Eren
The final chapter of Attack on Titan was called Toward the Tree on that Hill.
This ending confirmed several interesting things about Eren Yeager's character. With the power of the founder he could literally have stopped the alliance but we now know for sure that Eren wanted to ensure his friends defeated him and became the saviours of humanity. It was always set in stone that Eren would lose, so even though he wanted to destroy everything and even though had the power to do it, he had to let to let them beat him because the future cannot be changed.
That same logic about not changing the future is the same reason why Eren used the founding titan to make sure his mother was eaten. When Eren kissed Historia’s hand, he saw memories from both the past and future and one of those memories is of Bertolt.... On the day the warriors attacked wall Maria, the Dina Fritz titan approached Bertolt but did not eat him. Eren used his time transcending powers to make Dina Fritz avoid eating Bertolt, as if he had died that would’ve seriously messed up the timeline. Not only that, but he then made Dina go in the direction of his mother so that she could be eaten, and this was necessary to give past Eren the anger he needed to this point in the future.
Now, moving on to Eren's PATHS conversation with Armin.. their talk began in the paths realm where both of them where just kids sitting in Shiganshina. This is the same riverbank where Armin first told Eren about the outside world, including flaming water, frozen earth, plains of sand and oceans. As their conversation continues, both of them progressively get older, whilst Eren uses the paths to show his friend the different locations from Armin's grandfathers book.
While we saw his talk with Armin at the beginning of the finale, I believe we already saw Eren’s conversation with Mikasa in the penultimate chapter. In this vision the two of them happily lived together in the mountains, and the idea is that this is what life would’ve been like if Mikasa had made a different choice back then. Mikasa previously wondered what would’ve happened if she made a different choice, so Eren created a reality in paths where they could live out those final years and let her see what it could’ve been like. When he visited Armin, he showed him a world filled with the epic landscapes they talked about when they were kids, so it means that for each person Eren spoke to, he used his powers to show the person something relevant to them.
We know for a fact that time passes differently in paths, I mean zeke even said he felt like he was in there for years when in reality it had been a second in the real world.
Next up, now that the titans are no longer a thing, life couldn't get better for the warriors of Marley. Gabi wanted to inherit the armoured titan so badly, since she thought being a warrior was the only way to prove she was a good eldian. As a regular human she no longer has to prove anything to anyone, and can live a long full life just like Falco wanted all along. Pieck is another warrior who greatly benefited, cause the main thing she wanted to show her father that eldians have a bright future, which they now do thanks to this curse finally being lifted. Annie and Reiner get their parents back after being turned into pure titans and the same can be said for Connie who has been waiting for his mother to transform back for years now.

I think the opposite, the ending is usually very determinant in how a story will be remembered ... Game of thrones was a masterpiece until season 5, an excellent series up to 7 and only season eight ruined everything. Now, you see people remembering GOT as an amazing series or as a painful reminder and a lesson in what not do at the end of any story?

I have a problem with what isayama is going for in this ending tbh. Wouldnt the alternate timeline thing with mikasa conflict with eren not being able to change the future? The point of eren doing all of this is because he is a slave to the founder/ymir. And different timelines on attack on titan doesn't exist because they must always follow that one future thats laid out to them. Thats why eren had to kill his mom so that the future events can take place. Having an actual different timeline/dimension where mikasa and eren live happily together would conflict with the idea that the future is set in stone and you cannot change it.

  • @arthuraguirrejr.9500

    @arthuraguirrejr.9500

@@toragic3432 that timeline was not a potential reality. I think we shouldn’t be calling it a timeline tbh. Rather it was like a simulation I guess? Remember Eren has the founder so he can manipulate anything. He was talking with everyone (although it wasn’t shown) and showing them something different. But he always knew he couldn’t actually change it as Turtle Quirk mentioned.

What about protecting his friends? He said he'd never gamble the future of Paradis so he can be sure his friends are safe, but that's far from what actually happened. What about Protecting Paradis? We don't even know if they are more safe now, at least they used to have walls and titan shifters but now? 20% of the world is still A LOT more than Paradis. What about completing the rumbling? Has he always been in a facade of a facade? Doesn't make that much sense. Yes he had a facade in the WfP arc so he could keep his friends away from him but that was in order for them to not have guilt over him doing the rumbling. We've already seen the real Eren in chapter 131, he felt a lot of remorse but he still knew that he had to end it all, both because of his selfish and selfless desires. We never had a foreshadowing of the Lelouch plan expect Reiner thinking it as a possibility, but at that point they weren't as similar as Eren said initially. The only message I got from this ending was "everyone is a slave to something", which is basic af and contradicts all of Eren's actions since CHAPTER 1, and the one being... "wars will never end no matter what"? That's even more basic. I'll never be able to enjoy again rewatching these series, since all of it was meaningless anyway. Eren's character was eviscerated from all the sides

Chad Eren was the best Eren but what made him the best is that we knew while he had matured, deep down we knew he wasn’t this cold, calculated super villain and was doing all of this for a reason and had to keep pushing himself forward to accomplish a specific outcome. Once that was done he didn’t have to be that person anymore, a person he never wanted to become in the first place.

It should’ve been few more chapters so that we could get more details on Ymir’s relationship with Fritz. It basically was just one line in the chapter it should’ve been more. And erens final reveal should’ve been more fleshed out with probably more foreshadowing along with having a more obvious portrayal of Eren being into Mikasa. It was too subtle. Ppl saying it ruins erens character but it doesn’t. You can have this same ending but more fleshed out with more dialogue and chapters. I hope the anime does a better job at this

@@kekbin1697 you were blind to read to let me explain, the bird has always been foreshadowed and we all thought it was because of falco or because it represents freedom. Which it does but little did we know that it was actually Eren now I’m not sure if Eren recarrnated as a bird or he controls it but either way it makes sense. In the anime it’s been foreshadowed in the beginning of ep 1 and the ova where Eren & Mikasa were on a different team & were training outside the inner wall, but it's unsafe because there are thieves in the area that ova I forgot which one but anyways there was a scene where Mikasa felt someone was watching her. And when she turned it was a bird now it isn’t just a bird but a Parasitic Jaeger. Now it makes scene actually be him from the future checking in on her to make sure she's safe. The ending of chp139 the bird that wrap M scarf was a Parasitic Jaeger. I feel like Eren is not in the literally sense dead and even if he did reincarnate into the bird he would have no recollection of his past life but just like in this scene Eren seems to have a connection to these birds and birds don't just go wrapping scarfs

Lol so you’re co-signing women suffering with Stockholm syndrome, mass genocide, and crippling your own people? Yeah a pretty fucked up world. Isayama just pretty much recreated the alternate universe for the Holocaust where the suffering didn’t stop with a sprinkle of women being helpless lol. I mean fuck it though it was a good 10 years and a couple months till those last few chapters. Not a great message for the people.

I still don’t think this was the best outcome. To make a world where everyone is a slave to destiny, you have to do it in a way where the characters don’t become plot devices and I think AoT fell victim to this. Even eren said he doesn’t know why he did it and Armin thanked him for causing a mass genocide for their sake. I think all the development that the characters had was sort of erased and also the women, characters that Isayama was praised for, were reduced to damsels and plot devices. I believe that the original ending was retconned to this and there was an original plan, but after AoT blew up, they went the more bittersweet route instead.

@Ricardo Simões Eren just felt as though he indirectly killed her by not stepping in, but to me that makes sense. By the time he ends up in the paths he had already come to terms with his mothers death and altering this specific event could have had a knock on effect that ends with all of his friends and him dying as the only future he saw for absolute certain was the one where all of these events take place and this ending is the only one he saw. So rather than betting on something he knew literally nothing about, he chose to not change it, he didn't HAVE to go along with it but chose to become a slave to his vision of the future to ensure this outcome was the one they got, he even sacrificed his own freedom for those he loved.

I believe the bird wrapping the scarf on Mikasa, when she wished to see Eren, signified that Eren still exists somewhere. Isayama purposely ended the chapter at 139 because in numerology terms it represents the end of a cycle and beginning of a new, i.e curse of Ymir ending and Eren dying as a slave to destiny. Isayama left an open ending with chapter 139 because if 140 chapter exists that would mean that Eren is no longer a slave of destiny and is finally free and alive because 140 signifies free will and freedom. So, if the story continues any further, we will find out that Eren was alive and finally gets to meet Mikasa.

I think Eren may have used the Founding Titan's powers to implant "desirable" dreams to his friends like the one in Mikasa. Her dream - living peacefully with Eren in the mountains. This was to have them make decisions that would push them towards that one path that ultimately leads to his end. Recall Jean's dream that showed his inner desires - a wife (that looked like Mikasa), a family, a progressive life in a place (that looked like an upscale district in Paradis in some sense), just worrying about wine and real estate... there's no way that Eren was not the one who planted this dream in him.

@@vladimirbucur6265 The colossal titans in the walls are different from the 9 Titan shifters that come from Ymir’s original titan. The colossal titans in the walls were made by King Karl Fritz using the power of the Founding Titan - they’re not titan shifters like Armin’s colossal. Hope that helps:)

I personally loved the ending and thought it was sad/beautiful. The only thing I would disagree with you on was how erens outburst about mikasa to armin was out of character. Eren has always been prone to emotional outbursts and I felt like we were seeing the true him again. He was a 19 y/o who was afraid to die and just wanted to be with the person he loves and their friends. Like armin said he was alone for so long and the outburst was him finally letting how he felt out in his last moments. One point I really appreciated you bring up though was how the alternate reality in the paths with eren and mikasa running away actually happened. I keep seeing people misinterpret it and think it was a Mikasa fantasy or just a shared dream they had, but it was reality. I think it was really heartbreaking to see that eren loved mikasa so much he would throw away everything he had done to spend the last couple years of his life with her. I shipped them from the start and I think the people who didn't see that eren clearly always loved mikasa back were not paying attention.
