    I used to play this game everyday. One day, i started a game Feb 28th to March 1st. I cruised for ships, took a few b-room breaks, the pizza guy next door was feeding me. I played for 12 hours, at a score of 6,319,110. Got drove home by police. I closed the arcade. The newspaper covered me but i missed school the next day. I got detention. Haha. When my school asked me why i missed school, i told them i was setting records.

    I know it is not appropriate for this channel ... but perhaps another channel could do an analysis of the software behind this game. Perhaps interview the developer. It was most likely written in 6502 assembly language. It is keeping track of multiple objects, doing collision detection, calculation trajectories, figures out how to blow apart an object in a somewhat believable way, controls the writing of the vector representations, etc. all on a little 1 or 2Mhz 6502 processor.

  • @LyonsArcade

    @LyonsArcade

    Yeah it's definitely a work of art, pretty complex stuff even though the display is so simple. What's so impressive about it is how smooth everything is, the game never makes a mistake or glitches or anything. So it only has it's simple little gameplay, but it moves seemingly randomly and it always works right (nothing ever looks wrong, you never go through a UFO, there's never two on the screen, etc.) Very solid code.

    They're not that complicated, they just LOOK complicated. Most of the circuitry is fairly simple, there's just a lot of it, so you have to break it down into easy parts, which is why I did these in this order to show the way to do it.... the PCB repair is by far the hardest part, though!

    Saucer hunting involves speed. Get one of the slowest, most vertical moving asteroids you can and leave it alone. Thrust vertically, up or down, and get up the max speed. When the saucer pops out, let off thrust, turn and learn to time 4 rapid shots across his path. *boom* Turn back and continue thrusting until the next saucer pops. The little ones may be "smart" but they have a hard time tracking a moving target. Just be ready to slow down real quick if your last asteroid gets blown up in the action. Get good at this and 100,000 points will be yours in no time.

    I used to wonder how the game knew when not to put you on the screen too (when I was a kid), having coded for many years, I would suspect they're simply checking to see if the asteroids are within a certain distance from the center of the screen (where they game always puts you), and inhibiting the game from spawning your character if an asteroid is within that 'box' around the center of the screen. Using routines similar to collision detection. "If object is within this box, spawn enable = false". You could get a fancy though if you wanted to and calculate the slope and if an asteroid is within a specific quadrant (top left, top right, bottom left or bottom right), and the slope is either increasing or decreasing, you could determine if an asteroid is heading toward or away from the center of the screen, but I honestly don't think they're getting that fancy. I've seen the code, and because it's vector graphics, and there's no graphics data, the actual code is only like 4k, so it's pretty simple.

  • @LyonsArcade

    @LyonsArcade

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think it's more like your second example but if there is an asteroids near the ship, but not in the path of the ship, it will spawn you. I have had it spawn me before when there's an asteroid moving fast near the edge heading right for the ship though. So it seems it can't tell if the asteroid is far away and quickly approaching, but it can tell if the Asteroid is near, and is not approaching the ship, even if it's moving towards the ship but at an angle that will miss. neat little trick whoever coded it!

    Is there a reason you don't use the continuity function (the beeper, one setting below the resistance setting) for checking? It gives you a real quick way to check because it will beep with continuity.

  • @LyonsArcade

    @LyonsArcade

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Brendan; Yes, you can use that but sometimes it will beep when there's an ohm or so of resistance, or even more... when if it's a direct short like a trace or something you really want to be closer to 0 ohms resistance. So if you check the resistance instead of the continuity it tells you just a little bit more about what's going on. Continuity check is good for electrical work but electronics work I prefer to use the resistance check, it's just a minor thing though so you could do it either way.

    Really enjoying your videos. Great to see these old machines come back to life. One thing is bugging me a little: You might want to periodically warn people about discharging capacitors and being certain that everything is unplugged and de-energized. I know it's second nature to you and should just be common sense but CYA. I apologize if this has been covered, I'm not a big comment reader.

    I've never been too worried about it, I get shocked every once in awhile and it doesn't kill you the way people claim it does, lol. Excellent videos. I'm going to look at an asteroids for someone and feel much better about my chances now. Much better. I wondering the same as Bryan about the lack of high voltage warnings around the monitor. I was heavily warned in my limited monitor experience. I've seen some pretty big blue SNAP come out of monitors that hadn't been plugged in for a long period of time. Newer monitors discharge but most of the old ones relied on dirt for a discharge path. So I was told. :) FYI, your meter is fine. The .2 ohm you see on your meter is from the leads.

    Hey, thanks for this video! My Dad has an old asteroids machine he bought with his first payback back in the 80s and we've been restoring it recently. New buttons, high score save kit, and a new light starter to get the marquee working for the first time ever. The monitor works and looks great.. sort of, and I'm curious if you have any insight into this. Basically, the screen flickers. As in, the asteroids, high scores, and player ship goes from being bright to dim every second or so. It's not a slow flicker, it's instantaneous. It almost seems to happen at the same pace the player 1 and player 2 start buttons flash at. It's very strange. It's like the more objects on screen the worse it gets. I'm thinking it's probably some bad caps somewhere, but man I'm so not looking forward to recapping everything if I don't have to. If you have any ideas we could narrow it down to, I'd very much appreciate it! Google hasn't been much help, and it's getting harder and harder to find people who know stuff about this!

    Does it do it just a little bit or is it very drastic? That's the 'z' section of the monitor (x, y, z) which is the intensity. I would start with the high voltage unit in the monitor though and recap that, if it doesn't fix it I'd recap the power supply on the side wall of the game.

    @LyonsArcade it's not too drastic, at least while playing. The high score screen is probably the worst. The score list kinda flashes from brighter to dimmer in one second intervals. I noticed sometimes the positioning of text can get a little wonky too. The high score save mod menu is honestly the worst in that regard. Some of the text will actually kinda freak out and be drawn like an inch or so away from where it should be. It's pretty weird. Just seems like it gets worse with more things on screen like I said. The best way to describe it is like the screen is just ever-so-slightly unstable, mostly in the Z axis, but sometimes rarely in the X and Y too if there's a lot going on. Thanks though! Will definitely start from those spots and see how it improves from there! Thanks for the info!

Any idea what it could be? Appreciate it if you have any ideas , thanks

    Honestly... I know exactly what that is. It's the high voltage diode in the high voltage cage, it's the one that hooks to the Anode (the big wire coming out and going to the tube). You need to either replace it, or take it out and clean it so it's making better connection inside the little rubber cups that hold it in place. They call that "Blooming" it's a very common problem on the black and white vectors.

    When you've got half the screen missing it's almost always the connection between the transistors on the frame of the monitor, and the plugs where they plug in on the deflection board. If you take the deflection board out and look at the back of the plugs usually some of them will have cracks around the posts of some of them. If you had a serious issue you wouldn't have an image on either side of the monitor, the only way for it to fail like that is if one of the transistors isn't connected well, usually with a cracked joint on the connector. Needs to be resoldered....

    They could be your problem.... measure the B+ voltage when it looks normal, and then measure it again when it's all bloomed up, I'll bet the voltage is rising which could definitely be one of those filter caps in that can. You can replace those too, you just get ones that are the value listed on the side of the can, put all the negative leads to a ground, and tie the positive of each cap to whatever wire is tied to that cap in the can.

    You've lost deflection on your deflection board, basically in the back of the monitor looking from the back on the right side there is a flat pcb, see if any of the fuses are blown on that board. Google "X Y Monitor FAQ" and a nice document will pop up that walks you through how to check everything on that board and repair it. Your high voltage unit is working or you wouldn't get the dot in the middle. Try to not to operate it too much with that dot like that, since it's so concentrated it'll burn a little black spot in the tube that you'll be able to still see after you fix it, i'll bet if you look really close it's already got one burnt there, sometimes there will be 4 or 5 dots burnt in!

  • @LyonsArcade

    @LyonsArcade

    4 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure of the voltage, I've never checked that... usually it's not the actual capacitors, we need to figure out if a signal is being sent over the main board up to the monitor, or if there's no signal being sent so the monitor isn't turning on the deflection. check the voltage coming off the x out and y out on the board, if you have a voltage moving around (from like, -10 to +10).... If those are moving around then it's sending the signal out. Then look on your deflection board and see if the red led is lit up, if it is the deflection board is turning itself off... check all the fuses and if any of them are blown that's your problem. Unfortunately I don't know what voltage would be present on the caps there you're mentioning if it's working right, I've never had to mess with those and never tested the voltage unfortunately. ...

    There is a "Vector monitor F.A.Q." that's kind of like the Bible for these monitors and years ago the gentlemen that wrote that figured out that in this particular application replacing those with a 1uf electrolytic is the way to go so that's what we do. Tants and electolytics have different frequency responses. Sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn't. That's why you often see them in pairs with a tant and an electrolytic together. Tants are crappy little caps over time, but there's a reason why they're used.

It works very well but asteroids and ships appear larger in size (2x size) when they are displayed in certain areas of the screen. The test pattern does not have perfectly strait lines but it does look pretty good and does not show a distortion where I would expect. I have searched the web but have not seen anyone else with this issue. I would like to fix this issue but since the machine is still playable I am afraid of breaking it while trying to improve it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    If you check out this site it shows a bunch of repairs people have found :sites.google.com/site/asteroidsrepairlog/ .... They had a problem with ships too big that ended up being one of the Vector Data Latches, on the Asteroids Deluxe schematics it's at the far right of this sheet at the top: arcarc.xmission.com/PDF_Arcade_Atari_Kee/Asteroids_Deluxe/Asteroids_Deluxe_DP-165-1st-02A.pdf You'd be looking for a line that is pulsing coming in but staying high or low when it comes out of one of those latches, that's where I'd look first. The game has the ability to make the vectors get smaller (the asteroids mainly) as they get blown apart so if that gets messed up it makes things the wrong size....
