Dr. EyeGuy explains all about astigmatism and astigmatism symptoms. Astigmatism symptoms and astigmatism treatments will be covered. Also, how you can know if you have astigmatism. Dr. Guymon will explain the meaning of the astigmatism. Some people mistake the word for stigmatism. There are two more common types of astigmatism, corneal astigmatism and lenticular astigmatism. 33% of the people in the world have astigmatism, and if you are wearing glasses or contacts, you have a 70% chance that you have astigmatism right now. Most people have regular astigmatism, but there are people that have irregular astigmatism. This is usually caused from an eye condition, like keratoconus. Certain levels of astigmatism can be treated with glasses, contacts, and surgery. Most people experience blur and light distortion. Curious, will glasses for Astigmatism correct all blurriness or just distances you choose when getting glasses?

  • @DrEyeGuy

    @DrEyeGuy

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@generalgrevous1984 Astigmatism can cause blur at all distances. When you get glasses that corrects for astigmatism, it will correct that blur in all distances. With that being said, you could still have hyperopia, myopia, or presbyopia that might need to be corrected to clear your vision up. But, usually when you get prescription glasses, it will correct for those as well.

    Watching this has made me realize Ive always had astigmatism and didnt know. I've always seen lights at night like this. When i got my glasses for the first time last year I was amazied at how the world now looked so sharp. I had never seen like this before. I went to a eye doctor 10 years ago and he said nothing was wrong with my vision even though i said i was getting headaches, he didnt even want to give me reading glasses. I bought store reading glasses. It makes me mad he was so incompetent. What's amazing to me is he is just across the street from my current doctor who is amazing. Great video and explanation.

    A very well informed and detailed explanation of what astigmatism is. Probably the best I’ve seen since being diagnosed with astigmatism several years ago. Although my prescription is quite mild I should wear glasses for reading, watching tv, etc. I’ve just been assessed here in the uk for a free trial of contact lenses so that if I’m going out somewhere formal and it’s low lighting or too much I have the choice and can just dispose thereafter.

    I have known I have an astigmatism (in both eyes) but had really not understood what it was. I had no idea that some of these symptoms were related to the astigmatism (pretty much every single one I have experienced). I have to say the big example you gave was Christmas lights. I love looking at Christmas lights but almost always I get a headache after a bit that will sometimes turn into a migraine and now I realize this may have been because I was usually not wearing my glasses. This video was incredibly validating as I was going YES! I have totally experienced that when driving etc etc lol.

    Very informative. I knew I had astigmatism, I've worn glass since primary school and I'm now late 40s. I've never really understood the full ramifications until a chance reading of an article this year in which it mentioned lights and night driving. The article showed a picture and difference between a what a person with astigmatism saw when looking at lights and what someone without saw. I was gobsmacked to find out to not everyone sees the light distortion the same way I do. It's one of the reasons I hate night driving, especially where I live in the UK on the narrow country roads.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I appreciate how you broke everything down and how easy you are to follow and understand. I have astigmatism but the correction in my glasses made it worse. I have major issues with movement like driving or walking. Feels like I'm looking out of a fishbowl. Could that be symptoms of astigmatism? I have an appointment with an Ophthalmologist next week because I've seen 4 Optometrists and no one seems to be able to pinpoint the problem. Also my regular glasses are very helpful and I wear them all day but my sunglasses (same prescription) worsen the symptoms.

  • @DrEyeGuy

    @DrEyeGuy

    Yes, this is actually a common problem. I have many patients that we purposely lower or take out the astigmatism correction in the glasses because it makes them feel weird. Other things could be the wrap or shape of the glasses, or the material and base curve of the glasses made. Have you tried contacts by chance?

  • @skinnychickblog

    @skinnychickblog

    @@DrEyeGuy I appreciate your response. I have not tried contacts, would they be a better better option? We checked the base curve of both sets of glasses and they are both 4. Must be the material. I look forward to my appointment now. I was thinking about canceling it, but you just gave me hope this can be corrected. Thank you so much!

    I have monocular astigmatism, was diagnosed with at 6. It's mild so I never use glasses except for working in front of computer screens or whenever I really feel the urge to relax my eyes, namely during spring and fall season. My usual and quite constant symptom is dry skin all around my eyes, which makes skin moisturizing and makeup quite an effort.

    Hi @DrEyeGuy Thank you so much for your effort to put up this video. My 3 year old was diagnosed with Astigmatism and Far Sightedness. Doctor said my son has around 7 diopters but has prescribed -3.75 for both the eyes since it seemed to be the lowest value from multiple tests done, because they couldn’t get an accurate test since my son was moving at times. My concern is - my son has been able to identify very small objects very clearly, able to trace lines etc. We have never seen him squinting his eyes for anything.. The values -3.75, -7 sounded like he should’ve had difficulty even figuring out facial features of us and differentiating people.. Could you please share your feedback?

    Great question. The trickiest part with you and VR might be the dryness issue. The eyes are typically more dry after lasik, and the VR headset can make them feel even more dry. Just make sure you use artificial tear drops and take breaks often and you should be ok.

    I’m about to turn 52 in March and have had VERY stable prescriptions for 35 years. My prescription in each eye was equal at -2.50 and remained unchanged until I was about 45 years old a few years ago. They are now only separated by -0.25 and yes, I realize that age IS a huge factor and have been nearsighted since the mid 1980s. “Standard” Age-related weakening of my near vision began only about 4 years ago and is easily corrected with mild readers. My right eye vision has givin me FITS for the last few years. SEVERAL eye doctors concur on my prescription and all agree that I do NOT have any astigmatism at all. I’ve even paid out of pocket for a comprehensive eye exam at a local (expensive) “eye specialist”. This is my dominant eye, it is NEVER clear, focused or anywhere near the vision in my left eye and has all but totally DESTROYED my ability to enjoy (or even participate in) ALL of the hobbies/ activities that I’ve come to love as well as even making work far more difficult. What do I do????😞😔

    I have an irregular astigmatism. I am 67 years old and have worn glasses for 15+ years. I began noticing blurred or ghost vision about 2 years ago and it only became an. issue about a year ago. I had early cataracts and due to my night vision I qualified for cataract surgery with lens replacement. My surgeon reccomended a toric mono lens and I had my first eye (non-dominant) done a week ago. The double/ghost vision was not corrected by this and as my dominate eye only had a slight astigmatism my doc suggested not using the toric lens but still mono focal length lens in my second eye. He is sugesting that my only hope to correct my issues will possible be glasses or contacts and more likely a GP hard contact to reshape my cornea. He is consulting with a top laser surgeon to discuss whether laser cornea reshaping may reduce my astigmatice to where the toric lens will give me good vision. He made it sound originally like the cataract surgery with the toric lens would correct all my issues and that I might only need readers for up close work. That is not coming true. Welcome any feedback from anyone with similar issues. Thanks.

    Will cataract surgery correct astigmatism (with or without corrective lense) and if so, will the cataract surgery prevent further astigmatism progression? Also, will astigmatism ever cause a lazy eye, if the correction in the glasses is out of date (old) ? My right eye can only be corrected to 20/40, and my glasses prescription is out of date. Thanks so much.

    Good questions. -The IOL (Intraocular Lens) implant does have a toric option that can correct for astigmatism, but it costs more then the standard IOL usually. If you opt for the standard IOL, then you can correct your remaining astigmatism with glasses. -Catarct surgery can prevent astigmatism progression, but mainly lenticular astigmatism. You can still have changes in other parts of your eye that can increase astigmatism. -High amounts of astigmatism can cause "lazy eye", but usually only during younger years of life. Can you only be corrected to 20/40 because of the cataract you have?

    @DrEyeGuy ~ Hello! Will this solve my problem? I have astigmatism in both eyes. I can see objects, but I dislike reading letters, especially on a monitor or my phone in dark mode. When I look at the letter 'a', it appears 95% sharp, but the bottom part of 'a' looks blurred or ghost-like. If I slightly block the bottom of my pupil with my hand, I can see the letter 'a' as 95% sharp without any blur or ghost-like effect at the bottom. This happens because I am blocking the other focal point, allowing only one focal point in my eye. Do you understand what I mean? In fact, I like the idea of Neurolens, but I'm not sure if it will solve my problem. Please let me know if it's possible.

    Hi! My son just came back from an eye exam with astigmatism in the left eye only. I know this now from looking at the contact lens prescription which only shows the letters 'sph' for the right eye and no numbers (or degrees...I was listening) for the axis. Now, I feel much more educated. The prescription states: "fill exactly as written, no substitutions". It also lists the words with a check mark or x next to each word: "disposable and toric" (astigmatism) with the manufacturer name, Vistakon and the Series as Acuvue Oasys 8.4 for right eye and Acuvue Oasys w/Astigmatism for left. Question #1: Does this mean I have to purchase only this brand and they must be disposable? Question #2: Are hard contact lenses not an option for him? Thanks for this video. I learned a lot!

Hard lenses would be an option, but he would have to go back to his eye doc and get fit for a hard lens. I hope those answers made sense. Thanks for the questions!

    I have a question, hopefully you still check here. I have a lot of the symptoms you describe here, although my eye doctor has only done Cyl -0.25 axis 10.0 on my left eye, nothing on right. Reason I am questioning my eye doctor now is that I see perfectly without glasses if I get a correct focus with my eyes, I can read bottom lines on eye tests without glasses and perfect even when really close. If my eyes get exhausted I have trouble getting focused, even then I instinctly rotate my left eye a littlebit and I see perfectly with my right eye. I am diagnosed as far sigthed, 1.2 L&R, and 1.5 L&R (glasses with different reading strenght). I have the full sheet, there are still some stuff left out in the comment. My question to you is, can you have the need for eye correction (1.2 and 1.5) when you are able to see perfectly with right focus, or is it an Astigmatism issue?

  • @DrEyeGuy

    @DrEyeGuy

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Hopefully I understood your question correctly. YES, you can be farsighted and still have 20/20 vision and see just great. When you don't have glasses, your eye focusing muscles will flex (accommodate) that 1.25 and 1.5 so that you can see. BUT, if yours eyes get tired and strained, it will be hard for them to the keep flexing and then your vision can get blurry l, or it will be hard to focus on things. When you get older, it will get harder and harder to focus without glasses.

    Hi Maggie, excellent question! It does depends on how much Astigmatism you have. In general, astigmatism makes it tricky for your eyes to focus, so I would wear them for when you are focusing on one thing for an extended time.....so I would still wear them for your tv and phone if you think you will be on them for a long time. If your astigmatism is pretty low, and you are not prone to headaches, then I wouldn't be too worried about being strict at it. Driving at night would also be a good time to wear the glasses as well. Also, I'm currently working on a few videos about computer eye strain and blue light. I'll let you know when I release those too. Thanks for the awesome question!

    Yes it is. Headaches would but one of the top symptoms of uncorrected astigmatism.

    I have some problems with the lights. For example, the light of lift buttons or light that indicates the number of the floor. I have some blur vision with these kinds of lights. Is it astigmatism or something else? Because I have these kinds of problems with the lights only.

    It's possible it could be astigmatism. It could be other things as well, such as issues with the cornea. Have you had an eye exam?
