Cute little duck paradise

This is the nicest, calmest video I've seen. I could watch them for hours. Beautiful sounds, too. Looks like you have paradise on earth. Very very nice.

nice setup... you should always have water in the coop part... see what they did 1st out. drink water!!! this will help keep them healthy... great setup & video. thanks for sharing...

I like your Duck coup...:-) I live in WA, so I'm putting styrofoam against the walls in mine for installation, and a cover for the roof on the run, for all the rain. I also used a cement mixing tub, sold at lowes for around $7. ....:-) Also, a doggie door, since I'm never up in the morning. You should check out the feeding system using pvc pipe cut out, they spill way less food....:-) One moe thing, I use cedar chips they sell large bags at Walmart for about $9. In the dog section....:-) Then, every so often, I clean it out and use it for mulch...:-)

Fyi cedar chips give off harmeful fumes as they decompose that can make your duck sick.

They are just cosy in their coop! :)

Sir Klopp ducks mess there water up within minutes even making a large pond filthy. This way the guy can keep it fresh while releasing the dirty water into his yard which is actully a good fertiliser. Win win

That's really excellent. My wife and I have a real fondness for ducks but don't have time to tend to them if we had some. Lovely structure. If it was me who built it, it would have fallen down already. Cheers.

John W MacDonald Thanks for the comment. They really don't require a lot of time. At first, when they were very small, for about a month, we kept them under a heat lamp in our basement. I would give them water and food twice per day and change the pine shavings daily (they poop a lot). Now that we have them outside, it is much easier. We have a five gallon water container and a large feeder. The water and food last about a week or so, longer for the food a little less for the water. I try to change the pool water daily but sometimes I miss a day or two. I like to cut up some fresh fruits and veggies and feed them while they are in the pool. This gives the kids a chance to enjoy feeding them and petting them and they seem to really like the fresh snack. They still poop a lot and I clean out the enclosure once a week, it only takes about $5 worth of pine shavings (I think I will try straw instead, next time just to see which is easier to clean out) and about 30-45 minutes of my time. I let them roam the yard when I'm home and when I am cutting the grass, I take them to our big pond for a swim. They definitely enjoy the water and foraging around the yard. I don't think I am a very big "animal person" but they are fun to watch and the kids have a blast chasing them around the yard, feeding, and petting them. As for the enclosure, you would be surprised at how much you can accomplish once you put your mind to it. I was set on purchasing one and planned to do just that until I realized that although our local Amish Market has tons and tons of chicken coops, they really didn't have what I had in mind. They offered to build something very similar to what I had in mind but I would have spent about $1000 more than the materials cost and it still would not have been exactly what I envisioned. The sense of accomplishment and the $1000 saved were definitely worth it in the end. I work in retail and put in a lot of crazy hours, it's nice to relax in the yard and watch the ducks and kids play together. They are always a hit with our friends and family when we have guests.

we take in unwanted ducklings and chick's and trust me they ate easier than a dog! they are so fun to play with and easy to keep. we even play dress up with them lol

They are pretty notoriously low maintenance. The more room they have the less needed too. A small bowl for their swimming might need new water everyday but a big pond could be a sustainable ecosystem or filter driven. Ducks particularly prefer foraging their own food too, given enough grass to comb for bugs slugs and frogs and things, so very light in feed. But all animals are work of course and you have to check on them. You tend to want to collect the eggs too. They are hardy, don't get sick much and are better vs predators than say chickens. I'd say fair enough if you have no animals but if you own a cat or a dog, they are way less work than that. And you can actually sell the eggs easier than you'd think.

@@CellufunLover yes, they walk themselves, feed themselves even find their own food to a large degree. Fresh water is the only thing for drinking and if you have a small pool for them you have to muck it out. I suppose some would consider collecting the eggs a chore. But even cats without needing walked get sick easier, more vet time & expense, food depacking, they need played with if indoor cats, spaying, declawing, shaving, toys, treats, washed. Ducks clean themselves, eat a bigger diet so can eat your kitchen scraps- big one if you don't like food waste. And best of all, if your cat dies all you get is a stuffed cat. Ducks are a nice family dinner. I only stay on a farm with ducks a few days or weeks a year though so correct me if i'm wrong. But they are much less a headache than chickens, or most other animals of medium size.

Your duckies are soo cute but they do not want to come out to play. How did you hook the water up? do you drain it daily?

hi Mike - Can you give me details on the pond set up you have? It is exactly what we are looking to do, but not sure where to get the basin or stock tank with a bottom drain and stopper and what piping to use for drainage.

Hi. The pond set up works well but I do regret not going with a larger tub. The depth is fine but with 2 full size ducks they are basically swimming in circles like over sized ducks in a tiny carnival game. I think it was a horse trough from Tractor Supply Company that we used. The deck and set up are fairly simple. Just remember to brace the bottom of the tub to handle the weight of the water. For the drain I used a hole saw and a kitchen sink drain attached to some pvc piping to lead away from the enclosure. That water doesn't smell pleasant.

Are Peking ducks noisy...not yours but the other fellas :) I live in the city and a want to get some but want a breed that’s on the quiet side! So far Muscovy have made the list!

Cayuga are noted to be very very quiet if you can get them, particularly even the males. They are very pretty but skittish so lesser on the pet front, though similar for muscovy. Truth is the louder species are the more lovable cuddly ones. I say louder, it is somewhat relative. Ducks stay quiet for periods vs chickens nattering, male ducks are quieter than cockerel ofc, but when many ducks get excited they will honk a lot, such as food. Peking ducks i've heard are chattery like chickens but i'm not sure. Depends just how quiet you need and when. Other things like garden/coop design to reduce noise to your neighbours can help. It isn't always about the animals alone. I have been woken all my life to cats scrapping/shagging in the garden, (and even cockerels beat dogs) and neighbours can be pissy in general for any excuse. So you might have more choice than you might think. And ducks grow quick, you can eat em if they cause too many problems lets be honest.

Need a safe r way for them to get down they look like alesburys ducks so they don’t fly and they get big falling often will hurt or injure them... chickens would be ok with the jump

thanks, yes, we learned this the hard way and soon after installed a more permanent ramp with a barricade made of a couple of pieces of rope

It looks like you posted this just about 1 year ago, how does the size suit the ducks now that they've grown? I am considering either building my own duck coop and if I do I like your design better than others I've seen, but I've been considering buying a small shed at Lowes for them to sleep in, and a dog kennel for their daytime yard. That would cost me about $700 total.

The size is good. I might have made it a little larger if I did it again. I think I would've made the swimming area larger and put the door near the opposite corner to allow for more room in the swimming tank. I open the door and let them wander around the yard when I'm home, but they tend to not stray too far and always head back inside the enclosure before I'm ready to lock them in. It's almost like they know this is 'home." They do not use the inside "nest" area very often, at first I would put them in at night, but after a while I stopped and most times when they are not chasing each other around, they are in the water pond or under the platform. The only problem with a larger "pond" and enclosure, is more to clean and more time filling the tank. It's really not too much trouble and it kind of relaxes me when I'm not running late and have 20 minutes or so to change the water and fill the food and water. I am considering adding a gutter system and water tank that I saw on here to alleviate the need to have a hose running across the yard. I think the materials cost me about $800 or so to build this, but I am no pro at carpentry and I bought all pressure treated wood which is more expensive, of course it would've been cheaper to use regular pine and just paint it to protect it from the elements. That cage is way to small to be a permanent home. They need more room inside the "home" to walk when they need to stay in during cold weather

This video was taken just after building this enclosure and it was new to them, soon after they were more comfortable with the set up.

No it isn't. Truth is, ducks don't even need a pool. It's just a nicety for them.
