Automated Shell Wrapper, Version 2.0

Ғылым және технология

This new machine produces a smoother taping job and also allows switching between different shell sizes without the need for tools. It also has a stronger clamping mechanism than the previous machine, as well as a larger and more easily accessed hand wheel for opening and closing the shell clamp. The knocking sound on each revolution is caused from a bolt hitting the lower support rod, which needs to be cut shorter.

Briiliant job on the new machine, the repurposed cooking pot makes an ideal enclosure :)

I have to give it to you for your creativity. I love the consisted pattern personally I like being able to change the angle but I think both your machines get the job done just as well. As to the question you asked on my paster I use wetted sponges to contain the water and keep it from leaking and dripping.

That is seriously clever. Respect to you. I'd buy one, I hate pasting!

I tried the wetted sponge thing on this one at first, with the sponge sticking out the side of the container and the tape would wrap around the containre and hit the sponge port on the way to the shell. The centrifugal forces would overpower the capillary forces of the sponge however and sling all the water out of the sponge and all over the table. I think in your case the centrifugal forces are helping to keep the water in the sponge though, so you don't have that problem.

Yes, I designed and fabricated the machine myself. Most of the parts are mass produced consumer items, which keeps the material cost to a minimum.

On this one you actually can change the angle, just not while the machine is running. The shell clamp is one big C clamp that slides on slotted channels so that the shell stays centered as the angle changes. You just loosen the two big knobs and slide it to the angle that minimizes the unpasted area for each shell, then tighten the knobs back down to lock it in place. You just can't see the knobs in this video.

A brilliant machine, beautiful results. Great job! What kind of machine are you using? Haven't seen those before, but would love to have one to modify myself. It looks like it was originally some kind of a kitchenmachine or something similar.

So it's mounted with a few supporting wheels, driven by gears or similar? The reason I'm so interested is the fact that your shells look better than from the commercial pasting machine, so this is deffiniely the machine to make. Would love to get some help on the design, as my creativity is limited to say the least.

There's a large ring gear attached to the bottom of the turn table, then a motor with a pinion gear drives it.

Its interesting that you run two full shell rotations to paste the shell. Do you find the second layer of tape staggers the first layer? Its something i havent thought to test.. up til now. The chinese pasting machines would likely run one shell rotation at half speed (1.45rpm) to apply the same amount of tape. Whichever the case, both methods are more expedient than pasting by hand.

I was working on a redesign of passfire at the beginning of the year and almost got it done before having to stop to work on a job that actually pays. I started posting new articles for a while but it had no effect on membership and I had to stop to keep from going broke.

One full rotation applies two layers of a 50% overlapping tape pattern, which is four actual layers of paper if you cut the shell in half and counted the layers. Thus two rotations gives eight layers of paper, which is what I have found to be the minimum shell wall necessary for the proper confinement needed to give a perfectly round break where all stars take fire. I tried using one layer with a lot of different break charges but never got a break I was happy with.

+pyronaught One time builds have the appeal of being unique :) I have a hand cranked pasting machine that uses plywood gears.. I prefer wood as its much easier/cleaner to work with than metal. Its also cheaper and easier to source, the entire machine cost less than $100 The machine will handle 2" thru 6" shells and carries a full size (200m) tape roll which can be std gummed tape or virgin kraftpaper (slit from a big roll). It has a glue applicator that can be filled with water for gummed tape and any kind of glue for the slitted kraft tape. I find a blend of wheatstarch/pva works very well. The slitted virgin kraft has much higher tensile/burst strength than gummed tape, it provides a more confinement per unit of thickness.
