Audi A6 3.2 - Multiple Cylinder Misfire

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I drove my car without its catalytic converters and revved it past the red line a few weeks ago. I had a lot of fun. This engine is an absolute beast! After installing replacement catalytic converters, the car started with terrible misfire. Watch this video to find out what happened.

All sounds good with your video but why why were you reving past redline to hear how it sounds? That doesn't make sense. The mechanical ability of your engine quickly drops off at or before redline. Peak power is before redline almost always. Like any machine, it's harmless within operating speeds. As soon as you go above redline by say 500rpm, you risk doing permanent harm to your engine. My friend once downshifted to 2nd in a 2007 Saab 9-3 on the freeway, meaning to take 4th. It went straight to 8000 rpm and the entire valvetrain ate itself. The head had to be replaced. Car ended up being given away for nothing. Perfect HO 210hp 220tq 6 speed manual car driven by a pretty lady in her 40s first time a young guy drove it he exceeded redline and destroyed an engine that was taken care of for so long

@@reillydowd5366 You are right. Revving past the red line is not good for the engine. However this 3.2 FSI quattro engine takes it like a boss! I have done this many many many times in the past and have done so recently with the exhaust installed. The sound is just incredible!!! I wouldn't advise anyone to do it too. I just can't help doing it sometimes when I am enjoying the sporty drive with the windows down. I put it in neutral while the car is still rolling and rev it past the limit a few times, vroum, vroum, vrouuuuuuuuuum! I let the rpm get down and I go back to sport mode then I floor it! Fueewww!!! It flies like a rocket!😅 I love this car...

@@ThatAfricanGuy i can also affirm what African Audi says. The 3.2 can take the high revs, even downshifting at high speeds, the gears on the quatro system ensure seemless downshifts almost to good for the price of the car. Sounds like a true sportscar, and people do get out of the way when they hear the revs coming.

Thanks! You mean Q5, right? I haven't seen that code before but I just researched it and it seems the description for it is "cylinder imbalance" meaning the air/fuel ratio in one or more cylinders is different than the other cylinders. Try using some injector cleaner for some time to see if it helps.

  • @ThatAfricanGuy

It seems P21A1 is reporting air/fuel ratio issue in cylinder 6 specifically.

@@ThatAfricanGuy yes Q5, exactly! Sorry for typo. The fun thing is that the code actually appeared after using Lucas fuel injector cleaner! I did some other work on the car and wasn't sure if it could be air leak. I think I will try adding some more injector cleaner (maybe some particles got stuck or something). Thank you for your reply!

Could be the injector. Try some injector cleaner in your fuel for some time. Follow the instructions on the bottle. Add the appropriate amount when refueling and give it time. You may need to do this over a few thousand miles to see improvement.

I was wondering how you got the engine to rev past redline, you have modified ECU or transmission? I have the same car which has a softlimiter when stationary at 4K rpm and when driving, it doesn't shoot over 7K rpm. Downshifting it doesn't allow if the revs will be at 6700rpm or higher when it would be in the lower gear, just like upshifting when the revs are barely above 1K rpm. I guess the computer calculates the rpm for given speed and gear or maybe it recalls from a set table of when allow or block actions inside the TCU. EDIT: Also I think it would be weird if you rev the car that your symptoms would come from oxygen sensor since I think any fuel injected car would go into open loop not requiring the O2 sensors when flooring it. Then returning back to closed loop mode to be more efficient. You can see that in OBD scanner when CL or OL is active. But I can be wrong ofcourse.

While the car is rolling, shift to Neutral, and then you can rev it as high as you want. Not recommended though as it may accelerate engine wear.

I am on my third one after the original one gave up. They've been consistently failing after about 2 years. I installed the last one in August 2020. By November 2022 this year it started showing signs of weakness. I think the original battery which was AGM lasted more than 10 years! The battery management system on this car is great though!
