    Wow. This brings me back to 1980 in my college arcade. I used to use the same strategy of flying my ship vertical with 1 or 2 asteroids left. By constantly flying vertically it was harder for that tiny ship to destroy me.

  • @DeeJayWheels

    @DeeJayWheels

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it's surprising to me how difficult it seems for people to master that strategy. I can only guess it's because of the coordination it takes of using all buttons rather than a joystick.

    @@DeeJayWheels No surprisingly! By the time a new player is ready to learn to saucer hunt, they already know their way around the buttons. It's knowing how the screen wraps that makes saucer hunting so much easier. My first saucer hunt compared to my latest is night and day. I would only fire if the saucer was directly above me; but now I fire from anywhere because I can tell where to aim to hit it. The biggest step to mastery is simply learning how the game moves. Rewatching today I learned I gotta use more trigger discipline. I noticed you only prefire when both your ship and asteroid are side by side or if you're firing over the asteroid, never into it while facing away; so thanks for that!

    I just found out about Arcade 1 up machines and bought a partycade (tabletop) Asteroids that has Asteroids Deluxe and I'm having so much fun playing it. It's been like 35 years since I played it, so I'm rusty but still it brings you right back to those teen years. Also picked up a partycade version of Defender that has authentic controls, that one's even more fun to play.

    Nice video. Back in the classic era of arcade gaming (early 80s) more than once I was able to exceed 100,000 (max score)on the first ship using the technique demonstrated in the video. I remember playing Asteroids so that the extra ships would stack up across the top of the screen which caused the game to slow way down making it even easier to play because it must redraw those ships and the game hardware was not optimized for that many objects to be on the screen. To make matters worse, Asteroids continues to add more ships into memory even though they are not displayed, and like many other arcade games of that era (Pacman, Donkey Kong, etc), the memory would become corrupted at some point. I am assuming that extra ships were limited to 256 (1 byte in memory) and once the number was exceeded, the number rolled over to become a negative number, and the game would crash causing a full reset of the game.

    I’m out here playing this every other day on my laptop and I love it. Love the fluidity, the simple graphics and elements, the escalation, the various strategies I can implement. Love the “machine gun” ability along with semi-auto. The random hyperspace gambles. I would love to see a new version of this just, slightly updated - maybe multiplayer options (ie two rockets in one screen), handicapped levels or spaceship types available, slight graphics updates - still simple, but more fluid. Maybe something like moving black holes to avoid or else they spin you into hyperspace instead of doing it manually. Game has so much potential.

    Back in 80 or 81 .. I rolled the score over 62 times and stopped right before the 63rd roll over. My eyes were burning so bad. That would be a score of 6,299,370. The highest score on Asteroids (Atari, 1979) is 41,838,740, achieved by John McAllister (USA), who played for 58 hours in an attempt verified by Twin Galaxies on 5 April 2010.

    @DeeJayWheels I was wondering what you meant by world record til I read your response on what a 5 ship record was. Back in the day this game was popular I was in a national tournament where I scored 25,000,000 + and was on the machine for a day and a half. I came in 3rd nationally. At the local shops I would get the score to be 99990 with one ship left then commit suicide by ship and die with the highest score. I sometimes would put ships all the way across coming out to the other side and then walk out of the parlor to the delight of the other kids who would have hours of free play.I would play the corners to kill the ships as my preferred method. I still love this game.

    So the old mame uses periods for bullets. Hard to see. The new mame uses a small diamond. Much easier to see. This is the first time i've seen bullets like this. Large lines with periods following behind (tracers). Where would i get this for mame? I bought Atari Arcade Hits in early 2000's. Was able to play forever using a game pad with rapid fire. My method was to ambush ships on the edges of screen. You can target him through the edge but he can't target you (fixed on asteroids deluxe). I never actually scored a million points cuz my hands got tired. So i quit around 300-400K. But i used a lot more than 5 ships. You only have to get slightly more than 10 flying saucers for every death and you can only bank 9 extra lives (revision 2). Havent played this for decades. So recently played on new mame with autofire and keyboard which is actually better than any gamepad even ones with backside buttons that i would use for thrust. I use the numpad arrows and set the up arrow as thrust. So even back in the day and esp now, i still cant even get 100K if i don't feel well. If you don't feel well, you won't play well. No junk food. Do some jogging. Have some herbs and stuff. Also this is the first time i've seen this on the move method. Actually i usually move a little whilst ambushing on the sides of screen but not always. Makes it a little harder for him to target you. 🙂

    this game cost me a few hundred $ in quarters to get good. But it got to the point i only needed one . Best attempt was for the world highscore - about1980-81? I forget One quarter- Played to about 9 million in 15 hours, the world record was 11 million at the time. Should have started earlier that day :( But it would not have mattered, as somebody got 15 million in 20? something hours a month later, then a month after that some dude (probably on speed) got something like 26 or 28 million. I think somebody got 32 million in 45 hours playing it as the highest score, but iDK about that record. The tactic of killing the little ship with 1 or 2 rocks left, I called "cruising", should be able to mow that dude down 1st or 2nd salvo (which this guy does), not let him get halfway across the screen, but the game does get "hot" ;) :) at my best , I could beat this record, I forget what I could get using the "3 ship" rule, as I got good , something like 220K, usually 150-180K IIRC(though could have 80-90K games easy) , depends on how mad the game gets at you LOL this 5 ship idea i never heard of. This brings back memories I will say.
