Astronomers capture first image of black hole at center of Milky Way, now what?

Ғылым және технология

Astronomers captured the first image of the black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
The "historic breakthrough" offers an unprecedented look at the supermassive object driving the evolution of our galaxy. I was able to speak with Harvard astronomer Jonathan McDowell about this EXCITING development. I also was able to get a dang microphone for making my videos! So much excitement in one video!

You look great and are always immaculately turned out. You should be close to the camera to get your money's worth ;) Seriously though this is an incredible moment for science. The technical challenge of capturing an image like that is absolutely massive. What a time to be alive!

19 or 20 years ago, near my admin's office in my university, I saw a corridor-posted piece of paper displaying updated (to that date) stellar trajectories near this black hole. No fancy graphics. Just shown trajectory arcs, each crossed-marked with annual location data. Emerging clues. No complete orbits yet amassed, at that time, but some about 70% revealed. I had goosebumps upon goosebumps, gazing on that piece of paper for about 5 minutes. NOW... with all this update, I'm even more emotionally loaded. Thanks, Elle, for this detailed interview!

Jonathan is such a great teacher. He has me hanging on every word. Thanks for bringing him to us again, Ellie. Those images of Sag A Star are just mind-blowing. Let's position some radio telescopes in orbit around the sun beyond Neptune's orbit, eh? If an Earth-wide virtual telescope got us these great images, how much better could they be with a virtual solar system wide telescope? Starship will be operational for missions like this in a couple of years, hopefully. What astronomer would hate working on a scope design for missions like that?

What continues to frustrate me about the whole science of Black Holes is that, if we want to be technical, the picture shown of SAG A Star isn't actually a picture of a Black Hole. As Dr McDowell noted, It's a picture of the space just outside of the Event Horizon of SAG A Star. Since a Black Hole, based on our limited understanding, has a gravitational pull so great that even light cannot escape it, the location where we'd expect to see SAG A Star in the center of the picture is nothing more than a black spot in space. No definition. No contours. Just black. In 100 years our technology may be adequate to take a more accurate picture of a black hole. Unfortunately, I'll never get to see it.

That is nice. Compatibility Ellie got a mikeeee phone. Congrats. The volume is a little loud , turn it down just a bit I got the slider all the way down and you are loud. just a minor adjustment. Hi Johnathan - Start with back in the day: When I started and black holes were tiny and so was I. Ha come on When the world was young and so was I. Yup we are that old. Neigh on ancient. Are you going to show the picture of the reverse black hole that is ejecting matter? Going over to: The other side? To the dark side of the force? Stars wizzing. Ahhhh relief from pain other than headache. 7:03 back in the 80' is that like 1580's I should quit poking the Astrophysicist (14) what do you know we have a winner. So what are we looking at my friend? The End. 13:25 Mr. McDowell it is a little freaky when you do that. I was talking about the bitter end, the end of the story, the end of it all. I suspect we end up with a singularity and the story begins again. Can we have a big bang inside a big bang? Grapes on a vine - What I am waiting for is the wine. When will you point JWST at this "monster in the middle?" 27,000 years ago Talk about old news. Black holes are dead pixels in the galaxy? Super massive black hole (oh crap I dropped the phone and ran over it with the truck.) sobbing. Stop there is no gravity. The Earth sucks, ha ha black holes suck. Stop. Better pissed off than pissed on. Though some , never mind. Jonathan you are always fun to listen to and we learn something new in the process. Thank you. So what is the connection between the CERN particle accelerator and the creation / life of our galaxy, universe? Are we but a mote in God's eye? Is all the history of Earth but a blink. What do you think? Ellie you do a nice job of cross crafting. The twitter and KZread connection. Wish I could go with you. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. You know that you are in trouble when the light at the end of the tunnel turns out to be the headlight of an oncoming train.

Jesus, Light of the world. John 14: 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) *said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent Me. Romans 6: 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
