Loved this album. Actually, I loved all ATDI albums. It's rare to see someone reacting to them these days! This band was hugely influential.

Love at the Drive-In, they were fun to see in concert and definitely reminds me of my teens and early-20s. A little Fugazi and Archers of Loaf.

Great snapshot in time, great album. I think i must have listened to it over 10 times the day a bought it on cd. I then found fugazi 10 years later and the influence was clear. Keep up the good work.

MC5 for sure. I am a huge ATDI fan and had never put the MC5 connection together until watching the live performance of Kick out the Jams in 1970 in NY i think.

This band changed a lot things. I honestly think they were gonna change music similar to Nirvana, but they called it quits. The technical ability of this band was better than than bands that inspired them.

Funny that the stooges were mentioned… Iggy Pop was present during the studio sessions when they recorded the album that one-armed scissor was on. He even tracked some of his vocals on a tune called Rolodex Propaganda. It’s a great tune. Definitely worth a listen.

Band ended up breaking into two bands, the mars volta and sparta. Also worth a listen.

Telegram switches were sometimes called "one armed scissors" back in the day. Mix that with the lyrics. You'll see these are the last words of an astronaut sending his dying words through Morse code.

Gotta agree man, Cedric’s voice first reminded me of Zakk too, but a Zakk that can actually sing and not just spitting (no disrespect to RATM intended, love them to death)

So glad you reacted to this. One of the illest rock songs. I remember listening to this in my gfs car at the time and she was like "I can't believe you listen to this" haha. Can you please react to Innervision by System of a Down and The Sweets by Yeah Yeah Yeahs?

Thank you so much for stopping in and giving this reaction a view. We appreciate you! I (Andy) am familiar with both tracks and Jon is familiar with the The Sweets, but not Innervision. We have added it to our list. Thanks again!

10:48 "...bits about kissing the asphalt, and some other shite..." That "shite" is another human pouring his Soul out, just fyi. "They hibernate But have they kissed the ground Pucker up and kiss the asphalt now" This verse is an intended sarcasm. The entire band seems to hate being on the road, constantly touring. The song is about the alienation of life on the road. Pretty obvious with even just a modicum of literary insight.

One armed scissor is a guitar. They are sending transmissions through the guitars. The vultures are waiting... the crowd. The song is about their journey as a band. Also... Checkout the guy that sings the "Cut away..." part. That's Jim Ward that went on to do Sparta. For me, he's the heart and soul of ATDI. Without him, ATDI is just Mars Volta w/o the long jams.

Thanks for the comment! I had never heard that explanation of the phrase “one armed scissor” and I have heard a bunch of them. I like it. Did you read that from an interview or some other source? I would love to give that a read. And yeah, Ward’s work with Sparta is great stuff. Thanks again. - Andy

If you like this song / At The Drive-In, you should check out Drive Like Jehu. Cedric, the lead singer of ATDI, specifically called them out numerous times in interviews as being hugely influential to the band's sound. Chaotic but tight, emotional, aggressive, lots of distortion and technical riffing. DLJ was from San Diego, and they helped define the "San Diego sound", along with other hardcore/early post-hardcore bands like Heroin, Unbroken, and Swing Kids.

I enjoyed it, missed it at the time, only heard The Mars Volta before which is not to my taste, having that prog-metal sound.

I remember them tearing it up on Jools Holland with this tune. An absolute belter, and a real pity they went all self-importantly prog-metal after this.

Hey guys, if you want to live up to the name of your channel, you need to change something about your recording/mixing process. Your voices are fairly quiet while the song is almost blaring.
