EXACTLY! i find when people hate a character’s choice it’s because they’re stuck seeing in only black and white. while yes, aang shouldn’t have hidden the letter, his choice makes sense from his perspective. a young child with the fate of the world on his shoulders, growing into himself as a person, learning his people whom he saw a few days ago actually were all killed 100 years ago, living in a world that developed while he was gone. he’s going through so much in such a short amount of time and it’s amazing what the mind will do to convince you that this choice will save you from more pain and abandonment. and with that, sokka and katara’s reactions also made sense. a parent they haven’t seen in YEARS was so close and their new close family kept it from them? of course they’d feel betrayed. it’s never b&w and trying to get others to see that is always so exhausting 😅

@@FirstLast-yh7gj Just a few week earlier he discovered that nearly every friend and loved one he ever had is dead and his entire culture was genocided. It's pretty understandable that he's a bit clingy to what few friends he currently has lol. And as the original comment says, it was only about half a day that he kept it secret and he came forth on his own. Katara and Sokka left their home for him in episode 2 but this is enough for them to want to abandon him?

This is honestly a very important episode for Sokka specifically. Much of his development is very subtle here. We of course have him showing off his leadership abilities and problem solving, but my favorite thing about this episode, is that this is where Sokka, according to his father's definition, finally becomes a man. Ice dodging is seen as a right of passage for young water tribesmen, after doing that, Sokka reflected back onto when his father told him "Being a man is knowing where you are needed the most." Sokka became a full fledged MAN when he decided to turn around and help Aang, as that is where he and Katara were needed the most.

I have never thought about it this way, but you're right. This rite of passage is a big deal to their tribe and it also symbolizes his growth. I always focused on Aang in this episode.

I will never understand people thinking this is like out of character or something. He's literally a 12 year old in a strange world, everyone he knows is dead, no friends, no family. Sokka and Katara are pretty much all he has in the entire world, while it's obviously wrong, I think it is completely understandable that a 12 year old in his position would do something like that.

Aang is sagely, moralistic, and wise, because of course he is, he’s α monk. But there’s only so much maturity one can expect from α 12-year-old kid, especially one who lost everyone and everything he knew and cared for overnight. People tend to give Aang α lot of flak for the mistakes he makes and lies he tells throughout the show, but he’s α traumatized grade-schooler. Of course he can’t be expected to be reasonable in the same way an adult can, especially when his only remaining support network is involved.

Regarding Iroh, he's powerful, but he also understands this is Zuko's quest and he wants him to have his own teachings and failures along the way. He's more of a coach and mentor to Zuko than a straight up teacher or ally. He's being the kid's fatherfigure and letting him fight his own battles.

He was 12 and his people had been completed wiped out as a result of genocide. It wasn't right to lie and it does feel slightly out of character but avatar or not, it was a very human and relatable thing to do - even if it was wrong. He owned up to it and was willing to face the consequences, I think that says more about his character than the mistake itself.

The one thing that I feel that a lot of people kinda get wrong about this episode was that, I don't think Aang was jealous, I think he was scared. From the beginning when Bato got there he was trying to learn more about them, he wanteed to be engrained, be a part of their lives, he wasn't trying to get them away from Bato, it was only after they kept disregarding him and shrugging him off that he did what he did, he wanted to hear stories, he wanted to know more about their father. Because at this point Aang feels that Katara and Sokka are his family. Thats why he fessd up when he did, because he got that acceptance and he wanted to come into it with a clear concious. He is a 12 year old kid whos whole life basically is gone now,. Also, one thing that I got from this episode, and maybe I misread the vibe, but, I don't think Katara was angry, she was dissapointed, and there is a difference, especially when she lingered slightly before going with Sokka. Personally, I think she had already forgiven Aang. She understand what he went through, she was the one that told him, that they were his family now. But, she found herself in a similar situation to episode 1. Sokka was angry, Sokka was her brother, that's why when Sokka said "We need to go back" She smiled. it was permission, Sokka had realized the same thing she had, and now, since her older brother was on board, she couild go back and keep her family. Yes, they want to see thier dad, but when Sokka looked past his anger and realized that they couldn't abandon ANY part of their family, they were both in agreement, Aang was too important to their hearts to really leave behind.

Ironically, out of all of the “bad things“ Aang does in the show the only one I hear having a unanimous agreement on is Aang lying in “the great divide” Everything else I could easily see being very understandable, for why he makes it seems that he does. It may not be the correct decision, but it makes sense.

Even in the Great Divide, I agreed with him. Those clans went through hell n back n they were still wanting to go back to hating. The fact that a 12 year old boy's lie (granted he's the avatar but still) could make them change their minds that easily goes to show how nonsensical their beef was in the first place

  • @Nazo-kage

@@syrusangi8743 the problem is that since it’s based off of a lie. The truth could easily shatter. Also, it’s trivializing 100 year feud, which probably had a lot of deaths behind it. Its a huge compliment to the writers for making a situation this real. But I will watch this episode everytime I can just for that fight scene at the end. The choreography of Aang Vs Zuko is so good. Like when you notice Aang did the same sweeping attack Zuko did on the roof tops, because he isn't used to taking offensive strikes with air bending and the tip toeing around the well. He throws Aang into insane unconventional trials, still actively holds a high position of power, and places his professional/national duties first.

His age aside and while I do understand why Aang did what he did in this episode, I don’t think it’s that out of character for him, as much as we do like Aang, let’s be honest here, he can be more than a little selfish and self centred when he wants to be, he used Sokka’s food as kindling for a fire, spent money on a whistle without informing the group, complains about walking and looks down on people for eating meat, none of this has to really do with his age or his culture, their just flaws to his character.

I just realized: Why would the beast lead them to that herbist old lady? They were tracking Katara’s necklace and she never went there. All these years and I just thought of that lol

A 12 years old kid trying to keep the only friends he cares about around after his whole nation and culture got wiped out isn't really out of character, I'd say. Everyone makes mistakes in this show, and that's part of what makes the characters so good.

June was probably the only character I really had a crush on in this show; well crush on technicality as I was about 3-4 when I saw this...😅😂😂😂😂

I found katara character to be off this ep, sure she would be upset but seriously would she have been ready to immediately leave aang alone and it's not like he had it for that long either,

@@SortaStupid Oh nice you’re gonna love the season 3 cause it’s definitely the best one. Also I can say about sequel legend of Korra without spoiling that hero team is better in The last airbender but villain team is much better in the Legend of Korra. Can’t wait to see you guys see Korra next! Thank you for answering have a good day ☺️

This is my least favorite episode but the action is *still* memorable. People who have seen the entire show underrate season one's fight scenes but that well choreography is *tight*.
