of experience, so they can provide customers with the quality they built their brand on, and what is expected from them. Hermes prices are on par with many if not most of the high fashion and heritage designer brands, yet Hermes is the only one I never had a problem with, and I have never received a compliment on an unidentifiable unbranded leather good until I purchased the Hermes Apple Watch (dumb purchase but that’s another topic) but the barenia leather watchband had people stopping me to ask where it’s from because it’s beautiful, and that in itself speaks volumes of Hermes leather. Also fun fact: while watching your video I went on the realreal and there are so many Togo evelyne bags, I gonna reach out to my salesperson at Hermès just to hear what she got to say 😂 Thanks for a video where you said everything that most of us been thinking. ❤

I would honestly respect these luxury brands if they brought their collections down to two shows a year and they give us quality products worth purchasing, they could honestly keep their prices down because they’re not trying to do so many fashion shows and collections etc. and it would create more demand. Because once it sells out you have to wait till the next collection and now you’re really excited to see what they’re going to bring out next. And even creating a line and saying we only made 1000 of these bags then you can charge a lot of money and have that exclusivity. But that’s just my theory

I visited the online shop of Tanner and I wasn't impressed by the products. They seemed alright but not my cup of tea. They lacked luxury in my eyes. He's not entirely wrong with the point he's trying to make but I agree that you're not paying for just the product when you're buying from a big brand. Personally I can't justify to myself a bag that's more than 1000€. There are luxury brands with comparable quality to that of a big brand but in lower price range. There's a tradeoff to be made, price vs brand recognition.

Thank you for opening up my eyes. I went to his website to see the bags he sells, and it doesn’t mention where they are Made. But I did notice that he prices the bags he destroys within the price range of the bags he sells. However, the quality of his product does not look similar to the bags he destroys. I’m not justifying the price of the bags he destroys-they can be less expensive and still make a significant profit. But if everyone had it, no one would want it because it wouldn’t be as remarkable. That said, some prices are ridiculously expensive-$30,000 for a bag. And I understand why some people may be angry about the price since it’s just not attainable for most people-$10,000 or more for a bag is pretty outrageous. Then they see people buying multiple 10,000k plus bags through social media. That’s why more individuals fake their wealth, companies have started restricting returns, and people are buying replicas. Plus, some companies have done something similar in the past, but instead of pricing their items high for only wealthy individuals-companies have only wanted certain people in their clothing-thin and beautiful.

That's not what Dacob said, watch the video again. Did you go watch the 50 second video that Tanner made? Did you see the leathers? I am no expert but they look like 2 different leathers with the purse having Clemence and the unrolled dyed half skin being Togo.....Dacob is right, Tanner is just dogging other brands while selling his own brand. Its obvious what Tanner is doing-its a shitty marketing strategy and if Tanner was truly being honest he would have bought directly from Hermes to inspect a truly authentic piece.

One thing that is important to remember with mainstream luxury brands as opposed to independent craftsmen is the service you get. When you buy something from LV, Hermes, or Chanel and you have a problem with it, you can take it to any of their hundreds of stores worldwide and they will take care of you. When you buy from small, independent brands, it is more difficult to get service or repairs in case something goes wrong. Especially for people who don't live in major cities, the service/repair aspect is a very important consideration when buying luxury.

It’s like the gentleman who cuts shoes in half to see their construction. I’ve learned quite a bit from both of them on bag and shoe assembly. As for the ‘down with luxury’ comments that are posted, it’s basically people showing their frustrations - they would like to have those items but for what ever reason cannot justify the purchase. If your budget is Coach, that’s wonderful…if its LV, that’s wonderful too!

What Tanner continually fails to see is that what something is "worth" is simply and entirely what people are willing to pay. It's not a bare formula of the combined cost of labor and goods, nor is it even the label. An antique baseball card is nothing but OLD ink and paper with the labor cost meaningless in 2023, overall virtually "worthless" -- but it could go for a thousand dollars because it's worth that much to people who prize such things.

Dacob, on second view and since we were on the subject of research, I looked him up, reading some articles back in 2021 including one from FT. His creds seem to speak something but what I took away is that he did not hide that he was hoping that this increased viewer/ follower base “might build interest in his own brand”. So your suspicion has been confirmed. Still does not change my stance that his marketing strategy does not make me want to buy his leather goods. I also looked into the IG post and comments (the very slow sleuth that I am lol😅). I think that right now he may be in the process of having his Hermes bag authenticated (I understood his response to mean that this has not been authenticated yet ; he said they will look into it) and for all we know, he’s going to end up claiming a refund from the RealReal (is that allowed? I don’t know). So we may all have to wait a bit longer before that axe falls into the poor Evelyne’s bag. 😉

Thank you for this video Dacob! I agree with your thoughts. I watched a few of Tanner’s videos and felt they where missing the points that you brought up: A luxury handbag is more than just the materials is made of. There’s the design, training, marketing, years and years to build up a reputation etc. I also felt a lot of resentment from those who commented on his videos. Unnecessary negativity…Ultimately nobody forces anyone to buy from a luxury brand.

I really think you just have to take it for what it is. I watched his videos for quite some time. He seems like a kind person. I purchased his long wallet made of quilted lambskin that he touted as being just as good as Chanel, and i have to say that I was not really impressed with the leather. The craftsmanship was pretty good, and there was beautiful sections of leather on the inside. However, the lambskin leather on the outside overall felt dry, looked matte and did not feel luxurious, nothing compared to Chanel. I think that definitely taught me not to trust anyone automatically, even if it seems like they know what they're talking about. Everyone is trying to make a living. I have also promised myself that I will never purchase anything that an influencer has been sponsored for.

I've watched his videos and I am always baffled at his disrespect of other people's work. Just because he charges $0.50 for per hour for his labour doesn't mean that is the rate that others charge. If you think a product is "overpriced" you are not the target customer. Luxury goods are no one's birthright. People feel that they are entitled to own these brands and will buy fakes to pretend to be in the economic sphere to be seen with what appears to be such goods. But who are you kidding, you know you are a fraud when you are buy a fake of a product beyond your means. People being vexed at the prices of luxury purses shows how screwed up people are.

He does fall to mention everything is stated location of the boutiques, marketing website, engineers, photographers employees, wages, benefits, packaging, shipping, Designers, etc. I looked into his company that makes bangs, and they don’t say where they’re made, and the quality is not as excellent as some of these bags are destroyed. I’m not justifying the price of those bags. They could be cheaper, and they could make less of a profit, but he’s comparing apples to oranges.

What I find annoying about Tanner is the stupidity of his calculations. Material plus wage for the worker is how he calculates the worth of a bag. Running a business requires much more than that. I also don't trust his knowledge about the prices of leather and hardware. Tanner seems to be an experienced cobbler though. So I do trust his judgement about how well a bag is crafted.

I totally agree with that comment. This guy probably has developed an interest in leather and is now trying to come off like an expert in everything leather. In reality, he just did basic research and had funds to develop a leather goods business. He does not seem to have a long history in the field so it confuses me why people take his word for anything. Anyone can go on the internet and say/ do whatever they want. At the end of the day, we as consumers should determine for ourselves, if an item is “worth it”. Now for my honest personal opinion, I’ve seen his products and they lack any interest in design. They are either boring or copy another brands style. I see leatherwork as a type of art and he really lacks any creativity that would make me want to purchase from him. I won’t purchase something just cause it’s a luxury item they have to catch my eye. To each their own but don’t tell me what not to buy lol

Critical thinking is not valued across society these days, nor is it taught in schools. It’s a shame. Yes I’ve noticed that almost everyone under his comments are vindictively angry at luxury brands. When I first saw them I commented back a few times abt luxury being ore than “that” or production pricing varying across the globe, etc… BUT, quickly realized it was obvs. pointless… I, as we all did, also IMMEDIATELY saw through the raw materials/cost estimates, bc ANYONE with any analytical ability and/or knowledge of merchandising, particularly fashion merchandising, would know that brand don’t just base prices on raw materials and hours of craftsmanship… but at the very least, marketing/promotions, stores, staff, websites etc. The fact that ppl don’t think further into pricing past what points he talks abt is almost astounding, smh 🤦‍♀️
