Astigmatism Vs Normal Vision In VR (Meta Quest 2)

Ғылым және технология

How does astigmatism affect your vision when playing vr? How blurry can your vision be from astigmatism in virtual reality, like when playing the oculus quest 2/meta quest 2? Dr. EyeGuy shows examples of different amounts of astigmatism.

WHAT IS DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO
Moderate and high amounts of astigmatism can have a drastic effect on the your vision, especially in VR. What does astigmatism look like vs normal vision? At what point will you need to wear glasses in VR to make your vision clearer? In this video, examples of astigmatism will be shown ranging from -1.00D to -6.00D. We will also show you examples of irregular astigmatism, which is a certain type of astigmatism you can have from certain eye conditions like keratoconus.

Hi, i have a question I ordered Vroptician lenses 2 years ago with a old prescription and haven't use the headset for a while and i want to play it again. But I just got my new prescription and the value from my last one jumped from R : -2.50 (+2.25) 90° L : -4.25 (+3.50) 85° (2019) to R : -0.50 (-2.50) 180° L : -0.25 (-3.50) 180° (2023) Is that a massive jump ? Would the difference be super obvious ? I'm asking this because I know absolutely nothing about the whole value thing and i wanna be sure I'm not wasting money on ordering new lens for barely any change.

I recently started wearing glasses full time for my astigmatism. I'd been dealing with it for a few years without correction, so having it now is a great relief, even with my mild case. The glasses gave me such relief that I decided to get inserts for my Quest 2 as well, and I can see VR much better.

-4/5 left/right eye on shortsight and -2.5 on astigmatism, Lenses are manditory for me. So glad they are available for VR. I'm just praying they don't go the same way as Drone FPV goggles. Used to have slots for lenses, now they just allow you to adjust the lens position for short sight correction but no ability for correct for astigmatism which is a huge nightmare...

I have keratoconus and very irregular astigmatism, especially in my left eye (-4.00 D). Your example of what astigmatism looks like is actually great, one of the best I’ve seen. It’s often hard to explain to others what it’s like. I just got a PSVR2, and with fresnel lenses the effect is magnified. In real life, my right eye has less astigmatism and so I use it automatically to make up for my left eye’s astigmatism. In my VR set, this doesn’t work well in many areas of the screen as things get less clear away from the centre of the lenses. So if I’m looking at an object that requires my right eye to be looking off centre, it can no longer make up for my left eye’s issues. Anyway, love your channel. Just ordered some VR Optician lens inserts based on your reviews and excited to use them, as in VR my eye glasses make an even bigger difference than in real life.

Great explanation Doc. My Dad always makes out his Quest 2 is very crisp, whereas i've never been able to get that, it's nearly always a soft focus and I have to have the headset held in a very specific position for it to be useable at all. I have a -0.75 astigmatism in my left eye, but I always use corrective contact lenses when on the quest (and basically any every day life thing), I believe my issue is more the IPD, which i'm slightly wider than the highest setting (if I remember right i'm about 72mm when measuring on apps).

  • @DrEyeGuy

    @DrEyeGuy

That would make sense if you aren't able to look through the sweet spot of the VR lenses. Also... VR lenses, especially the quest 2 has it's limitations on how clear it can be. There are so many variables to it. Thanks for the comment... you are definitely not alone with your IPD being wider than the VR lenses can adjust for.

This video makes me very hopeful. I've always dealt with a double image/blurry or feeling like is was looking through a mirage when in VR. I never once thought it could be because of my (-2.25) astigmatism, but now it makes total sense! I get annual eye exams, but I've never filled my prescription even though I should since I basically, "use the force" when I read text. But I thought since the screens were in front of your eyes (in VR), why would you need glasses? Boy, looks like I was very wrong. I ordered a pair of lens via VR Optician (with your code, thank you!) and they should be here next week...maybe? I'll update this comment with how they work for me. Fingers crossed!!!

I'm farsighted with a slight astigmatism but unexpectedly (and happily) I find that I can use VR without any corrective lenses... except: I have to look at the center of the VR lenses for the best clarity. It's very clear for me looking straight into the center, but moving only my eyes to look in another direction, the "display" is blurry. So I have to move my head rather than my eyes to read text, for example... it's not a deal breaker, but not the ideal. Do you know why this might be? (I have a Quest 2 and had a Samsung GearVR in the past). I just realized I have a similar issue with my laptop and glasses, but the focused area is much larger. I can read text across the laptop screen without moving my head and only at the edges of the screen does the text get a little blurry. I assume this is due to the prescription being centered on the lenses, but doesn't explain the lenses in the VR headset... thoughts?

I think I am about a -3.5 D but combined with near or farsightedness I can never recall which it is that I have. And now mix in bifocals since I am of that age. So I've avoided VR since I figured it was pointless for me. To give an example I am at an arm's length from my screen (1920x1200) so about 1m/3feet and without my glasses I can't read anything. With my pair of non-bifocal glasses I can't see anything *closer* than 1m from my face, with bifocal I can see close up.

Hard to say because the focal point is the same in VR, distance or near. You could be dealing with accommodative-vergence conflict, where your eyes will come closer together when you look at something up close, and cause your focusing muscle to focus when it shouldn't in VR

  • @DrEyeGuy

You actually don't want to use your reading glasses in VR. VR, meta quest 2 for example, sets their focal point out more in the distance, about 4 feet out/1.2 meters. If you have a prescription for that far out, that would be perfect. Most people find their distance prescription works better than their close up prescription.

Can anyone help me? I dont have astigmatism, but when i use vr, i see lines coming my vr screen anytime i play it. I have glasses, but they dont help with the lines i see and i usually dont use my glasses in vr only because theh fog up a lot but it is definitely blurry when i dont wear them lol. Edit: i did a test with my glasses to see if i have astigmatism and apparently i do, maybe thats why sometimes i see lines from lights and i have very blurry vision lol. Still, does anyone have any advice for me?

Mine is horribly blurry. Can’t find a doctor that takes my insurance yet. Any hacks I can do to try to see what it looks like for a normal person? So frustrating. Yeah. Stretched lights. Double vision. Red and blue around text.

Not necessarily any hacks. You can try and attempt the "pinhole" test to see if your vision improves.

Hi! So your astigmatism is 5 diopters total. The plus and minus can change depending on how the prescription is written. With that amount, it can be tricky to find some soft lenses that would be stable enough to give you adequate vision. There are custom lenses that can go that high. Or switching to A hard lens or scleral lenses may work better.
