Aston Martin DBS - Busting the Porsche 997 Turbo S Myth!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

All my friends are fanatical about Porsche, I love it too.. BUT there is more to cars than just sticking with one make. Other cars have lots to offer too. Here I make my case on why if you have £80K you should consider this Aston Martin DBS as a much more interesting alternative!
Tried captions for the first time, don't want them to show up by default though.. can you let me know if you're seeing them?

I had a DBS Volante and as a GT car it was stunning. I did a 2,500 mile European road trip in 2018 and it delivered in spades. Rewarding to drive, easy to cover big miles without having all your bones and joints ache, it is stunning to look at, the V12 sounds glorious and it was 100% reliable.

i did the same swap back in 2017, swapped my 997.1 turbo for an auto dbs just like this one. (best decision ever) the keyword out of this entire video is reward, this car is a reward to drive, unlike the daily usability of the 911

I had a gen 1 997 turbo. Agree with your analysis completely. Might have held on to it if it was a manual, but it was a tip, which was not as exciting to drive. No matter how much power a car has, one eventually gets used to it. Takes something extra to make one want to keep a car long term.

In my eyes the DBS is a timeless, elegant car and the gorgeous sound of the V12 engine is sending shivers down my spine. Pretty much the last chance to get one , since the V12s are very likely to be the first fuel-burning engines to die out in the near future. In terms of performance not a snowball's chance in hell against the Porsche (especially on a track) , but, as you mentioned , that's probably not the point anyway, if you fancy buying an Aston, since this is rather a classic GT and a gentleman driver's car than a sheer sportscar. Which one to choose? Hard decision, they are so very different but adorable in their own right. The alternatives you presented would not be an option for me though.

Hi Jack, I had a 2007 DB9 Manual, which is the softer version of the DBS and now own a 2008 997.1 Turbo manual. Both with around 25kmiles on the clock. I have to say the Turbo is the much much better car in many means. I love the tight cabin, and the kids seats fit only in the Turbo, not the DB9. Not to mention the real reasons like adaptive damping, better control of the car, the insane power to weight ratio and clutch durability 😅.

As much as I love the 997 911, I would take the DBS over one (being a Vantage owner, it's a natural route with slight bias). The DBS is a fabulous looking car, it won't lose much money from the current values (as you've alluded to) and it's a lot less obvious. The Merc (also a Merc owner/fan here) is a great car, but it really is an awkward looking thing from the front. The Ferrari California, I've driven one and thought it was pretty good actually, just not their prettiest effort. Then there's the I8, yup, totally oddball! It's more of a flashy white good than a car with any soul. Despite its performance and the fact that it's a decent machine, I could never get over the fact that the ICE portion of its power train was a 1500cc 3-cylinder. All the noise it makes in the cabin is artificial. They're very interesting cars, but they don't seem to have any soul. Re: 2 Mondeo V6 engines welded together; the only engine-related thing it shares with the V6 Mondeo is the design of the combustion chamber itself which is the same, that's it. Everything else is completely different. I think it was Chris Harris' drive of the Vulcan that got everyone discussing this following a comment he made about them being 'welded together' which is essentially what the V8 engine is/was in Triumph's Stag (2 Dolomite engines sharing the same crank and block). This is totally different. Great review, enjoyed the video!

Great car the DBS V12, but those bonnet vents look like they have been added by the local hot rodder rather than by a multi million dollar company with. They just add a slight cheapness to what is otherwise an amazingly beautiful and striking car. Another alternative albeit cheaper, is a normally aspirated 997 GTS. Not wuite as extreme as the GT3 but more character than the Turbo and steering is not numbed by AWD if you get the RWD.

When comparing different types of cars (sports cars, GT cars, etc.) it's worth mentioning that they were built for different purposes. GT cars (like the DBS) tend to be bigger, heavier, but more livable than true sports cars (like the 997). One being "Better" than the other is a matter of what the owner wants from the car. If you want something beautiful, rare and special, with an amazing sound and engaging driving experience, that's the DBS. If you want something smaller, lighter, and more sporting, get the 997. As for the comment about the V12 being "just two Ford V6s welded together," that's like saying the 997 is just a modified VW Beatle. The engine was developed in a collaboration between Ford, Porsche Engineering, and Cosworth as a V6 initially. Aston took the design to Cosworth, who used the basic architecture and created the V12 for the DB7 Vantage. Cosworth manufactured the engines for Aston Martin for the first two years, before Aston had a dedicated engine plant built on Ford's industrial estate in Cologne, Germany. The same basic design has been enhanced over the years, and in higher states of tune was featured in the Aston Martin One-77 and Vulcan.

Well said! The Porsche is like an Iphone well made, well designed but not “Special” enough. I would also add the last gen Vantage is an ever better looking car than the Db9/Dbs as its a little shorter in length. The only drawback with the Dbs or any current British car including Aston is the less than stellar reliability. No Porsche sounds as good though as any last gen Aston (Vanquish S sounds incredible!)

Just because cars share a similar price, doesn't mean they share similar driving characteristics. All the cars you're suggesting are vastly different. The DBS is a far superior GT car, but if you actually want to push a car in the canyons, on a rally, or on the track, the 997.2 Turbo S is in a different league. Frankly, many people who buy the cars on your list sell them and buy 911's.

What gives this video its most real-world quality and worthiness-of-being-taken-seriously is that mobile phone on the windscreen mount,,, NOBODY who owns/drives an Aston ever seriously uses that pop--up dashboard satnav screen as anything other than a show-off feature!!

One man’s meat is another man’s poison. It’s clear a 997 turbo s is just not for you. For many & me who has owned one for 3+ years it’s in a different class of feeling, emotion and engineering. 0-60 Aston 4.3 vs Porsche 3.1 (actual 2.9 sec) Legendary Porsche hydraulic steering feel DB9 underpinnings vs a honed 911 chassis where Porsche engineers put everything they know into a Turbo S. Depth of engineering Aston can only dream of Depreciation in the same period the Aston lost £100k vs Porsche £50k & will continue to depreciate faster than the Porsche. MPG - Aston 15mpg vs Porsche 25mpg Servicing - Aston 10k miles £800++ vs 20k miles £450 Turbo S. Reliability Aston vs Porsche CO2 - Aston 408g/km CO2. Vs Porsche 268g/kg. Porsche Turbo S last pure Porsche prior to VW ...But as long as you’re happy with your decision good luck.

Agree with a lot of what you say but you’re definitely wrong on depreciation, the Aston has done it’s share, rarity, V12, manual will ensure that it retains value bette than the numerous 997s sold! Thanks for watching!

Anyway, I still like the video, the DBS is remarkable. There are a lot of people who should stay away from 911's. For example in the plains of the US, there are no canyons, no twisty roads, everything is straight. A 911 would be pretty boring there

but of course aston rebadged the car and brought out the following model with the same engine... and called it the Virage was it? looks almost identical and is cheaper... ive driven one..and a merceded and a california. the merc and the california are amazing to drive, the mercedes is almost tooo quick, the ferrari wants you to drive it fast and is great fun, the dbs is none of that... its a cruiser, but an impact car. "De-cated"... so something that doesn't limit power and cleans up the exhaust is removed, for why? So someone thinking only of oneself can make a little more noise? What about those of us following behind that like to breathe clean air? Catalytic converters are a godsend, they gave us back the performance that was lost when clean air regulations were imposed.

Aston any day. Maybe the Merc. I8, no way, ever. Jag, no, Ferrari, probably not. Got to be the Aston. If we are totaly honest with each other, the power numbers and performance are irrelevant anyway. Firstly, whee can you use all the grunt? And, get this! I, for one could never make any of these cars go as fast as they are able. I am a very average driver, and I would be using it on the road. Any of these are so far above my capabilities it really wouldn't make any difference in the real world. So, for the event and the looks, yep, Aston Martin it is then. Thank you, you can deliver it whenever you are ready.

The myth is that the Aston is a better choice. It's looks are okay but otherwise it is completely ersatz. If it wasn't perceived as British the majority of commenters on here lauding its praises would be trashing it as a characterless souped up Mondeo - which is what it is.
