Thanks Crochet Baby :-) The worms compost the duck coop right where it lays, but we do clear out the manure and wood chips from out goat pen and put it in a pile where the worms are extremely active. Thank you for sharing!

i think you should mix wood chip with sand and lime (calcium), with 4:2:1 ratio, that will absorb manure much better. And that would be nice if you place the bath pool outside the duck house

I got several loads of wood chips from local tree service companies for a back to eden yard this year, so for the sake of economy I also used the chips to fill my new hen house and run to about 4 inches and have been amazed at how clean, dry, and relatively odor free it remains after three months of use, I go in every couple weeks and turn it over with a rake, as of today still dry down to the floor! First year with chickens so I've never tried anything different but don't plan to either now

Another bedding we use is shredded paper. We shred at home and at work. After the use in the coop it is moved to a composting pile. It works great and Free.

You may do this already, but I have heard that if using paper, you should avoid glossy paper. Could you share what you know or have heard about any particular concerns about type of paper or ink?

Yes, we avoid all glossy paper. Through internet research, I have found that the majority of all inks used now are soy based. When we shred cardboard boxes I remove any portion has has glue attached.....just not sure what is in the glue. One of the things I like about paper is that it is very easy to clean out the coop. We also use saw dust when I can find it for free. Nephew works at a crate building shop, but the owner has horses, so I can't always aquire. Only when there is extra. I am liking your channel, keep up the good work. Also subbed Alderman Farms. They also seem very cool. I sometimes travel for work, maybe if get your way, you let me check out your place. My goal is to be able to work on homestead exclusively. Just gotta keep working at it.

My wife has said no every time I say lets get some ducks. The odd thing is she would let me have Geese which is really too big for our yard. :-( I use straw for my girls bedding. After trying Pine Pellets, wood chips, and others it seems they like straw the best. I think pine would be my preference as it would help acidify our soil which is very alkaline and neutralize our alkaline city water.

This design has my personal touches and I have had some clients throw wheels on it after building for easy portability.

It is rare for us to change, or remove, anything. You see, the worms eat it and make some great soil. I suspect we will do the same thing with the wood chips, but since this is our first time, I cannot rightly say. We do change out the chips in the goat pen about every two weeks, but that is because the manure does not break down as well in there. Instead we dump it other places and let the worms work on it there. Call it a compost pile if you like. Thank you for watching!

We keep them within a portable electric fence that is 50 feet in perimeter and free range them throughout the day. Their house, however is only 4' by 6' and is on skids to move around easily. I'd like to have a big woodchip pile that I can pull from and cover the inside of their house each time I move it (about once a week). Do your ducks get along well with goats? We're looking to get some birds come springtime and chickens were always the first thought... but those ducks are sure cute.

I started off using sand in my chicken coop. I built a giat kitty litter scoop out of a pitch fork and some screen. First of all it was a pain to clean. I had to wear goggles and a dust mask while sifting sand, and each scoop was heavy. Second of all it never really smelled decent after the first week. Now, the "deep litter" method. I began with 6" of wood chips, dry leaves, shredded mulch. I add a little each month, and turn it over a couple times per week. SO MUCH EASIER and NO STINK!

They are Muscovy, and Muscovy are classified as a Duck.

Rice hull would also work. It helps keep the odor down if you change it regularly. Also, the ducks tend to make their nests in the rice hulls too along the edges and corners of their coops. I don't know much about duck varieties but there are some the mother ducks of which all lay their eggs in big nests and they cover them up with the rice hulls, hay or, in this case, wood chips. It is always a joy harvesting eggs in the mornings!

We have had predator problems before, which is why we tried the coop. We would love to have a pond and a nice outdoor area to have them where they can be safe naturally, but we just are not there yet. However, it is encouraging to hear about your results :-) Thanks for watching!

Well, I suppose it may, or may not. If I had a concrete floor I would be spraying it out all the time. They poop quite frequently. If that is your plan, great. I am not sure why I would use bedding on a concrete floor. Some hay for nests perhaps, but not a fully bedded floor I don't think.

hmm i was just curious as this is my first time raising ducks. I have a concrete floor in my duck house though so Im not sure if that changes anything.

how often did you change the straw and how often the wood chips?

So howdid the wood chips work out? Did the ducks have any feet problems

I wonder what it is about ducks that trouble her? We have really enjoyed our Muscovy - they are quiet and while they do not run up to us for pets, they are very friendly. Our 2 year old loves to sit in the grass and have us toss feed at her, so all the ducks peck around and on her. It is really quite adorable.

We've been much happier with 'pine' wood chips than hay. The wood chips don't compress as easily and they absorb moisture much better. However, I do think the hay is much better for the worms since the hay doesn't absorb the moisture like the wood. I just read a comment below about possible lung problems. That's definitely a concern, I'd suggest checking out the toxicity of the type of saplings/branches your grinding.

David Dube Oh such a great idea. I'm going to try a mix of what we have on hand, including ground cocoa pods, large coconut palm leaves, hay, grass, etc. Our soil is really hard and we need something like this to get some nice soil for the gardens.

We are thinking of getting ducks. We live on a pond. How do you keep the ducks from leaving?

Wood chips are awesome! Have you thought about a Great Pyrenees for your predator problem? They are great protectors of almost any kind of flock.

my muscovy duck lay in winter and set there eggs and they hatch every single egg they lay. I don't like to mess with them. I even have 1 white pekin hen that will set her eggs as well and they usually won't lay in a nest they just lay were ever the urge hits them.

at $5 bucks a bag at tsc, that chipper will pay for its self pretty quick...plus u have all that for your compost bin when u clean it up...

Do your ducks live there? Like no free raznge?

The duck poo breaks it down pretty quickly - so yeah, that's what we do, flip it, "fluff" it, if you will, and add more.

We live in the city limits and a year ago we had to put some roosters down that had been shipped as pullets. I don't think she liked knowing it was done. Ducks would be meat birds more than eggs so I'm guessing that is why. Although she likes Duck eggs so maybe I can convince her.

I just got baby ducks. When do they get to go into water? Hugs

Feed them. That's not a smart aleck reply, I mean it. We have a game feeder - you know, like a deer feeder, with pellets in it (we use Purina Flock Raiser). It goes off every so often, and the ducks stick around. They are just like any other animal, if they know where to find easy food, they stay there.

Don't know about the wives tale. In Asia ducks eggs are part of the regular diet. That said certain breeds might be very sensitive to it so research on best laying ducks would be in order.

That is a great set up. LOL.

The good news is it is possible to build your own chicken coop even you're lack of woodworking skill

Not sure which duck is best for egg collecting. From what I understand they are not like chickens in that you can rely on when the eggs come. We have seen that - there is not a new egg every day or every other day. What is worse, the wives tale is if you take out even 1 egg, they stop laying. Since we want the meat, I have not bothered testing that :)

I can attest that they are finicky layers and seem seasonal. But when they do lay, its daily and big lovely eggs. I've started taking out only a few at a time and leave faux eggs in there all the time.

You keep saying hay. Do you mean straw, or are you using hay in your coop? Just curious as to how your getting so many worms! Great idea!

It is Bermuda Grass hay. We have it for the other animals and use it in here as a matter of convenience (as opposed to getting straw as well).

Have you thought of installing a pod with a reed bed filter system so you dont have to empty it every day? I made this one for next to nothing & it works great. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y4x70I-lZ7Gapps.html you may be able to use some of the ideas, but I would suggest making it bigger with the amount of ducks you have (I only have 2).
