BA Falcon - Gear Selector Linkage Failure

BA Falcon - Gear Selector Linkage Failure
In this video I remove interior to access the upper shifter linkage to find it had come off. However this turned out to be the symptom of another problem. It was hard to get in and out of park, which post filming research seems to indicate it it probably a parking pawl failure.

    I've had all these problems with a BA Falcon Wagon. The rotating linkage thingy at the gearbox and at the shift stick are essentially the same, a cheap plastic friction fitted ball & pin. Don't buy the cable kit to fix it. At the gearbox, drill a hole and insert a split pin or a small bolt. At the top end I use rubber bands to hug the linkage to the stick. Fuck'n Fords. I never had these problems with my Camira, or Datsun.

    You have to take the driver's seat out and disconnect the handbrake mounting point to do this job or else you will be pulling your hair out. On misfires get a load of this info. When these 4.0.litre engines misfire when cold then run ok when warm the problem can well be in the fuel rail. Yes, the fuel rail. After they have done a few kms they get gunked up in the end of the fuel rail and they will not idle properly especially when cold. You have to take it off and try and chip or clean it out or put a new one on. My 780,00km Fairmont had this problem but it runs perfect now. I started to look somewhere else after changing a multitude of plugs coils fuel filters testing electrics computer and listening to many so called wised up individuals and other ''experts' some of those Ford dealer 'mechs' I used to be a heavy vehicle mech and my approach has always been a process of elimination. If changing coil packs plugs again within 12 months does not fix it, then the problem is obviously elsewhere.

    Yep, the internal gear stick plastics are a pain. That shifter mod is good, but can be done tighter then needed. Park issue is from people putting into park when the vehicle is still moving even a small amount to rolling, some times fails open there is no indent safety P R

  • @tangles01

    @tangles01

    Yeah I never "roll" into park. Stop, Foot brake still on, and or handbrake then park, usually pause in N for a split second to de-laod before slotting it in, but either way, the pawl or the pin is worn or damaged somehow. I've scope drawings and pics of the park and see how it could bind up.

    I feel your pain, this happened not even 2 weeks ago for by BA 03. The bottom gear selector bush snapped and fell off the selector rod, $40 kit for both plastic pieces (top and bottom) from Repco. Thankfully the top bushing hasn't gone yet for me. Didn't happen for my first BA 03, but did for my 2nd, guess It's just an issue with age based on how brittle/yellow it was. The cold missfire could be an intake manifold leak, fixed that on my BA 03 last year, try spraying manifold cleaner around the intake manifold seals while it's running to find any intake gasket leaks. It'll run rough if it sucks any of the spray through a leak. If it's not that, could be the injectors dripping fuel overnight, had that issue with my previous BA 03. Fuel drips into the cylinder overnight causing it to run rough in the morning, shouldn't last that long through.

  • @tangles01

    Manifold leak is common isue on falcons "if you have rpm in neutral or park over 800rpm intake gasket is gone mostly on clynder number 1 and it can be done with 4 to 5 hours work easy".Fuel injectors should be cleaned too and it is very important to replace O rings,filters and plastic clip on front which is going in manifold for prevention of leakage if O rings is not replaced.Buy one CIGAROS and 1 metre hose conect on manifold where was brake buster conection.Close trotle body with plastic glowes and smoke cigaros and push smoke in hose.Smoke will come outh on manifold or any place where is vacum lekage is old trick from Scot Kilmer on youtube is cheper than make or buy smoke detector.

    Hi this is caused by load on the gear selector from the drive train and everybody knows how hard these cars are to get out park with the clunk noise, now there is a simple fix and this will 100% stop the cable bush at each end from breaking . Now you just have to get in the habit of doing this , whenever you stop anywhere put the car in neutral put the handbrake on take your foot off the brake turn the car off put the car in park now the next time you drive the car it will come out of park with absolutely no tension no clunk and no load on the plastic bush at each end of the cable and if you do this the bushes will never break, now this is not just a falcon territory problem loads of cars suffer from this same problem my daughters Holden Astra uses the exact same bushes as the Ba falcon ,so just get in the habit of pushing the gear shift 1 click forward and you will notice the car goes slightly forward not the wheels just the body and thats what causes the load on the cable bushes .

    That's already been modded it's supose to have a cup on the end of the selector cable but it appers someone has drilled it out n put a bolt straight through the cable cup to the selector n double nutted it, to replace the top plastic bush you have to remove the whole center console n it's a shit of a job I've done about 50 of em over the years, have fun there a bitch! To remove those bottom trim bolts easily you move the seats fully forward n you can acess them from the rear footwell, the bush up top needs to be replaced the bottom bush fails normally (very common) but your is modded so the next weakest link went the top bushing (they aren't very common), the bindinding is a worn lock paul in the box.
