Auto-Kamado Ash Pan Swap during a power outage?? | Beef Short Ribs | Char-griller AKORN Auto-Kamado

Ойын-сауық

Apologies for the dark shots in the beginning of this video :/
Some viewers had asked me if the ash pan from the normal Akorn fits the Auto-Kamado in case of a sudden power outage or malfunction. You'll know after watching this video!
Disclaimer: Changing out the ash pan of a lit grill is not recommended as there is a high possibility of dropping hot coals/ashes and starting a fire!!

    I had an electric smoker that blew the heating element shortly after I put the Thanksgiving turkey in three years ago. I now own a standard Akorn and I love it. It doesn't care what the electrical situation is, it just works.

    Excellent video. Why not buy an original replacement pan part from Char Griller and install it on the Auto? Then cook with the vent completely shut with power or you can use the vent if cooking with no power. Best of both worlds that way?

    I was hoping that this would function as a normal Akorn without automatic control without the fan. Too bad, but it was on sale for $200 so I guess I will deal with it. The one thing I plan to try is using my little 18v Ridgid Inverter to run it, not only would that let me use this in a no power situation, but it was mostly so I could make it portable without needing to be near a power source, or run an extension cord. If that works well, I am set. If not can you say what ash pan will fit? They offer two one for the 6719, 96719, and a different one for the 16619, 16620, 16820.

    Super cool video! Good information to know. Do you mind saying what the temp is on the display every time you check the food? Kinda hard to see. This pit is going to be a lot easier to clean than my MB560. Im also curios how the flap holds up.

    Hey Casey, thanks for watching! Oops, sorry about that, I think I normally do. I know i was probing for tenderness and not really looking at the temp in some parts of this video. The flap should be pretty safe. I don't see any way that lit charcoal could get anywhere close to it with the way they have it set up.

    Hey there - thanks man! Here's the ashpan you want: www.chargriller.com/products/gray-ashpan - also, FYI .. Char-Griller support says you'll void warranty if you use a manual ashpan on the grill (i don't see how they'd know, but i wanted to tell you). 200F is the lowest setting, but you could probably keep the top vent almost closed to limit air?

    That was the exact question I was asking, does the bottom of the other, older kamado fit this one? Good to know it does. I don't like the fact that they took off the bottom vent. What if somebody wants to cook without power, you can't unless you have the older bottom with the vent on!

  • @RobsBackyardBBQ

    @RobsBackyardBBQ

    Yeah, looks like the body is the exact same as the original Akorn which might come in handy if the power goes out!

    so, I have to have both akorns to swap the bottom? lol which one is your favorite? i just sold my old manual one and bought an auto as i was impressed with the auto tem settings. now im regretting, what should I do in the rain? i could cook in rain without any issues in manual kamado, would there be any issues if its raining and this thing is on?

  • @RobsBackyardBBQ

    @RobsBackyardBBQ

    Hey there - no, you can purchase a gray manual ash pan from the chargriller website (www.chargriller.com/products/gray-ashpan) - however, support told me that if you use a manual ash pan you are voiding your warranty. If you lose power you can always use a battery pack (planning an auto-kamado 'hacks' video where i'll show that off). I use mine in the rain - actually, loving the top vent because of rain grilling. Just try to keep the plug from getting wet it you can. I'll normally use an extension cord and hide the plug under the bottom grill shelf (on a 2x4 scrap to keep it off the ground).

    It's good to know that it could work with no power if need be. Of course one would need to have the original Akorn to do that. I guess you could have a power bank as some of the Masterbuilt guys use on the gravity pits for the just in case moments. Still trying to justify buying this unit but the more I see of it, the more I justify it...LOL Nice video, thanks!

    @@RobsBackyardBBQ I had tagged the power bank and cable I got from Amazon in my comment on here the other day - guess it was flagged LOL. But less than $30 and I can get 24 hour cooks.
