Shell pasting machine - homemade

Ғылым және технология

That's my homemade shell pasting machine. It's computer controled trough USB port. I wrote a C# program that controls machines actions like change of speed of shell rotation and swing arm position.
This is just a dry run, so the tape isn't wet...

Pretty cool, I wish I had one of these because the 3 strip method really sucks!

Hi there Zmuro The best DIY machine i've seen!! I was wondering what is the width of the paper and (if you tried others) the best in your opinion? Just asking for a Dutch friend.

Hi. Well, the tape width depends on shell size. For 4"and 5" shell I use 15-19mm wide tape and for 6-8" 25mm wide tape.

How did you construct the tape moistener? Or did you buy it somewhere? Cool machine

The housing is made from a doorbell. I just put two sponges in there and wet them.

how do you know when the shell needs the angle to change? and how did you program it to do this? thank you

Brendan Borcherding It's really quite simple, you just need to use a little math :) I made some basic calculations and put formulas in excel sheet. If you know how fast the rim rotates, how much tape you want to overlap in each pass and the angle of the shell regarding to the shell equator, you can calculate how fast should the shell rotates at each angle.

Sorry I'm asking all these questions, but what kind of motor did you use so that you could program the speed change with such low rpm?

Brendan Borcherding I used small 15V DC motor with gears, it cost's around 30 eur. Than I used MotorHawk board, which can control two DC motors with PWM. Than I wrote C# program which controls all motors. The MotorHawk board also has digital outputs so you can contol the relays for actuator that changes the angle and the main motor.

Hello. Quick question, did you go all all the way calculating the rotational speed for each inclination using spherical coordinates or did you do your calculations in a carthesian coordinate system?
