    I know that it is a common practice to use odds calculators and simulators when playing Axis and Allies 1942 Online (I do it too.) But, generally, when we played the board game we DO NOT ALLOW it. It's not so much because it is unfair (some people are aware of and use them, whereas others don't), but because it is SUPER ANNOYING when players break out laptops and phones and click away at them to input the unit counts while other people wait, then when the battle is over yelp about dice and luck vs the statistically expected outcome as computed by A&A Calc or whatever. We are there to have a good time with your buddies, not to be annoyed.

    Thanks for watching! I am thinking about a video that plays this basic plan turned up to 11 against a live opponent. I think I can prove that a German Naval purchase and attacking the UK first is a superior strategy to the standard attack Russia first strategy. Something to show your buddy. :)

  • @aardvarkpepper7660

    @aardvarkpepper7660

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@BoardGameNation A superior strategy against an unprepared opponent, sure. But against a prepared opponent? Is KUKF really a sound line of play? A few stipulations: 1) It's all right to stipulate preconditions - for example, you could say the KUKF is not to be used in case R1 captures Ukraine and leaves fighter(s) on Archangel. 2) It's all right to not take down UK; UK doesn't even need to be attacked - i.e. if the Allies do something that successfully defends against KUKF, but which leaves fatal weaknesses elsewhere that allow Axis to win, then KUKF is still good even if it's never used. 3) This one's a bit tricky. If the Allies have a reasonable odds opening that doesn't open up weaknesses elsewhere that changes the numbers on KUKF to unfavorable, I say that opening is the one that ought to be assumed. But if there's a counter to that opening, that counter needs to be shown. E.g. take R1 12 units to West Russia / 9 units to Ukraine. My impression the "meta" right now is all "u have to capture ukraine!" then they park fighters on Caucasus or something whatever, and it's *assumed* Germany doesn't hit West Russia. Er, that's kinda I dunno. I'd say if USSR captures Ukraine then USSR should put 1+ fighters at Archangel; if USSR does that then Allies do have a better answer to G2 Sealion as well as having a backup against the German Baltic transport depending on Germany's moves. But if you dig through Axis and Allies org boards for 1942 Second Edition (I know, 1942 Online has different rules but still), you'll see a post from Hobbes some years back, where he says Germany may leave the UK battleship alone and smash West Russia. I forget if he was talking LHTR setup or not, but regardless, if Hobbes thought there was something to it, I don't think it's safe to *assume* the NW Europe and Norway fighters go after the UK battleship. I've seen some players argue it never happens and shouldn't happen, but I've never seen anyone actually run the numbers to show Germany *must not* do just that. What I'm getting at is if you assume R1 parks 1+ fighters where they can reinforce London, then US1 builds 1 carriers 2 fighters, then you're looking at, well, you see where I'm headed. It's tough for Germany to try any sort of brute-force into London whether G2 or G3 or later. But if you can demonstrate that 12 units to W Russia / 9 units to Ukraine to capture is unsafe then it's "all right, there's an Allied response that's strong against KUKF but it's not a real response because it's likely to fall apart if the Axis do (this other thing that has nothing to do with UK), but it's for that reason that the Allies can't just do that counter in the first place, THEREFORE KUKF is valid" - mm, you see what I meant about "a bit tricky". Personally I think G1 Baltic carrier, if Allies mess up the response you get a superior position, if Allies don't mess up an inferior position (compared to, say, a Med carrier) though with careful play Axis can still do reasonably. G1 destroyer, though - mmf. I get that it frees up the cruiser, which in turn frees up a sub so you can go after US fleet, but I think it leaves Germany just a *little* soft in the Ukraine area on later turns, though I haven't played/gone through enough to say for sure how serious that'll usually end up. (If you have Atlantic control, then you'll have a lot more freedom in Europe for what Germany can get away with, so maybe you can drop G2 tanks and compensate though I'm not sure).

    Wow. You have a lot going on there. I appreciate your depth of thought. I will need to make a proper video to layout the entire strategy. I just picked up the online version through Steam, and I love it, especially since I can't play my old windows 98 version anymore. The AI is a crapshoot. Many times, it makes boneheaded moves, and sometimes it surprises you. Case and point. I joined an online match as UK with the other player controlling USA and USSR. The AI controlled the Axis. Germany pushed Egypt on their opening move and botched it. They also botched the attack on the combined UK fleet which left me with both the battleship and transport. So I was able to take Norway on turn one, followed by Finland than Karellia. Africa was a non issue, and I could play aggressively in India. But when I least expected it, they sent plenty of air power to sink my long surviving battleship, cruiser and transport just before I was going to launch a combined attack on Germany of which I needed more ground forces from UK and the 2 shore bombardments. Ended up going another round before victory because of it, since I missed it and could've launched my attack had I moved my fleet to where the American fleet was sitting.

My Mom and sister took London, My dad took USA and I took Russia. My two brothers took Germany and Japan. With my strategy and a lot of luck I took West Russia, Finland, and Ukraine in 2 turns in which turn 2 being Ukraine. So I told my teammates the best plan with them stocking up on transports and ground units. Plan was to let US and UK deal with Japan with little help of me and I hold off the Germans till Japan was felt with. In about 5 turns we had won. And just to be a little turd of me at the time me and USA attacked Japan main island and Berlin with the UK. My brothers were wrecked, didn’t know what to do at all. Fun times

    First, welcome back! You are absolutely right. There are a lot of options. A friend and I sat down and went through all of them in this video. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZ-Kx9WshNWwns4.html I suggest grabbing your drink of choice and watching that. From there, you might have a better idea of what would work best for you and your play group. For a quick start, I would recommend 1942 Second Edition. You should be able to find a tabletop copy pretty easily or you can play online through Steam or (soon) the iPad using Axis and Allies 1942 Online. If you need help with the rules, we have a ton of videos on the topic, including one that features the game's creator, Larry Harris! The Global game (Europe/Pacific together) is amazing, but is near the top of the complexity scale. Typically, I suggest folks work up to that, but it is totally up to you. Thanks for watching! Let me know if I can be of any further help. Happy hunting!

    Love all your stuff, and thinking about getting a newer version of the game! My friend and I are still playing the oldest version of A&A 1942 2nd Edition. You have been so helpful with rules that have been overlooked in the old version. I have a new question. My friend's name is Al by the way... So Al did an amphibious attack on Western Europe. The rulebook clearly states that once land forces are unloaded for the attack they cannot retreat back onto the transports. In this situation he brought fighters off a carrier and a bomber from the UK. Our question is, once all the attacking ground forces are dead, can Al withdraw the aircraft back to UK or Algeria? We play that a withdraw, everything has to go to an ajacent land zone. But, we couldn't find anything in the rules about withdrawing aircraft that was invoveled in an anphibious assault. Any advice as always is deeply appreciated! Cheers!

  • @BoardGameNation

    @BoardGameNation

    Thanks for watching! Glad you have found it helpful. That is a good question that the rulebook book doesn't explain very clearly. I made an attempt to cover these issue with lots of examples in our full how to video for 1942 Second Edition. Here is that link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/e3-tucN8YNnYpLA.html As for your question, attacking air units and land units not part of an amphibious assault can retreat at the end of any completed round of combat. As you mentioned, land units being offloaded into battle are "do or die." For example, you are attacking France with land units from the UK via transports, air units from wherever, and land units from North West Europe. The first round of combat goes so badly that you want to retreat. Once you declare a retreat from the battle, the surviving land units that came from NWE go back there and the air units can be removed from combat (air units will move and land during non-combat based on remaining movement capabilities), but any surviving units that were offloaded from transports will have to stay in the fight for as many rounds of combat as necessary to either win or be destroyed. A quick strategy tip: when you are attacking with both land troops that are coming by land and by sea, always take the hits on the units coming by sea first. This will give you more options if you have to retreat. I hope this helps clear it up. Let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks again for watching!

    I just attempted this strategy against a human and successfully won a standard victory .he did not know exactly what I was planning. but he did see something coming. he put some infantry on Britain used his Egyptian Force to reinforce India. he also retook bermeo which prevented my Japanese bombers from being able to join the assault. I still took India with everything I could throw at it. He was also prepping for Normandy by abandoning the Pacific and sending the Pacfic Fleet to the Atlantic overall the tactic is viable against humid players. however it would be hard for me to successfully do that a second time. I no longer have the element of surprise if I tempted it in our next game I think he would have counter it differently now that the element of surprise is gone

    Setting up a G2 sealion attack is something that only works against inexperienced opponents. If you want to make a german navy video I'd recommend italy carrier G1 instead. Its also rare but has had some success with Omar Omar clinching Axis #1 with it in season 3.

    Thanks for watching! I agree a G2 Sea Lion was only possible here because of some really weak play from the AI. My hope was to show newer players a few strategic points and a few "what not to do" moments. I don't have a ton of experience with the G1 Med Carrier purchase in 1942.2. I have tried it a few times and I don't love it. It feels like it spends too much time and resources fighting over Africa. Plus, by the time Germany is ready to move out to the Atlantic with the fleet, the Americans and British have had more than enough time to build up a fleet that can easily handle it. I would be interested to see some material about this southern carrier. Do you have any links you can share? Thanks again for watching!

    @@BoardGameNation I dont think there are any guides discussing this specific strat in detail. The basic summary as I understand it is this: G1 you kill the UK destroyer with 2 fighters and land on the carrier and transport to libya. The main idea is to get an Egypt stack G2 then go sudan and gain extra income. Then assuming KGF the boats will always be outside egypt or cauc giving you value from either extra income or logistical efficiency(shipping from italy to trade ukr saves multiple turns of travel time). The main downside is allies have a consistent punish by sending US boats into the med US4(when the US battleship arrives), either killing the G navy or forcing them to flee through the suez and sit uselessly outside india the rest of the game. If allies dont go for this line however the carrier pays for itself and G gains value.

  • @BoardGameNation

    That is an interesting analysis. I would have to work it out a few times to see what kind of value Germany can get from the carrier in Africa and in Caucasus... and how quickly. Do you buy a carrier and a 2nd transport or just the carrier?

    @@BoardGameNation Just to be clear, I dont usually do this strategy since I dont like its prospects against a top 10 allied opponent. @@konstan65 - I get that. I guess I am wondering what victory cities does it increase Germany's chance of taking. It helps take Egypt for certain and maybe Caucasus, but does it help with Moscow or Calcutta or than other approaches might? I guess I see the G1 carrier purchase (in the Med or Baltic) as the first step in attacking the UK and/or N. America. If that were my plan in the Med, my buy would an AC, DD, and TR. Best case ending position: land a guy on Gibraltar, the Bomber in Morocco. G2, I try to push it all out into SZ 13 and threaten half the board with it. Two FTR, 2 DD, a BB, and 2 full TR within range of just about everything that is touching the Atlantic. Unless the US made a big naval purchase on USA 1, they are going to have a hard time sinking it right away. I don't think this is enough to take London or anything serious in the US, but this makes it much harder for the US and UK to help the Russians moving forward. Maybe there is a video here. :)

We are breaking down the strategies for Axis and Allies in shorter videos (10 -15 minutes). Our first session will be a look literally from the top down. Too many folks jump right into the where to move units without considering a larger strategy. In this opening piece, instead of talking about what to move and where, we are going to talk about WHY to move a unit. The basic concepts for all Axis and Allies strategies. In part two, we will help players learn how to build a strategy of their own. The hope is to help people build winning strategies that will fit their play styles and opponents. Plus, we are experimenting with splicing in movie quotes for emphasis, variety, and some humor. It should be a fun series. The Russians did take Manchuria which is the only time I have seen this in the last 8 games I've played this week (thanks for getting me back into this by the way). All America did was put Rommel and Panzerarmee Afrika into camps in Omaha (safer for him actually). Game over at end of turn 2. How do you make your transport move into sea zone 13 and then announce an amphibious assault on Gibraltar? That's three moves not two. The game won't let me do that.

  • @BoardGameNation

    @BoardGameNation

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching! Moving the German transport from SZ 15 to SZ 13 is two moves (15 to 14 and 14 to 13). The Germans can load troops while in 15 and/or 14 and begin an amphibious assault on Gibraltar from SZ 13. One thing to remember, at the start of the game, there is a UK Cruiser in SZ 13, making it a hostel sea zone. When playing online, you have to send in some kind of combat unit into the zone BEFORE you will be able to send a transport. In this case, I sent the Battleship and the fighter. This created the possibility/probability that the sea zone could become friendly and the amphibious assault could proceed. The possibility of success is all that is all that is required for the system to allow you to start an amphibious assault. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks again for watching!

  • @ABCarmand

    @ABCarmand

    @@BoardGameNation Thanks Garry. I realize what I was missing. The first time around, I loaded the transport then clicked and dragged it on to Gibraltar. This resulted in my transport offloading in SZ 14. I then restarted the game and clicked and dragged the loaded transport onto SZ 13 instead of Gibraltar. Once I did that, the game gave me a blinking exclamation mark and wouldn't let me click and drag anything onto Gibraltar. Or so I thought. Not understanding the game well, I assumed that it must take a third move to offload or something hence my comment. But now I've learned two things: 1) The information/control panel thing in the bottom middle of the screen shows you the remaining moves of a unit as well as other useful information. 2) (and this was the real key) There are times when the game won't let you click and drag units from the map directly (which is what I've been doing since I started learning this game), but WILL let you click and drag those same units from that panel. So basically, I was able to load the transport and move it to SZ 13 by clicking and dragging from the map itself, but I could ONLY announce the amphibious assault by clicking and dragging from the control panel thing. What a dumb little input related thing to get hung up on that you wouldn't have had an issue with on a real board lol. Anyway, your content and comments are so perfect I can't really think of how they could be better. I'm going to be watching the rest of your strategy related content now since I've already gone through the how to play and explanation videos though I will be revisiting those now and then.

    Using aa toolkit's "Take Unit Last" feature can result in calculation errors as of a few months ago; haven't used it since then so I don't know if that's changed. David Skelly's Axis and Allies calculator was updated so it can assign AA guns as casualties per 1942 Second Edition rules. Kill UK First offers similar if not better chances to Kill USSR First - against competent human players? Nice editing and production values on the video (as usual). AI USSR doesn't actually go all-in on West Russia, it holds back an infantry (which is bad). Last I knew, AI didn't care about preserving the USSR tanks at Ukraine, it just attacks for one round then retreats regardless of outcomes; I think the AI follows a not-great script. Other oofs by AI: stacking Buryatia which even with the UK fighter can get smashed by Japan, West Russia vulnerable to German counter, and considering the state of Ukraine/Caucasus I can see why USSR defended, but a USSR fighter at Archangel is something that should be considered (picks off Baltic transport if undefended before Germany's second turn and/or flies to London in case of Sealion.)

    The UK on UK1 should have bought infantry and attacked the battleship/transport in SZ13 by Morocco. Place infantry in India and the UK. Now Germany has 1 transport, which isn't a threat to the UK. Then US1 the US should get a destroyer, carrier, 2 infantry, and 2 transports and stay in SZ11 because there would be a cruiser/sub still in SZ7. R2 the Russians should stack up West Russia and take Belorussia, Karelia, and Ukraine lightly. If Germany wanted to continue to try to take the UK they would have to build more navy G2, including more transports, which would be really expensive. By round 3 the US and UK could combine fleets and then destroy the German navy while Russia would be pushing into Ukraine and Germany would be in a bad spot.

  • @BoardGameNation

    @BoardGameNation

    Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I agree with about 85% of that. If the UK only puts 3 Infantry into India, do you think they will be able to stand up to full Japanese attack? Remember, Germany ended G1 with 60 IPC. What happens if Germany buys 7 transports and another Destroyer on G2? Can the UK stand up to 16 land units and all the airpower on G3? Especially considering that the UK put some infantry in India... This is likely a preview of my next strategy video. :)

  • @eb44345

    @eb44345

    @@BoardGameNation I didn't think about that with the IPCs saved. It's a very unusual strategy. As for India, yeah they should be fine. Africa units can make it to India by round 3 and the Russians can help out holding India. I often make sure the Russian tanks are in Caucuses R2 and if needed drop an infantry or 2 to Persia R2. After J1 you can figure out how many Japan can bring to India J3 (except J2 bombers) and block it. I've seen a lot of games where Japan is bottled up in Burma for a few rounds before they have enough to take India. When they do that, it gives Russia a lot of breathing room. That all out attack on the UK itself is interesting. I've only once had the UK fall when I was Allies, and that's when I wasn't paying attention.

  • @eb44345

    I think also 2 US fighters could land in the UK on US2 from the carrier. With 7 infantry UK1 and 8 infantry UK2 plus the US planes and starting UK units along with the Canadian tank, that's about 25 units, which would be hard for Germany to take including 4 fighters in there. Probably the strongest Sea Lion strategy I've seen is just buying a bunch of transports in SZ5 G1 and then even with a max defense it's still around 25% or so on the UK G2.
