well, the guy may have rated it generously. the cardboard is a bit offputting to me, and I don't know if the guy was able to judge whether the lamination would be durable. and that thick plastic on the leather certainly wasn't "minimal finish", even if what was underneath was real leather surface grain rather than a split leather surface.

I would guess that they are made in asia, I think the big fashion brands have most of their production volume made in asia, and only run small productions for their highest grade products in places like italy.

I like how many people are saying ‘oh it’s just 50 bucks of materials, why pay so much?’ And many of them likely have entire careers where, if we were to go purely by material costs, would be a bunch of word documents saved onto a hard drive. Should we just assume then, that their entire careers are worth the cost of a hard drive? Of course not. Sewing a straight line, turning corners, casting brass and tanning leather are all craft skills honed over years of work. So fair enough, it’s not worth the whole 1,100 dollars but it would be silly to just think you should be able to get that bag for 115.

Any luxury brand name is never worth it as far as functionality goes. You're only getting value from these things if you have social circles that judge you on them and you consider it a good use of money to keep those social circles from looking down on you.

haha thats one way to look at it, though that depends on what part of the world you live in: i doubt most people are vapid socialites. I used to work in high end retail and I knew a of of people who bought luxury to feel fashionable or trendy. A lot of customers buy luxury for themselves too; if your spending that kind of money you better enjoy your purchase at the end of the day regardless of who you hang with.

I think the mid-tier luxury brands can be worth it though because the craftsmanship and materials for these brands are often excellent. I have a Coach backpack that was the only bag I owned for 3 years ( I have since* bought a briefcase for work) whilst I was commuting on public transit to school and work. This thing went everywhere with me and it is in fantastic condition. The seams and colour have all held up even as I continue to use it. Contrastingly, I have many friends and classmates who bought and wore out multiple purses and backpacks within the same amount of time (frayed edges, ripped stitching, faded colour, discoloured hardware, etc.) and they paid for knock-off or cheap brands. I'm not saying that these bags are the only way to get what you want (if you take care of your bags or they don't see much of the world then maybe you don't need to go up in price range, for example). However for those of us who want to have bags that are a functional investment and overall, last much longer so that we reduce waste, paying for a brand that has a reputation for quality work is definitely sensible and not necessarily about social clout.

Yes, the quality of the hardware is important. Cheap, plasticy zips, chains etc is a big no for expensive handbags
This is why I draw the line at Coach, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors. These other high end brands are just charging you for the luxury of wearing THEIR name! I think this has to be the greatest con to ever exist. $100 worth of materials and labor to then charge over $1,000! 😮

Holly Shat! Nice video. I got into leather couple years ago and got a few nice shoes/boots, belts, and gloves now. I like learning about clothes recently. Classic fashion and functionality but I never considered the actual cost of a product though I do get stuff at good prices by buying sales or second hand for things like belts. My wife, however, bought a Coach bag for like $1200 or $1400. I did research and could tell it was well made but still the price just seemed outrageous. At least it was much bigger than the one in this video. One thing though is the $115 price tag. I wish that was broken down more. I mean $115 for materials AND labor. If this was handmade, which I'm assuming it is, how long would that take and how much are they paid an hour? If this is machine made I can understand but $115 still seems so low. Probably the name branding still working it's magic on me lol. After watching this video I have a better appreciation for the price for Men's items. Sure there are overpriced men's items but when I'm looking for something of quality, like leather shoes, I can find brands like Meermin that are great for a super low price when on sale or Allen Edmonds seconds or sales when they go on.
Very interesting.

That all usually comes down to size and thusly increases the price. Even the shell cordovan Horween Adam Grove is referring to is a small specific area of the cow's body. It has more to do with yield, just like snake or other small animals, those tend to be more expensive because you either have to make only exclusively small accessories or seam and pattern around small pieces to make larger styles. Also, leather tends to be less expensive when it's a byproduct vs a skin that has been raised for that purpose.
This is a brilliant idea for a brand analysis!

I think $115 is a bit low for the estimation. That snake buckle alone would hike up the price, depending on what it's made of. If that bag were made in the US, it would definitely be more like $300+ for labor and materials. $115 seems more like middleman-making-money-off-of-a-sweatshop kind of pricing. I've paid $115 for a plain, smooth leather bag from an artisan in Europe, so with all the stitching required for this Gucci bag and the metal, the estimation is kinda off, IMO.
@anthonyd9844
8 ай бұрын
Well, I used to work at Versace and Balenciaga. I also knew staff at LV, Prada and Gucci; we often talked about which products to avoid buying that season which were poorly made. Most hardware for luxury bags are made of a cheap brass or steel core and then galvanized and plated in a nicer finish. The custom hardware is nice but it wouldn't raise the price too much. a buckle like that ordered in bulk would add maybe 30-40 dollars. Also, there are no leather tannery sweatshops. That is skilled labor; sweatshops are used for construction not fabrication of raw materials like leather.
@chibiusa
8 ай бұрын
@@anthonyd9844 Thanks for the insight! I will clarify that I didn't mean the leather was from a sweatshop; just that a whole bag produced in a sweatshop from, say, China is going to cost far less than a bag 100% made in the USA. So, to me, $115 is a price I'd expect from a middleman/dropshipper who bought bags from China to sell. I paid close to $400 for Made in USA suede roller skates, which sometimes go on sale for $300. So, I would expect a leather bag to cost somewhere in that ballpark. Bags are harder to sew than boots, anyway. (I also got insight into pricing from the Rose Anvil channel, which takes apart shoes and estimates material + labor costs. They also make their own leather products and price them appropriately.) Lots of people speculate that luxury brands get bags and shoes made in China and just do the finishing touches in Italy, France, Spain, etc. so that they can stamp the product with "Made in Italy" or whatever country. It's assumed that that is why the quality can be poor or hit-or-miss. But is that true?
