    Glad you like them! To be honest, this was the third run on shooting this. I record on a smartphone in the car. I have a new phone and getting the sound right has been a challenge since it does not have a microphone jack. I shot the first version of this video back in November... Didn't like it. I shot another version later in a hotel room. Didn't like it. HAHA! By the time I shot this, I had done it enough times that I had my talking points down. I still didn't like the sound, but have been using a program that has decent audio editing so that I could work with my microphone challenges. Thanks for visiting.

Thanks for the play by play and mentioning who you got to do the work on your car. Well, off to Euro Pros I go to get my #3 fuel injector replaced. Thanks again.

    Sorry to hear of your troubles! Did you find an issue with #3? Or are you assuming it's the injector since everything you checked is good? Be advised that they may recommend replacing all injectors. The reasoning is that there is a lot of labor involved with replacing even one injector. If another fails next month, then all of the same labor has to be done again. Sure, he gets paid either way and will do the job twice. But there may be long-term savings to be had with replacing them all together. I'm detail-oriented and wanted them all done together, as if they might be "balanced." They're not, but I'm glad to know they're good for a while. Good Luck!

    @UC50klj0TJbRYm2V90ML96qw - WOW! That's a big move for troubleshooting. I do not think it's the throttle body since a fault there would affect all cylinders, even if just sporadically. If you've swapped the injectors, plugs, and coils, all without the fault moving to another cylinder, I have to wonder if you have a compression problem. With that said, I'm not a mechanic and could be wrong. It may be time to take the car to someone with more knowledge and experience. Good Luck!

    There are cheap scan tools that could have caught that misfiring injector. It's either fuel.or spark. I had a 96 golf gl with mystery ignition problems. If I pushed it, the engine seemed to lock up. One day I had to have it towed home. Pulling the Bosch plat plugs, two had blown up. Ceramic shards inside the combustion chamber. I fished them put with a rag soaked in STP (sticky). Then filled the combustion chambers with kerosene with cool disconnected. I turned the engine oner, sending a spout of kerosene into the air. Cleaned out those spark plug shards. It turned out the engine grounding strap had a bad connection. Two spark plugs were firing at the same time. The car ran fine after the second ground strap. Though one of the cylinders had a little bit low compression.

    Thanks for sharing your experience. I have a tool that's specific to VW/Audi. It reads more than just OBD2 codes. Regardless, the tool can only track to a cylinder; it cannot distinguish between an injector issue and a spark issue... only a misfire on a specific cylinder. That's where troubleshooting comes into play. Thanks for visiting.

    I'm not fond of cold air intakes. They're for noise and entertainment, IMO. ;-) Exhaust upgrades are subjective. I think just about anyone can get tired of a drone, especially on a long trip. I've gone back to more sound suppression. See my "Baun Performance" playlist for details. Given the ongoing experimentation required to get the sound that you want, I think I'll leave the exhaust alone on my next car. I can even see myself returning to an IS20 turbo and restoring the stock downpipe if my IS38 turbo ever needs replacing. I won't do anything before that, but the downpipe and IS38 contribute to a bit of extra sound. Sure, it sounds great, but it gets old on a long trip, especially if the car is loaded. Hey Scott, I just purchased a 2013 VW CC 6-speed manual and the day I bought it ran just fine. However before I bought it the engine would have a noticable ticking noise that I didn't recognize due to inexperience, and the day after I tried to drive it to work and it threw that flashing engine light and epc light at me. I pulled over into a park and felt the engine bogging and stuttering at low rpms, and I figured it was misfiring. I opened the hood to listen to and feel the engine, it had that same ticking sound and it was unusually shaking a lot. My dad thought it could be a problem with the sensor for the throttle pedal, so we bought a replacement. Replacing that took the epc light away, but I don't know if it will come back. I want to replace the coil packs and plugs, but now that I've watched your video I really am concerned about it being the fuel injectors. Problem is I put my all into the car financially, and I didn't even pay for it in it's entirety, my father lent me money. So I'm extreeeeemely parsimonious right now. Do you mind helping me figure this out? Thank you for this video! It was very educational.

    Armando - I cannot give adequate assistance from afar. Without a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), replacing the accelerator pedal sensor seems like guesswork from my point of view. I never experience fuel injector failure on my horse drawn wagon, so clearly the car is at fault. Glad it was a simple fix. Something to consider is that the APR (or any) tune may cause the injectors to approach their duty cycle more often and thus fail sooner. But for the performance you get out of it, I would just make injector replacement a 100k mile service item. I really appreciate that you're forecasting the future of my car. Don't be in a rush to swap the injectors unless you have eliminated the possibility that spark plugs or coil packs are culprits. Also, pull the plugs to make sure they're clean. Although I haven't seen it on my GTI, I once had a 1.8T (pre-E888) valve cover gasket leak that let a tiny amount of oil into the spark plug well. That could cause similar results. In short, eliminate the cheap problems before jumping on the expensive ones. Good Luck!

    A few comments and a few questions: The waterpump/thermostat/housing are all kind of related and that's a weak point on the EA888Gen3. We have 2 MK7's (Alltrack & R) and BOTH suffered failures under warranty. I believe the newer water pumps have more aluminum and less plastic and might be more reliable. The other EA888Gen3 weak point is the rear main seal - when I upgraded the clutch on my 6MT R to accomodate the Stage1 93 octane (high torque) tune, I had them install an upgraded RMS. Alltrack is still stock and untouched. Maybe it was the crappy gas that was the straw that broke the camel's back regarding the bad injector! I'm so happy to hear about the general longevity of the car - makes me feel like I made some good purchases. But 2 questions (feel free to use these for your next Q&A) 1) If your GTI died today (tree falls on it, bursts into flames, drives into the ocean) and you needed a new car right away, what would you buy? 2) Looking down the road 3-4 years and it's time to put the GTI out to pasture, are there any cars coming down the road (hybrid, electric, etc...) that you would want to buy to replace the GTI?

  • @StealthGTI

    @StealthGTI

    3 жыл бұрын

    I thought about the fuel quality issue, too. BUT, if it was a fuel problem, it seems to me that it would have taken out more than one injector. I think the one had finally met its match. I'll find out soon: I'm about to do the trip again with another trailer. I'm not sure if I should be excited or apprehensive about that. HAHA! It's funny that you chose "tree falls on it" when talking about my GTI dying. I used that term in an upcoming video segment where I talk about other cars. To be honest, I'm not sure what I would get. I don't like the Mk8 at the moment. So, I'd consider a 2020 GTI. But I've also been keeping my eyes on Subaru Crosstreks (for small off-road adventures), Atlases (for slightly larger off-road adventures), and small cargo vans for conversion ideas. NONE of those can compare to the fun have in a tuned GTI. Still, I seldom unleash my GTI's full power and almost never push it to its handling limit. So, even if I got a Crosstrek with only 182 hp, odds are fair that I'd still enjoy it since it would likely be more comfortable and able to take me places that a GTI cannot touch. I hope to have a long time to think about my options.

    I’m currently experiencing the cylinder 3 misfire myself, the misfire would only begin when the engine is left to idle, if I kept the revs above 1k all 4 cylinders would stay firing correctly… I’ve changed the coil, spark plugs, and fixed some fault wiring on the cylinder 3 coil connector… which led me to believe the previous owner has attempted it before, my next step now is to replace the injector, and clean the manifold whilst I’m there. Really bugging me now.

    If you choose to replace an injector, just do them all at once. If one is really bad, how long before you have to do all of the labor again to replace another... and then another. Doing the same labor over and over would be a hassle. Hopefully, an injector is the correct diagnosis for you. Good Luck!

    I'm not sure if your troubleshooting efforts are logical or if they're following diagnostic trouble codes and a good process of elimination. Are your spark plugs OE and properly gapped? Swap coil packs between good and bad cylinders first to see if the fault moves. If the fault does not move, then trying swapping spark plugs next. If the fault moves for either of those swaps, then you don't need to go through the cost and hassle of replacing injectors. Always start cheap. If those don't move or resolve the fault, then perhaps you have an injector problem. BUT, don't take my mechanical advice before spending lots of money one expensive parts. Seek competent assistance. Good Luck!

    If mechanics are paid by commission then run...run away VERY fast. That is, unless you know the mechanic and they can be trusted. Lots of dealers -- especially independent service locations -- put their mechs on commission actually HOPING they will push and/or exaggerate parts/services needed in order to boost their salaries, and the owner makes more money in the process. I am extremely suspicious [especially these days] of mechanics on commission. It's the first thing I ask service location consultants! BTW... were you driving on either the Yorktown or Jamestown Parkway(s) in this video? Looks REALLY familiar... those arched underpasses. VERY beautiful in that area of Virginia. I used to take girls out on either of those Parkway's river edges (pseudo-beaches) at night when there were full moons reflecting off of the James or York rivers as a teen with my first car. Girls LOVED riding on those parkways at night. Ahhhh, the memories of youth! *sigh*. :-P

    Sometimes, such as when traveling far from home, we have little choice but to suck-up whatever service we can get. Thankfully, my situation allowed me to drive the car home and have a trusted mechanic address this. As for the road, yes, I was on the Colonial Parkway. Sometimes I record on that road or on one of Yorktown's one-way tour roads where I can drive sedately without worry of cross-traffic. Thanks for visiting!
