When the heavens and MIT align

Ғылым және технология

Twice a year, in January and November, the setting sun aligns perfectly with MIT’s 825-foot-long Infinite Corridor. Planetary scientist Richard Binzel describes MIThenge as “a major cultural moment on campus … when the heavens and MIT seem to align.”

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, technology, humanities and social sciences; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place.
The MIT KZread channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

As long as the Infinite Corridor, or any structure for that matter, aligns within a certain directional range, there will be two days a year where the sun lines up. This isn't an unusual phenomena, nor was this the intent of the schools layout. New York City has Manhattanhenge every year in May and again in July, where the sunset is directly in line with the numbered streets. It's just the general nature of the Sun's drift relative to the Earth's horizon during orbit. I wonder when this became a "thing", since it was never this big of a deal when I was there. I mostly remember a couple of days per year when it was really annoying walking back to the dorms after class because the sun was shining in your eyes the entire way, but back then I was also a cranky, overworked, sleep-deprived student. I like how they are celebrating it now, because it gives you something to anticipate instead. I also like how they recommend the third floor, because it is usually empty and the crowds of students there won't block the students needing to get to somewhere else on the main floor.

825 feet == 251.46 meter. I kind request to our US friends overseas; Could you at least just pick a single unit system rather than expressing so many things in more than one unit. Use yards. It is super close to meters; 1 yard is almost 1 meter. Then you can add metric multipliers, most of which you already know from bytes on computers. 1 kilo yard per hour is almost 1 kilometer per hour. 1 centiyard is a almost 1 centimeter. Just pick one. Preferably yards.

Blessing ceremonies imbuing another generation with the ethereal glow of professional management class to go forth and preach the de-skilling of America. Every single Boomer I know paid pennies for their PhD and thinks nothing of debt burdens on kids today. I say bust Big U and make every Ivy Cadre break up and establish branches across all states opening doors to the willing and making Legacy the very last candidates. We see what several decades of PMC enabling the opportunity-hoarding sociopaths and their dominance games has done as we watch the Sixth Great Extinction. American lives are shorter and Europeans’ taller: why? Elites tolerate savants of PMC, who believe they rise on merit, but find over and over the corner spot always gets filled with Legacy before word of opening even spreads.
