B747-400 Fuel System logic

Onwards with the fuel system then. The B747-400 & 8 ‘Superjet, have fuel system management cards that control fuel valves and pumps in accordance to fuel system logic. In this video clip, I show you what happens after engine start and in this case, we have Centre Tank fuel loaded. Centre tank pumps are switched ONLY if we have more than 7700kgs of fuel in the tank for takeoff. If you look closely at the fuel synoptic, tanks number 2 & 3 are larger capacity than the outboard tanks 1 & 4. For wing bending moments, fuel system logic maintains the fuel weight in outboard wings for as long as possible during the flight. This means centre tank must be depleted first then tank 2 & 3 used up until they equal tank 1 and 4 at which point, fuel is configured for Tank to Engine feed( As in each tank will feed its own engine as fuel will be balanced). Anyway see what happens here😀✈️✈️✈️✈️

What does it mean to 'protect' tanks 1&4 for takeoff?

Can you explain the why behind this design feature?

The Main Tanks 1 and 4 are a lot smaller than the Main Tanks 2 and 3. So on takeoff you don't want to use them because it would use too much fuel. The CTR tank will be used always first.
