Isayama could’ve followed through what he made Kruger say, about the way to end the cycle, it’s all there “make a family, love someone, love the people of the walls etc.” it’s right in our faces, it’s also a fact that Kruger wasn’t solely talking to Grisha alone which makes it a solid base for an ending plot, for Eren to have something another reason to fight for not just for friends, his people and ending the cycle(unlike what we got) All of the character’s ending was for nothing, Renier’s character conclusion is insulting, Levi’s ending was just right(wouldn’t wanna dirty THE Cashcow), the rest character conclusions was even more insulting.. mass murderers and accomplices of Eren’s genocide being “Ambassadors of peace”????.. but at the very least Isayama chose the “hopeful” route and ended it to what it would logically do, Armin’s idealistic passion destroyed.. they wasted and assassinated Historia’s character, all the parallels went to nothing, her baby being the first free royal child/eldian born, her almost 3 years of absence, lack of input to the last arc for nothing, completely thrown aside for some pretentious subversion to satisfy certain fans using a last minute reveal of Ymir’s stupid intentions he made Eren’s actions pointless in the grander scheme his “plans” were simply gambles, his mother was less important than his friends apparently and _(despite having almost the entirety of his life living along the girl he apparently liked and while not showing a hint of romacr 99% of the time)_ he cried from not getting the p*ssy instead of you know GUILT from having to kiII 80% of the world.., “but it shows he’s just a teenag-“ SHUT THE F#CK UP. it turns out everything he did was just an act and was all a part of Ymir’s simulation, which is.. *to see someone obsessed with her lover(like her) kiII the one she’s obsessed with...* and that is supposed to be how Ymir got free’d.. He’s making a fool out of his audiences..

The scene with the bird is clearly symbolic. The bird is hinted thoughtout the entire show especially in the intros and outros. A bird symbolizes freedom, it's Eren's "spirit animal". The bird stop to wrap the scarf around her and then kept flying forward. Like Eren came into her life wrap the scarf around her and then kept moving forward. The scene captures their entire relationship in one moment.

(Her thoughts) she never lived a happy life to begin with. I understand where you’re coming from but seriously though we meet Ymir as a slave. And she ends her life as a “slave” but with Titan powers. If your life was never good but you gained something with the next person that’s where you will stay. This was her logic I believe. Also Ymir wasn’t really a character to dig into frfr. Origin stories are supposed to be plain.

Just to mention this, Eren wasn’t putting on a strong front. The person he is seen as in S4 is the person he became after all he’s been through. That outburst doesn’t define his character, it was just the result of all the countless emotions building up within him throughout the Rumbling, as well as his grief that he’ll never see any of his friends again. He was just venting, there is nothing more to it. And after he vented, he regains his grip on his emotions. He clearly asks Armin not to tell Mikasa about it and he also admits that he actually was planning on completing the Rumbling.

As a writer... I get the feeling... Writing a story as expansive as Attack on Titan not every single thing you write is going to be perfect... I can't hate on Isayama's work because I've only written 32 pages and page 31 was not as good as the others. That's okay. It's not bad, just not as good. I like what Isayama wrote. You're writing fiction, plot devices are an inevitable thing. I like this. Thanks Isayama.

I completely agree with the bit about Eren reverting to just being a teenager in love. It's SO sad that he can't just be that kid, and be with her, and in that moment, we can see that laid bare. It made people angry because they didn't understand that in-so-far as Eren's life goes, this is a tragic, tragic tale, where a normal boy was forced into the role of omniscient savior, and was robbed of his life with the woman he loves. It makes them angry because it isn't fair. The implication is that he's being given the rawest of deals, NOT that "he cares more about Mikasa than 80% of all humanity." That's not the point, and it's unfortunate that they cannot see the forest for the trees.

  • @CupOfWhiskey

Except he's not that kid, he far from it. He's changed so much throughout the story and its random as hell he starts talking like that. The writing did not do a good job. If they wanted to protray Eren spilling his true feelings about her they should have written it different. Hes not 14, he's never done anything like how he acted in that moment, and he's grown up faster than a lot of people at such a young age. Hence acting out of character

@@CupOfWhiskey Something to consider, but he likely never grew up at all. Mentally he's still the same child who had just seen his mother die in front of him, his portrayal as a child in the last few chapters is a metaphor for that. He was never given the chance to grow up like normal teenagers do, and he never moved on from his mother's death like how Armin moved on from his parents and grandparents, and Mikasa with her parents. The amount of trauma he faced from the day his mother died combined with the Attack and Founder, seeing the past, present and future at once and his sudden god-given titan powers? And the discovery of Annie/Bert/Reiner and Ymir's secrets? On top of all the deaths he witnessed? I can imagine all of these things would heavily mess with any 15yo, and then especially once he gets to the basement and realises that he now is responsible for saving every single life within the walls. His personality post-timeskip was not a change in character, but rather a mask built from extreme trauma, guilt and grief. Him breaking down pathetically like a child in his last conversation with his childhood best friend makes a lot of sense when you consider all that he's done and been through.

The Mikasa talk with Armin makes sense in my opinion. We know that he's taken a toll by the fact that he'll kill millions of people, because we can see that when he saved that kid from the angry merchants. He is upset but he has just come to terms and accepted it. He wasn't thinking about what Mikasa will do after he's gone, so when Armin brought it up it's only natural that he'll be upset react like a normal teenager. He has a great power that makes him not normal, but he still grew up not being aware of that. In my opinion he is still the same person he was in the scouts, he's just aware of what's to come

Alex is Fluffy he bought them time and foundation to settle with the outside world. Otherwise Marley would’ve killed all of them. Another ending would’ve been unrealistic. 2000 years of fear and mistrust doesn’t just go away. They don’t just immediately believe the Titans are gone, just the Eldians said so. But since they saved them the outside world may be more open to what the Eldians got to say. That was Eren’s plan. Things don’t solve itself over night, just look at how war is still going on in the real world. But it’s not as much as it used to be because people started communicating with each other.

There is a possibility that the people at Eren’s grave were Falco and Gabi, but that seems less likely. Mikasa was already present in the previous few drafts, and the female at the grave had a scarf at all times, so it would make sense for it to be her. As for the guy, the most likely is indeed Jean. Not only does it look like his hairstyle in the last chapters, he already had a crush on Mikasa ever since they met eachother. And Mikasa shouldn’t stay single forever. Even Eren himself said that even though he wanted her to think of him at all times, he still wanted her to be happy. So I think it’s good she found someone.

@Ryoumen Sukuna perhaps. But I don’t think they should make another movie or sequel. Even though the child at the end would make for a perfect sequel, I think it would be too similar to the original for most people to enjoy it equally. But that’s the point of Eren’s tree becoming the same. It means repetition. That conflict is unavoidable, so it’s repetitive. So yeah, perfect sequel, but I think it’s better as the half-open ending that’s open for interpretation.

I had a theory after the bird scene, and the extra pages corroborated it. In the last vestiges of the paths created by the centipede creature, Eren was still able to influence the real world through his love for Mikasa, and his desire for freedom, which is how he uses the birds to wrap scarfs, and send memories to Eldians throughout time, just as Ymir was able to influence all titans at will. This likely happened as the centipede creature recconected with his head in 122, and is the reason why the worm tree regrew. I noticed that in the final Panel, there are birds circling the tree, whereas with Ymir, there were not. This could mean that Eren still influences the birds. I also believe that even if the child makes contact with the worm, the Titans will not return as they once were, as they were borne out of Ymir's enslavement to the king, and given the child is evidently in differing circumstances, the power will manifest differently.

Whoa whoa. Okay that actually is a good theory. I had to go back to the panels and check that to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. But those birds are definitely there at the end and not with Ymir’s tree. The difference of manifestation based on the current state of events in that timeline would definitely change the outcome and how the creature would adhere to whomever it needed to. The fact that Attack on Titan is revolved now around how war is inevitable and how Ymir’s love was so tragic she had to watch Mikasa destroy her own self just to kill the man she loved was how everything died down. I don’t like that the titan powers are just gone but I do believe that this is a completely new way of thinking compared to how I felt when I first began following this series. Even when you look at Chapter 0 and how that all played out. Even if it was just a rough draft there was still so much more detail and concept within that one chapter that hinted at what was to come. That conflict really is inevitable. And if you aren’t sure what I mean then you should definitely take what we all know now of the ending concepts and go read Chapter 0. Even though it’s hardly ever talked about it’s still a simple way to see just how easily and quick to react of how conflict will always occur. He died, so she avenged him. (Okay rant over lol)

Personally I like to interpret the ending as since Eren had the Spinal Creature last and died with it, his grave is now the new location for that creature especially with the tree similarity. It’s also entirely possible when Ymir came across the tree something similar also happened and the story of the Spinal Creature continues forever.

The whole collective consciousness thing in Eren's case wasn't like some sort of multiple Erens in one body. It was implied to be more like enlightenment. Kind of like how Thanos described that he and Tony Stark had "the burden of knowledge", except that Eren can also visualize that knowledge in his mind. He can see the future clearly and how things will fall into place as well as feel it in a real sense. It's like knowing it will destroy the world but also knowing you have to press the nuke button yourself anyways or else mankind won't survive. That moment about Mikasa is Eren finally being able to let out at least a tiny bit of what he actually is, a young man in love. His dreams of freedom have already been destroyed by his realizations of what he has to do. Even so, he was able to stay the least bit human in the end unlike the others who got the power of knowledge and lost their minds in it completely. He was able to get back what little he had left of his youth in that awkward moment that he never got to have throughout the whole story since he was being dragged all over by the events. And as his moment of true maturity, Eren was able to entrust the goal of finding freedom to his friends. Not the same childish yelling for freedom entitlement, but the actual striving for freedom knowing fully well that it will be an insurmountable task.

The fact that Mikasa reached a point where she welcomed the prospect of having a family after facing so much trauma and loss and was able to build a loving family who's shown to be there for her in even matters of the past is so nice. Her story started with her witnessing the murder of her parents and ever since she's lost more family and friends and has always been fighting, fighting to protect & then finally making the ultimate sacrifice by choosing to be the one to kill Eren, her last family. The fact that she lived a long life experiencing everything while choosing not forget the one who passed away makes me so emo. Not "moving on" from loved ones who passed away since there's no need to move on from that, everyone is unique and irreplaceable, her parents were irreplaceable but she still came to see Carla, grisha & Eren as family, the same way Eren is also irreplaceable to her even after death and at the same time she met and loved more people in life who're irreplaceable too. Moving forward from LOSS, to see the beauty in life, while also feeling the grief of what's lost. That's such a complex notion and beautiful character.

Yes, Eren did commit mass genocide but Armin can also understand why he did it. He can also understand that if it wasn’t for Eren doing this, Paradis would have stood no chance at all. That is why Armin was all for the rumbling when it came to a test run. He understood that something needed to be done. He would never want to kill most of the world himself but it doesn’t mean he can’t see the benefits of it in the long run. Let alone the fact that Armin had been wondering how Eren was feeling for so long and finally Eren was telling him exactly how he felt and what he was going through. The whole point of story is learning to understand peoples ideologies and fears. Armin is the best example of how people should be and in the end with him forgiving Eren and understanding him, shows that perfectly. Yea you might have reacted the same while somebody might react exactly the same. People are different and I can understand your position on it and I can also understand somebody who is on the opposite spectrum. I might not agree but I can understand and it’s always great to hear someone out.

Why are so many people either forgetting or just plain missing the fact that Eren himself said none of this was his plan? He didn't want this. He himself said it was all the work of Ymir, shown to him when he kissed Historia's hand. He just followed the path Ymir laid out cuz it was the only option, n something he had to do. Ymir forced Eren down this path, he didn't choose it himself. Everyone seems to have just glanced over that part. Or maybe, I guess it could be easy to misinterpret. Finally got around to watching this vid, but honestly it's just extremely hard to end an amazing story. Personally I think a "perfect" ending for a great show would leave you feeling neutral, neither satisfied nor dissatisfied. Just an ending that doesn't take away or diminish the sacrifices and hardships that the characters have experienced. Considering the other two outcomes, that being leaving you wanting more or leaving you mad and bitter. While yeah the aot ending leans more towards the latter of those two, it definitely isn't as bad as many other show/series have left their fans

Eren was able to garuntee his friends “long happy lives” but ultimately human conflict will never end wether he wiped out 100% or just 80%. For me Mikasa's perspective on Ymir added so much depth and complexity to everything. Eren had said, "I cannot claim to understand the depth of ymir's heart" so we couldn't understand Ymir but with this added page Mikasa understood. Just how she's herself and all of the eldians that were born, all of the characters that we came to love only existed because of what Ymir went through. Even someone like Ymir, who had only suffered and caused suffering made possible the life of millions after her. It showed how what she truly regretted was all in that ONE moment where the king could've died and she could've been there for her children whom she deeply loved and regretted not being there for.

This the realist review of the ending. Thanks for this. The ending wasn’t perfect but I appreciate it for what it was. And when it comes to popular shows like Aot it is pretty much impossible to find an ending that satisfies EVERYONE, because everyone would want something different. Also a question. Have you heard of Attack of Titan Requiem? It’s a fan project that’s basically redoing the ending. This question is basically for you and anyone in the comment section, what do you guys think of it? I just wanna hear your personal thoughts if you heard of it.

The nature : open for interpretation of any story is planted to have more and more discusions and ultimately give birth to new stories. Answering all the questions will close the loop in a dead end. About the new added pages, as pixis once told : there will be conflicts until only one human is left, which I think is really basic nature of human beings. Our very strength invites challenge, challenge incites conflict and conflict breeds catastrophe. Human ambition will never allow history to be progressive and a future distinct than its past. There will only be different apparant versions.

The closest I think we can come to understanding a being that exist in past, present, and future is playing an RPG game. You can go online and look up guides that explain every every choice and often times I see people comment about how they have to do things they don't think their character would due in order to get the results they want or picking the lesser of two evils. Not only are you stuck within the confines of the game rules just like such a being is confined by the world and people in it. After all they maybe able to do anything with their actions but they can't guarantee other people will behave the way they want. But also the way you both inhabit the character but also aren't the character cause you see things beyond it and the workings of the world different from the characters inside it. Like you might be thinking on how your interactions impact the greater events shaping the story/world where as the characters you encounter are mostly concerned about their daily lives and how the events impact them.
