Have We Built The Ultimate Duck Coop?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have We Built The Ultimate Duck Hutch
We were searching for the BEST duck coop for our ducks. However, I could not find the one that fit our regenerative permaculture methods. So I design a duck coop with a mixture of a few designs I found online. This will give the flexibility to be mobile. Predator proof as much as possible. Provides great functionality.

Love this design. We're finishing our "Good Enough Frickin' Chicken Coop 5000" that'll house most of our birds (chicken math is real). But the ducks...they're another story. I really think they need an mesh bottomed house because they are so darn messy and they don't mind the cold in the winter. I think something like this might actually work, if we can get them trained young enough. (and yes, my husband introduced me to your channel over the weekend so I'm kind of binging now...)

Haha thanks. I try to wear a funny shirt every now and then in our videos. There are pros and cons with both animals. I love the challenge ducks bring to the table. They are very skidish and take time to warm up to you. You have to bucket train them (just like any farm animals) to get a better handle on them. These Welsh Harlequin ducks are for egg production. We will be getting some meat ducks soon. Meat duck is just a much juicer meat, and you can save the duck fat for cooking. We will be using the ducks to be placed in the orchard from time to time since they are great forgers and less destructive as chickens. Hope that answers some of your questions. Thanks for stopping by to watch our video and subscribing.

Funny thing. We decided to not have the ducks in here anymore. It was too much of a hassle on moving the ramp, the fence, and the coop all together. We made some modifications on the coop. I am not sure where you are, but in Ohio I would not use the 1" x1 " wire on the floor for two reasons. The first would be that we have raccoons and they will stick their paw up through the holes in the flooring and grab the feet or neck of the ducks and pull parts thru to the outside and kill them. The second would be their feet freezing during our cold winters on the metal with out any bedding. It would be easy to clean with wire but not safe. My ducks will use the plastic nesting boxes with the plastic bar removed, and setting on the floor.

We are in Texas and NORMALLY don't get freezing temps. Besides the last two years 🤪 . But we have our first line of defense with poultry netting. The coop is the second line of defense. We were keeping bedding in there when we did get below freezing temps. We now use this coop as a chicken coop. It was getting more of a hassle moving the fence and the ramp. We now house our ducks in a John Suscovich tractor

Let them free range always through the fruit orchard. They wont scratch your high rooted berries, they love bugs and grass. And put there duck house in there to. Ducks are great for meat and eggs, although it is a lesson to teach people normally to swap from chicken to duck eggs. @andygrigsby3648 you are correct. Both will do well in the cold. Some chickens will do even better thsn some in the cold. It is the heat that you have to protect then from. During the cold winter months, you just need to keep the wind off of the chickens.
