Book 1: water takes place in winter. Book 2: earth is during the spring, and book 3: fire takes place during the summer. A season is a literal season.

It's times like these when I feel so proud of my 12-year-old self. Back then even I was able to calculate based on the fact that the winter solstice just happened how many months book 1 was, and what seasons each book fell in.

The last two episode's titles are "winter solstice", so we can safely say they're in the middle of winter right now. The comet returns by the end of summer, which means Aang has around 7-8 months left to master all the elements

It's specifically the end of December right now. The winter solstice occurs on the 21st of December, meaning that they have about 8 months.

Wanna know something really funny? If you’ve ever heard of the Backyardigans, the kid who voices Aang actually voices Pablo the penguin, which is extremely funny when you realize that one of the first things Aang said in the show was “will you go penguin sledding with me?”

Zuko still has his ship, what he lost here was his smaller boat stored inside to go up rivers.

Thing to understand. Aang is already a master airbender, that's what the tattoo means. So learning a new element is like picking up a new weapon, he is going to get the basics quick. Also he is the Avatar so he is naturally more powerful.

You're right on some level, but it's also the fact that water is air's complimentary element. Like if you can learn one you can pick up the other and vice versa

@@waterdragon55 It's both actually, Airbenders become masters and earn their tattoos once they master all 36 levels of airbending techniques, Aang had mastered 35 by the age of 12 which already made him a prodigy but also invented the air scooter, which is why he earned the title of Master and his arrows by consequence without mastering all 36 tiers. You either master all 36, or create an entirely new technique or airbending, Aang did the latter while also being close to the former.

Aang is the Avatar but it doesn't mean that he has an easier time mastering the elements. It only means that he can learn all of them. Aang is just a natural when it comes to waterbending.

I've studied a few martial arts. There can be a lot of similarities between different styles. And, of course, lots of differences. Aang is already a master bender, so learning different movements for water is easy for him.

Also, Air and Water are on the same wavelength of learning because they deal with light wavey motions. Just in case: Spoiler! In Book 2, he can't master the other 2 elements because it's his opposite, dealing with heavier up close attacks that need a firm stance. So that's fun to see he's only a natural at Waterbending because he's already used to flowing movement.

@@bluewolf6323 spoiler too: I remember Roku saying that he struggled with water since it's his opposite just like in aang's case so it's pretty cool each avatar struggled with something.

I love this episode for a very underappreciated reason. It's one of the very few episodes where we actually get to see Zuko laugh. Hell, I think it might be the ONLY episode where we get to see Zuko laugh.

WARNING: don't read the ✨replies✨ to this comment cause there are spoilers it makes sense that aang would have an easier time with water bending compared to katara. Not cause hes the avatar but because hes already mastered airbending and the movements for waterbending is very similar. (not identical, but similar). Katara on the other hand is 100% self taught and didn't even have time to really master it cause of other responsibilities. I love Katara as a character most of all cause of her character development. Very excited to see you guys continue.

It's not about movements; it's about spirituality. Each element is based around its own philosophy and state of being. Aang has an easy time with waterbending because he has an easy time connecting to mindset of what waterbending is about. That's why (spoilers) he has a hard time with earth, and Korra has a hard time with air. It's not that the martial arts are difficult, it's that their personalities conflict with core beliefs of the bending style.

@@Celestia282 obviously it's not ALL about the moves. But I wanted to specifically point out that Aang has had training in at least something similar. It's a testament to how Katara advances later on in the show, and proves she's a prodigy 😁 and also, I didn't like how Korra expanded on why avatars would have difficulty in at least one element, "depending on their personality". In ATLA, it was brought up as a more physical problem. The opposite to water is fire, therefore the opposite to air is earth, "you're working with your natural opposite" was Kataras words. Korra just made it confusing for me so I tend not to think of it 😬

​@@notsyntiq It's a mental block based around the differences in thought patterns and strategy. Korra doesn't contradict Katara's reasoning. He struggles to move the rock because he keeps trying to think of ways to move the rock, when the earthbender's solution to the problem is Move The Rock.

I gotta love Sokka. When Katara almost makes Aang cry he gives her a dirty look but when she realizes her mistake and apologizes he immediately cracks a joke to lift the mood

I've always thought of Aang learning waterbending faster than Katara like this -- when I was 16, I and this one girl took up violin lessons around the same time. Even though we started at the same time, I advanced much more quickly because I had already taken 9 years of piano lessons: I already knew music, all I had to do was take what I had already learned and apply it to another instrument. Same thing with bending: Aang may not know yet how to waterbend, but he knows how to airbend, so he already has a baseline of how to bend just in general. Meanwhile Katara is trying to learn both how to waterbend and the principle of bending an element at the same time, the latter of which Aang doesn't have to learn a second time.

I appreciate you pausing when start discussing something. Some people just end up talking over half the episode and asking question the show has already answered.

All I could think about is "I hope you keep this Katara in mind when you meet book 3 Katara knowing they are only six months apart" like y'all ain't ready

It’s easier for Aang to master waterbending since water and air are flow-y and very fluid, so the bending movements are really similar, as opposed to earth and fire.

Aangs already a master airbender so I’m fairly certain the reason he picked up water so quick has to do with the similarities between the flowing movement of airbending and waterbending

"How do you know there's no more cabbage men" Is Ruff psychic? The show is over the course of nine months. The show starts like a week or two before the start of winter and ends in like late August, early September. SeeOhKnee, Aang hasn't mastered the four elements. The Avatar State gives Aang the knowledge of all the previous Avatars. That's how he is able to know waterbending without knowing waterbending. Sokka and Katara are voiced by teenagers too.

Finally, I was waiting for the Avatar uploads. Love the videos you post but this is my favorite series so far. Hope you can get the time to do 2 per week!

While Sokka might not be a bender, he’s an invaluable part of the team, which I would say is not just muscle but more as the brains at time goes on. He might be comic relief and dumb at times but he’s shown to be very intelligent and secure in his abilities when they need it even if hes not magical. He’s one of those characters I thought would get annoying to me but after watching the whole show he’s one of my favorites.

8:03 M Night Shyamalan did a live action movie version of the first season that came out in 2010 that was sooooo bad due to a lot of issues, but Netflix is currently working on their own live action series that is expected to come out some time later this year (although no official release date has been set yet).

Sozin's Comet comes at the end of summer. Previous episode was the winter solstice. Summer will start six months later with the summer solstice and end three months after that with the fall equinox. So the comet shows up about nine months or so after the end of the previous episode.

people have actually sat down and worked out a legitimate monetary conversion system for this scene. I 'THINK' it ended up as a 20 thousand dollar scroll Aang offered 2 dollars for it.

Pretty much all the kids in the main cast were voiced by kids, Zach Eisen (Aang) was 12, Mae Whitman (Katara) was 14 or so, I think Jack De Sena (Sokka) was 17-18 the only real odd one out is Dante Basco as Zuko, who I think was about 30 when the series entered prod.

You guys are hilarious and have great taste, you really picked shows that make me miss my childhood. If you have the time to fit some of these into your schedule, I highly recommend Regular Show, Batman Beyond and Spectacular Spider-Man. All of these were some of the best shows of the early 2000’s and like Gravity falls, have a lot of adult jokes and dark moments that you guys would love. Appreciate the reactions, hope to see more in the future!! Edit: Also I know it’s been a while but you guys would also love Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated. It’s literally one of the best Scooby-Doo series ever and is a lot like Gravity Falls. Plus it can be very dark at times and has one of the best storylines in cartoon history
