Augustine REFUTES Protestants on Justification

Ойын-сауық

Quite often one will hear the myth that St. Augustine is some sort of Proto-Protestant on justification...nothing can be further from the truth. In this video, I go through St. Augustine's entire system on the matter, copiously quoting from his tracts, letters, and homilies on issues like "what is justice?," "what is justification?," "what is grace?," purgatory, mass for the dead, etc., while also responding to some of the best anti-Catholic arguments from his works.
If you want to watch more on this topic, I would suggest watching this other video I did on the topic: • Justification: the Cat...

    Reading Jaroslav Pelikan’s history of the development of Christian doctrine (a Lutheran scholar at the time of authorship) was enough to convince me of the madness of reformers, and that Augustine was absolutely NOT “on their side”. His history of reformation doctrine demonstrates conclusively, though perhaps unintentionally, the total alien invasion into Christian history that the reformers perpetuated.

    I'm so glad that you're getting into this letter. When I first read it, I was stunned. It's one thing for the reformers to claim that they have a legitimate critique and a different subjective interpretation, it's another thing entirely when they knew exactly what they were doing. God is not mocked.

    @@MilitantThomist indeed. I shared that letter that you read at the beginning to a Lutheran friend of mine who's really really Lutheran and super serious about his faith and he just got angry. He got unbelievably wildly angry, immediately went into mudslinging, it was one of the poorest responses I've ever seen. I'm actually stunned that Philip actually committed this to writing. This is the most damning admission of the reformationist / protestant origins that I've ever heard.

    Christian, i have a question : you mention that the thomistic position is that sanctifying grace resides in the nature of the soul and then from this grace flows necessarily all the supernatural virtues to the different faculties since they are virtually contained in sanctifying grace. Now i was reading Garrigou Lagrange’s 3 ages of the interior life and he says that we can lose the state of grace and still have supernatural faith. How is that possible ?

  • @secessionblog3189

    @secessionblog3189

    I'll gonna take a wild guess and hope someone more knowledgable steps in to correct this. I suppose it's because mortal sin drives out the grace that puts us in right relation with God, but does not undo the grace of regeneration. That grace of regeneration is still present which allows us to retain supernatural faith and moves the will to repent and seek reconciliation. ?

    St. Thomas answers in his commentary on Romans by distinguishing faith as a habit and faith as a virtue, For a virtue is a principle of a perfect act. But an act depending on two principles cannot be perfect, if either of the principles lacks its perfection, just as riding cannot be perfect, if the horse does not run well or the rider does not know how to guide the horse. Now the act of faith, which is to believe, depends on the intellect and on the will moving the intellect to assent. Hence, the act of faith will be perfect, if the will is perfected by the habit of charity and the intellect by the habit of faith, but not if the habit of charity is lacking. Consequently, faith formed by charity is a virtue; but not unformed faith. (Rom.C1.L6.n106.3)

    Good question…any faithful Catholic would assent, on the basis of the authority of the Church, to the dogmas of the Church. Now, did he, in his status, recognize explicitly all those dogmas that would one day be promulgated? Probably not. Would he, through a certain process of reasoning, accept these as divinely revealed? Maybe.

    I think there can be unity on the question of that virtues which justifies (i.e., fiducia=fides formata), BUT that is about where the positions stop aligning. For, we have COMPLETELY different views of what that virtue does...the Reformed think that it is an instrument of apprehending something OUTSIDE of ourselves. On the other hand, the Catholic thinks that it is a virtue that is formal justice.
