Visco Fuse Machine

Ғылым және технология

An automated Visco (Safety) Fuse Spinning Machine. I built this myself in the spring of 2011 at Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering as a Passionate Pursuit. I designed and built a visco fuse (safety fuse for fireworks) spinning machine. It takes 20 spools of thread and wraps them around a black powder core, and then coats the 1/8" fuse in a waterproof nitrocellulose lacquer. It operates at a speed comparable to commercial machines and is built for safety; it is entirely non-sparking and removed from ignition sources. I designed it completely from scratch and machined all of the parts in the Olin machine shop.
Plans for this machine can be found at www.pyrotechnicmachines.com
See www.olinprojects.com/ to see more about this project or other projects by the students at Olin College.

One of the best homemade visco machines i've seen, although it burns faster than normal visco.

@Fishingwithexplosive It's a modfied black powder formula to burn a little slower. regular bp will make a fast burning fuse.

@z3nx10 Its dipped in Nitrocellulose laquer before winding. This sort of glues it together and waterproofs it.

very similar to mine i built one out of knecks just to se it would work and suprisingly it did. you can call it a prototype now im going to build one to last and work more efficiently

That would be pretty cool if the school were called the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering as a Passionate Pursuit, but it doesn't seem to be the case on their website.

also, when you say you had a fast BP, was it a well milled 75/15/10 mix? I was thinking to myself just this afternoon that a standard ratio comp might be too speedy, perhaps a 65/20/15 mix?

hi there, really nice work, ive probably dreamt up 1000 different ways of making one, now i dont have to. Would it be ok to post this on a legitimate pyrotechnics forum with all credits to your name? Very very useful info. again many thanks for sharing with us.

Burn speed has little to do with the manufacturing process. I only had some really fast BP at the when I tested this, but burn speed can be controlled with the BP composition. @octavio2895, try making the hole in your top spinning die larger and/or add a larger chamfer on that hole. Or else you need more threads on top.

1/8th is a bit big for visco, have you figured out how they get commercial fuse down to 2mm is it the string diameter most homemade visco machines make more like a timefuse.

@mayhem. Yes! Definitely. Yes, I'm using standard, 75/15/10 mix, and with ultra-fast home-cooked buckthorn charcoal. (It's a great break charge, but its way too fast for fuse). Sadly, I've been away from my machine for the past year, so I haven't had the chance to experiment with any other compositions, but adjusting the burn rate is entirely a formulation problem, it really doesn't involve the machine. @ megara13. All the numbers are now available on my website (see above description)
