ATLA PALANI EDH COMMANDER DECK TECH

Ойындар

In this video, I give you the COMMANDER INSIGHT on a NAYA color commander that seems to fly under the radar. Atla Palani and her eggs. This deck is all about cheating out big creatures with an element of randomness. It's the perfect balance of strong and fun! The effect is unique and requires a certain strategy to succeed.

    One interesting build I've seen is actually only running like 3 creatures in the entire deck, and having them form an infinite loop/combo. I can't remember what they were, but basically, by having so few creatures in your deck, it won't take long to pull the combo and win. Great video btw!

    Thank you I appreciate it! Yes i have heard of something similar. It also gives you a ton of room to run redundancy effects to set up like haste enablers and sac oulets. I may try it sometime, but to me it seems like a strategy like that would get stale quickly for me because it would be the same result every time and the way I play is more on the casual side. I love the surprise effect of "what is it going to be?!"

    I actually have someone in my local playgroup who's ran an Atla deck with that 3 creature situation. The only creatures in the deck are Mirror Entity, Xenagos, and Blightsteel Colossus. Mirror Entity's there to get eggs going even faster, and you can see where the other two fit in. We call it mono-Blightsteel for good reason.

    That's interesting! Do they win a lot? Blightsteel would only be able to take out 1 opponent per turn right? Guaranteed with a Xenagos trigger on him

    It's a cool deck for sure, but it's also probably north of $1000 in price just based on all those ridiculous dragons and eldrazi you're running. For people watching who are more budget friendly like me definitely use Etali, Elvish, Broodmother, Samut & Zacama in this deck. Some budget creature options to pair with those: Artisan of Kozelik, Pathrazer Ulamog, Adarkar Valkyrie, Archetype of Endurance, Apex Altisaur, Ghalta, Kodama of the East Tree, Kogla, Silverclad Ferocidons, Skyline Despot, Mayael the Anima, Brash Taunter, Maurading Raptor, Thorn Mammoth, Aggressive Mammoth, Rienne, Angel of Rebirth, etc. etc. Aside from the 5 I mentioned above which I think are essential to the deck, there really isn't a reason you can't fill out the rest of your creatures with say $30. Here's my thoughts having run my own Atla deck for awhile: Smothering Tithe is an awesome card no doubt, but unless you're playing an opponent who card draws a lot or is mana pinched it's a bit overrated for almost $30. At that price I just decided to run Goldspan Dragon, Bootleggers Stash and Jolene, the Plunder Queen for what amounted to about $10 more in price. Those plus Anointed or Doubling Season gets out of hand really quick. Definitely run Tithe in tournaments in traditional commander formats, but my play group does more 1v1 or 2v2 which significantly nerfs Tithe. Also, budget players consider monologue tax which can give you treasures for 1/10th the price of Tithe. It might good to have a few more outlets for killing eggs besides sac'ing creatures. My play group has started running cards that prevent you from sac'ing creatures (3 people have Atla decks, myself included lol). You do have Terror of the Peaks, but that's a $35 card lol. Brash Taunter accomplishes it while also being annoying to your opponents should you start to fight big creatures and ping them for damage. Maurading Raptor is great and lowers your spell costs. Thorn Mammoth may be my favorite because you have Atla create an egg then fight it immediately, or if you need something dead you can have Atla create an egg each turn and kill your opponents creatures. Setessan Tactics is great as a pseudo-board wipe option while also letting you use it in a pinch to fight a couple of eggs to get creatures out should your opponents have board presence. Also, no Warstorm Surge? If you're cheating in creatures this big it's essential. It can be another egg killer too. Also, you have to run Skullclamp with this commander. It's the only absolute must card. I don't like oath of druids in this deck. It's too group huggy for me and it caps your ceiling. There's no guarantee your opponents aren't also running strong creatures, and if you do get ahead on board presence then you're nerfing yourself because even if your creatures are better, your opponent still has stuff coming out and for free. By the time its served you you have to blow it up. If you're not concerned about budget, Defense of the Hearts is way better. It's DEFINITELY going to make your opponents think twice about putting out a lot of board presence because they know if you can tutor out 2 creatures it'll turn the game. I've never lost a game I've been able to run Defense's ability (it's rare and almost an instant kill at my table). Not sure how this deck plays for you, but the obvious weakness in my opinion is your lack of protection for Atla. I think I saw only 2-3 hexproof/indestructible things aside from some creatures that provide different measures of protection. You've got all the creatures anyone could desire to run this deck, but without Atla it's like owning a Ferrari with no gas to run it. And yeah, you've got Piper, Natural Order, Oath, etc. to cheat in creatures (should include Kodama of the East though), but those are tertiary in your deck. As your opponent, I'm gonna dedicate everything to making Atla uncastable as soon as she comes out and make you either draw into that 5-10% that can cheat things in or hard cast all those scary monsters. There's so many 1 drop green instants that give hexproof and/or indestructible you can use which will bait your opponents into wasting their removal on Atla while ignoring all those creatures you're bringing out. With creatures included, I have like 15% of my deck dedicated to protecting Atla. You should definitely drop makeshift munitions and spawning pit for Fanatical Devotion and Martyr's Cause. Gives you those sac outlets while also letting you protect Atla. 2/2 creatures and pinging things for 1 do little for this deck in comparison. Why no Changelings? It's a good way to get some lower CMC creatures out against speed decks & gives you more "eggs". Even if you run into them running Atla's ability, 90% of the time it's because you're using free sac outlets anyway so you can just wash, rinse, repeat until you land a bigger creature. But these Changeling's are essential to my deck because of my win cons: Harsh Mercy and Kindred Summons. You'll notice a theme here: I like flexibility of cards. Harsh is another pseudo-board wipe in a pinch; unless playing tribal decks then it's likely leaving everyone with 1-2 creatures. In the best scenario you protect Atla and blow up everything (including eggs and Changeling) and are now running multiple instances of Atla's ability. Flips a board immediately. Kindred is cool because if you have 2-3 changeling's out then you can run it and grab more Dinosaur's/Dragon's if you're choosing that type. Or, if you only have a few eggs out then it'll still fetch you Changeling's. Now your board is full of cannon fodder for your opponents literally rendering them unable to attack. Also, I only have one other shaman (Piper) and two humans (Samut & Jolene), so if I need to tutor into those for any reason I can just choose one of those if Atla's out and put them on the battlefield (flexibility). Cool cards, but truthfully I think this deck runs better for cheaper in relation to some cards. Anyway, hope this helps!

    A lot to unpack here… thanks for the detailed comment… you can tell you’ve played Atla a lot and know the ins and outs of the deck. First thing I’ll say is there is another video with a deck tech update on this deck that may take some of what you said into account already. For example the updated deck has a skullclamp, defense of the heart and such. This is not a budget deck so I appreciate you mentioning budget cards for those who may be looking for it. Many of these cards have just been in my collection and I committed them to this deck. The best part of Atla is that you really can just throw any cool creatures you like into it you don’t need a specific style or type. There is a cool strategy I’ve seen where every game you separate all our creatures and put them in a bigger pile of about 50 and then randomly pick X amount to put in the deck facedown so its even a surprise for you as to what you can get. Keeps the deck fresh and fun. Less competitive of course. You say smothering tithe is too expensive but most of the cards you named instead equate to more dollars. Goldspan is like $25 and the others are $10+ each. Especially the token doublers. At least when I looked last. Regardless, I still think smothering tithe is amazing in this deck. I agree its all based on your playgroup. My group does mainly 4player FFA so its definitely worth it. My biggest realization from this video to the updated one is that I needed more ways to kill eggs. No one will attack you on the ground in a Atla deck so we gotta kill our own creatures. I run redundant cards with the effect strictly in my artifacts and enchantments to sacrifice creatures. I do this because creatures are the randomness in this deck and you cant rely on them when coming from the deck. For consistency you don’t want a lot of creatures that help you further progress your board you want the creatures to be the be-all-end-all. When an egg dies, anything that comes out is scary and a giant threat. I think I run 3-4 creatures that aren’t and it still feels bad when you need a big beater and get an elvish piper. So due to that I try and stick to sacrifice effects on permanents but creatures. Also how many different cards are there in the game that prevent you from sacrificing? I can think of like 2 or 3 and not a single person in my playgroup runs any of them. Obviously that’s different for you which makes sense why you’ve changed it up but I feel most people wont encounter that and therefore shouldn’t build around the exception. Or just stock up on generic targeted removal like beast within and such so you can take care of the niche card when you see it. But I needed more redundancy because having atla out and an army of eggs you cant kill isn’t fun either. Warstorm surge is a lesser version of terror of the peaks so I didn’t put it in because I have the dragon and the avatar for when stuff leaves the field too Oath of druids is a controversial card you are right. I believe it comes down to your playgroup again. It can easily be taken out and have the deck function the same. I win most games I get it off more than once. Yes the downside is your opponents get it too but because of the creature build in this deck, it really is rare that someone else has better creatures than me. And if they do, that’s great because now im not the biggest threat and while we all gang up on the biggest threat I can keep dropping fatties without even being the main target. I also run a few ways to pop it myself in case. Defense of the heart is in the deck too from the update. Great card for sure. Protection was also a thing I was lacking. I added in a couple cards in the update and I may need to look into some more. Its still a tough thing to do even with more protection cards, there is always the chance you don’t draw them or cant cast them while still doing everything you need. I wasn’t a fan of the changeling builds. I know the mirror entity is incredible and a win con so I may find a spot for that. Changelings are just place holders for another creature and id rather just have the other creature so I can run more variety of big guys. Kindred is good in the right decks but too high cmc for me in this type of deck. Unless maskwood nexus is out the tribal effect won’t get me much even with a few changelings in the deck. Overall I think you made some good points and advice for people who are looking for a cheaper build to the deck or want to take atla in a certain direction. Playing 2 headed giant or 1v1 changes everything and I don’t personally do that often so my cards aren’t built around that. • @commanderinsight

    @commanderinsight

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey So thats an awesome recommendation, I had thornbite staff in the deck but took it out. It is a great card no doubt. My reasoning behind that was that the deck is designed to get Atla Palani out early and as fast as possible. The problem I kept having with the staff is that unless you drew it in your opening hand or turn 1-2, it costs 6 mana to bring it out and equip to your commander. I always would draw it later in the game when she was already out and i wanted to spend 6 mana on other more important things. You are right that it basically is infinite with ashnod's altar, but it was also rare that I ended up with both in a game. Remember that atla palani's effect puts all non-creature cards it reveals to the bottom of the deck so one of those 2 artifacts would usually end up on the bottom of my deck that way and with no way to search them (maybe gamble). however if you build around it more maybe by adding in equipment search cards and can get the free equip effect by having it out before Atla Palani hits, it can be a really good way to pull a ton of creatures from your deck. The number 1 thing i think this deck needs out to function above all else is a sac outlet so this could be a pseduo one by pinging your eggs. I pulled the combo off a few times, but more often then not when i would draw it, it was a dead card or too expensive to play.
