Perhaps you already covered this in another video, but what are some tricks for remembering the strengths/weaknesses of mixed combat formats? Losing British transports early on can be devastating, and although I recognize it as a valid strategy, for new players it can be hard to remember what ships (at what price) constitute a secure escort. I haven't had a chance to look at your hour+ video yet (game starts in less than an hour), but for a new player this REALLY helped highlight some of the fatal flaws in my former strategy (including drawing attention to India early on, which allies really shouldn't do with a blunt blade methinks!)

I won with the allies today. I used my Britain forces in India to push Japan back to the coast. Then I purchased a factory and placed it in China with the Americans. This allowed me to focus on western Europe, and bought me enough time to build Russias infantry numbers to hold off Japan. I lost the factory in China twice but regained it with Russia to prevent Japan from ever building there.

When i was younger i played the original game with my friends, alot. One time while playing Russia, I decided to attack on the first turn. Something that had never been done. It worked amazingly. It put Germany on the back foot quickly. Making them buy infantry in their first turn was cool.

Can't thank you enough for all your help! I love to watch your videos! The version we play is Axis & Allies Spring of 1942 (The World at War) and we've been playing this since 1988! Our box has Rommel on the cover. I guess it's the first edition, but the rulebook has 2nd edition updates on page 3. There are no P-38s in our game! :) I wonder if I can find an actual 2nd edition?!?!? I'm going to look, wish me luck! Thanks again!

Looking forward to your strategy/comments video on Japan. For example, build a IC on French Indochina or on Manchuria (or neither)? I lean towards Manchuria because putting one on French Indochina is wasteful once you take India. On the other hand, put some transports in the Sea of Japan, and the need for an IC in Manchuria is unnecessary. Like I say, looking forward to hearing your opinions in future videos.

Btw, a quick note on the Japanese IC, typicially I don't recommend building one anywhere until you have more money than you can spend building 8 units per turn in Japan. Thanks again for watching!

I watched this video at the start of this month and it really improved my game. Not to jinx it, I have been on a winning streak. This season, I have been experimenting with tactics. When I lose, I lose big because Russia will have no army by round 3 and the Germans are banging down the door. I used the 9 & 12 strategy. However, I commit to victory in Ukraine. Now, I just strafe it and I'm in stronger position. Why I didn't think of it before. Thanks!

Hello, I just recently started watching your videos and I love them. I've been playing A&A with my friends for a while now and so everyone is getting very skilled. One of my friends only plays Japan and he is terrifyingly effective. Alas, I did come with a question. Do you think you could take a look at Italy from the anniversary edition? I love this nation and I think they are greatly underrated and frankly gets made fun of a lot. I'd love to see what you think about them and if you come up with a new strat that I didn't think of. Another factor is simply 2 v 3 split. Since multinational units can't work together on offense, having fewer powers is better. (If USA and USSR were 1 power it'd be gg quick.)

When I played years ago with my brothers if Russia fell within 3 or 4 turns the axis usually won but if Russia can survive until turn 4 or 5 the allies usually won.

That can be a really good indicator. However, depending on what is happening in other parts of the map, the fall of Moscow isn't always the end for the Allies. Thanks for watching!

I just spent my birthday playing Axis and Allies and it was an interesting story turns out the copy of Axis and allies my friend had .Was missing all of the pieces of the game , because his dad took it just the pieces left the box and board. My friend found a copy of axis and Allies the original Edition at a game store here in Florida . this was the first time I ever played the original axis and allies and there were a lot of differences I didn't realize that Destoryes and artillery were added in future Editions, and the map had less territories. Overall I lost Russia, Africa had changed hands multiple times. Germany took it from Britain, America took it from Germany then Japan took it from America. Around the time Japan took Africa, Russia had fallen, and I had sneaked an American Fleet into Tokyo, and took Japan . We called it a draw. Because it was getting late a combination of the remaining Japanese Fleet which was Massive !!and the German Fleet right behind it ,had sunk the American Atlantic Fleet and Was preparing to assault America .but I had sufficient time to build my forces in Washington DC. and because America still had Japan. I had started taking the mainland back . Germany was then pushing America off the mainland we were going to get stuck in a deadlock. for another ,4 hours and they needed the kitchen table for dinner. Overall I had a really great day, and the first edition copy my friend bought. So we could play he gave it to me as a birthday gift .

@@BoardGameNation I was trying to understand what this means: "They were used as escort and protection ship. They should be AntiSubWeap and 10 IPCs. A1D1M2 Or A1D2M2 12 IPCs Under 1942. So the only fighter can do patrol mission against Sub. And it would make more sense to match them with Fleet Carrier for protecting them."

Time is against the AXIS, of course. There's actually a strategy I read about that wins more often than not: completely ignore Japan and throw everything at Germany, this usually wins. - but I am always the Axis, anyways ;)

Thanks for watching! What you are describing is called a "Kill Germany First" strategy and can be highly effective if done correctly. Like all Allied strategies, it takes solid coordination between the three powers to overcome the material advantage the Germans start with. Thanks again for watching! @@BoardGameNation Thank you! Subscribed ;) If Japan plays really aggressively, taking India, eastern Asia and moving up the Suez canal to link up with Germany, I find the Axis can potentially offset the 'Germany First' strategy - I've been successful a few times with a good Japanese teammate!

In the Axis and Allies classic, Karelia SSR is the key to victory. If it falls to the Axis without being liberated by the Allies next turn the game is a Axis win.

@@tistelnilsson I imagine a lot of them are like that. In 1942 version there is only one way the ussr can survive against Germany. If a German player knows what they are doing they can easily beat the soviets in 2 turns.

Agreed. Whoever is playing the Soviet Union has to reinforce that territory by the end of their first turn. If I'm the SU, I'm buying nothing but men and stacking them up against Germany.

@@WobblinGoblin1 nah you cannot play defensive as the Soviet Union if the German player knows what it’s doing, Germany can bring almost all of its armies against the USSR within 2 turns, if the Soviet Union doesn’t begin the game with a huge offensive they stand no chance of victory. If you haven’t exhausted almost every single unit you have as the USSR by the end of yo it first turn then you are playing wrong.

I also find axis stronger. The best tactic for the allies in my opinion is for US to deside, Japan OR germany full on assult. And the best of them is in my opinion is uniting US and brittan fleet against germany. Us provide naval support against german air force and britten build transport and ship 8-10 units every turn. This gives russia the breathing room it needs and makes the imense japanese fleet less usefull. Although you should use the exsisting american fleet to annoy the japanese as long as possible but never present a trade. Just make sure the japanese can’t leave transports and island undefended to provide india a slight support.

​@@BoardGameNation Thanks for commenting! I have played countless of games. I would guess above 100. Most of them 1942 second edition. But a fair amount of first edition and Global. In among them I've executed strategies to crush japan and I've played japan and been crushed. So it's always nice to know it IS possible. There is lots of openings and none of them is wrong. A tiny bit of luck can always change the tactic you have to go with. There is a specific opening when German doesn't take egypt and you can assult part of a japanese navy with one extra fighter from egypt and the starting fleet in India. Then follow that up with US pressuring japan from the north at the same time with the goal of combining the two fleets. The real goal though is always how to prevent Russia main capital from falling. And there is a fun strategy to fly lots of brittish fighters to land on russian soil to help bunker while US and brittan defeat Japan meanwhile. First video to see. I think I will subscribe to see what more you post. My board game fingers are itching after this long corona time!

I genuinely don't know how to get value out of USA in this game. It just takes so long to get them into the fight in some way. Should I just focus on capturing the pacific and stopping Japan from owning any navy?

There are a lot of different ways to play the US in all the A&A games. It comes down to play style and the overall Allied plans for victory. The US can spend everything in the Pacific and try to stop the Japanese from running wild or they can try to support a European invasion. They typically can't do both. If the US can focus all of their attention on one target, when they show up... it is usually game over. I hope that helps! Good hunting!

As far I as I can tell, they can. Nothing in the optional rules for technology rolls says they can't and nothing in the political situation talks about it. The rules only specifies that China can't ever do R&D. I am pretty confident that you are good, but I am not an expert in the G40 rules. @@BoardGameNation thanks, side note: I've offered various types of house rules .... play tested them , they don't seem to be worth the effort... Marines, SS, passing through blocked sea zones etc . no good ..the only ones that work well are building on bases, one inf or one unit that is compatible with said base ... and usa not able to enter war until attacked or allied capital is captured... and until at war , being able to purchase bases for allies and purchasing units and transferring them to allies . You have got some fun ideas in there. I recommend checking out the last four pages or so of the rulebook for the 2004 Revised Edition. Working on the next video right now. It is a full history of the A&A franchise. Game by game. A buddy came over with all of his various versions. We had a few beers and talked about every version in order. A bit of different style for this channel, but it was fun. Lots to edit though! :)

Thanks for watching! Yes! I am a fan of using the UK Navy to attack SZ 61 with the AC and CR (take out the DD and TR), attack Borneo with 2 INF, and New Guinea with 2 INF and a CR. The attack on Borneo and New Guinea both have a 75% chance of success. Plus, Japan has to divert precious transports and land units to take them back. Sometimes they don't even bother - which makes for a great place to land Americans, if the need arises. Is this how you do it?

I haven't seen a successful strategy that builds UK naval units in India before turn 5 or 6. I'll have to give that some thought. Thanks again for watching and I hope you have had a chance to subscribe!

In most games ,when I play as the allies if I lose moscow then either I lose , if I'm playing total victory then I get stuck in a stalemate situation trying to prevent a sea lion landing on Britain while at the same time I usually end up taking Japan and start funnelling American troops to liberate Moscow with America and Britain I fill up the Air Force on the island and sink the German Navy turn after turn after turn. At the same time I'm building troops to invade Japan . The problem iveseenwith this delaying tactic is, if the Air Force takes too much casualties sinking the Navy. Then I can't repel. Yes, the other country is likely to run a bit wild, but if you take Berlin or Tokyo is it nearly impossible for the Axis to recover. @@BoardGameNation I agree a resent game, I played I delayed Japan by holding india and funneling troops to kick them off the mainland. While American keep the Japanese fleet sunk and contained with submarines . I Timed my Normandy invasion just right Russia severely weakened Germany while at the same time I landed America on Normandy and then I used America to take Germany. I used the IPC to build my Pacific transport Fleet and took Japan 2 turns later Something I see your channel possibly benefiting from in the future is a Discord Channel I find it difficult to set up matches with other human players regardless if they're playing tabletopor the computer version a discord Channel might be beneficial in order to help people get together

My friend and I are on our 41st hour and 23rd full turn of our game in the 41 edition with some modified rules. Our wives ask us: "Who is winning?" Whoevers turn it is is always the answer.

Wow! That is certainly the longest game of that version I have ever heard of. What rules changes did you make?

The larry harris version played in 1942 online is considered to be slightly allied favored, with stats to back it up. Last 2 tournaments with a game count of over 200 the allies had a 55% winrate. I'm guessing the boardgame being axis favored has something to do with the 8 VC victory condition and 6 turn time limit the over-the-board games had.

Thanks for watching and for being a subscriber! I appreciate that really interesting data. I am not surprised, but it is interesting. I would be curious how you got that information. Is it available online somewhere? In this video I was trying to illustrate that the Axis need to move quickly or the Allies will overwhelm them with their economic strength. To that end, I would be curious to know what the win percentage in AA Online is for games that ended in less than 6 rounds. I would wager that that would show a heavy lean to the Axis, while longer game would statically favor the Allies. I wonder if our friends at Beamdog would be willing to share that data. @@BoardGameNation Beamdog shared som data right after the games release. At that point it was axis who had a 55% winrate at the highest level. Its interesting that its shifted towards allies as time goes by. The tourney stats was collected on the community discord server so I think you'll find them there.

Seems impossible to win as Allies. I think I might be 95% win as axes and 5% win as allies calculated over 100+ games played. Germany seems impossible to hold as russian and really hard to help in any way with UK or US before Russia is completly wiped out in 3 or 4 turns :( (Playing 3.0 version)

That's interesting. Most people feel that even with the 3.0 setup, the game only slightly favors the Axis. 55/45 is the general consensus. Allied strategies can be tricky, but we are nearly finished with a video that focuses on Russian openings that might help. Keep an eye out for that. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for watching! In the 1942.2 version, having the Americans focus on Germany entirely is one popular strategy, but I have seen (and lost to) killer strategies that focused 100% on Japan. If you are referring to the classic version, I agree having the Allies focus everything on getting to Berlin is the best strategy. Thanks again for watching!

It's funny the Soviets are given much less material than Japan. I they why for balance reasons but it still feels very ahistorical.

I love the information you’re putting out, but there’s way too much fluff. Nearly every video has almost 1 min of intro and shilling, then adding all the little cutaways to unrelated video clips (which themselves are also too long).

Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback. We were experimenting with adding movie clips. I agree a couple were a bit too long, but I think they keep it fresh. Rather than just listening to my voice, breaking up the video with short clips helps keep the viewer engaged. It does take a lot of work to find, edit, and insert video clips that are just right. As a result, we haven't used this technique since. About the "schilling", we are still actively growing the channel, but we have shortened that section in our newer videos. Thanks again for watching! Don't lose German aircraft and don't do pearl harbor and you can win with the axis every time. Allied USA buying nothing but planes work well and can become a giant problem.

@@sparkmagea99 I know what you mean. One of the most important metrics for any YT channel is "watch time"; once they click, how long do they stay on the video. I have to say, this video has the best "watch time" of any of our videos, even more than the rules videos. It is just a really popular format, but I know not everyone likes it. Unfortunately for you, our next video is likely to be in this style, but here is a little tip that might help. None of the clips in our videos are usually more than a few seconds long. So, if you are watching on a computer, you can click the "arrow right" key and jump ahead and skip the clip. On a phone, you should be able to double tap the right side of the screen to do the same thing. I hope this helps. I really do appreciate the feedback and (don't tell anyone), but I kind of agree with you. Thanks for watching!

That is true. The math I used doesn't account for any material or territorial changes. I assumed that the losses would be of roughly the same IPC value and that territories would be traded at a roughly equal amount. Of course, every game is going to be different, but I was trying to demonstrate that all things being equal, the Axis material advantage is shorter lived than most players would expect. I have the original 1984 game, here is a devastating move Germany can make on its first turn. Attack the UK Capital. 1st, spend all Ipc's on infantry. You will need to eliminate the UK fleet, use EVERY vessel Germany has, even transports, let them take the hits first to save your subs and battleship use all vessels that have range to fight. So you have now eliminated the UK's fleet, now fly EVERY fighter to the UK Capital to fight, even those that will automatically crash due to movements use to get there, use them to take hits first, be specific about which fighter came from where to lose those who ran out of flying moves. How do you take the UK's Capital ? Use the bomber and transport 2 infantry men. The 2 men will be the last to be killed, you MUST save atleast one to take the Capital at the end of battle. With A.A. gun shots, and losing higher dollar pieces, you will take the Capital, get the IPC dollars and raise Germany to a much higher Industrial Point range. Then place your newly purchased infantry men on industrial complexes nearest to Russia, that will protect Germany til the next round. I have tried this many times, honestly Germany has a 60% chance of taking the UK and a much lower chance of keeping it ( the USA can come liberate the UK on its 1st turn ) BUT, by doing this Germany jumps in ipc's, puts the UK in the toilet, forces Russia to move towards Germany making it easier for Japan to take a few territories from Russia on Japan's 1st move, and forcing the USA to get involved immediately in Europe, spending some ipc's in eastern US, giving Japan an edge in the Pacific. It's a bold move, but will terrify the Allies if Germany takes the UK Capital on turn one. btw, I have had my 1984 game for 38 years, playing against my brother, we would go 7-8 hours, log our positions, come back and put in another 6-8 hours before either of us would win. Just thought I would add that so you know I'm no rookie
