Wow, that's some amazing gameplay there for sure. Popeye is no slouch either, that game is HARD. It was innovative at the time for its use of really large sprites. Definitely one of my favorite classic games. Thanks, good stuff! 👍

For reference, "Revision D" is considered the "parent rom" for Popeye in MAME. The game loops its stages in a manner similar to Donkey Kong, but you don't get the nice "How High Can You Get?" screen to indicate this - the only way to know the order is to play the game. 0:42 - When gameplay actually starts. 2:38 - First round (catch hearts) cleared with 21,380 points. Note how easy it is to point press this stage by simply smashing thrown bottles (and skulls in further loops of the game). 3:57 - Second round (catch notes) cleared with with 34,030 points. Again, it's fairly easy to point press with the bottles and skulls, although another method is using the teeter-totter in the lower-left corner to launch up into the top-left floating platform for bonus points. 5:40 - Third round (catch HELP letters) and first loop of the game cleared with 62,430 points. The bonus life (40,000 points) is earned early in this round. Just keep smashing the vulture as he spawns for 1,000 points each time! 9:25 - Passed 100,000 points hitting Bluto on Round 6 (second heart catch round on second loop). 13:43 - Interesting glitch (?) on Round 9 - after Bluto uses the teeter-totter and his landing shakes the screen, one of the notes on the same level as his landing gets "stuck" (freezes in place) and stays there until Bluto uses the teeter-totter again. 14:29 - After clearing Round 9, the game goes to "Round A" (as indicated by the Get Ready message and counter in the corner), which is the ship round of the third loop. The game will cycle through the letters of the alphabet for the round indicator from this point onward. Score is 177,080 points. 52:32 - "Round Z" cleared with 692,980 points. Having run out of letters of the alphabet, the game now starts using other symbols (such as the forward slash in the following round) in the round counter and Get Ready message. 1:00:00 - Empty round indicator! (If you count the rounds yourself, this is actually Round 41.) Subsequent rounds go back to using symbols. 1:09:16 - First death at 907,220 points in second round with apostrophe symbol in the counter (Round 47). 1:16:18 - Both Player 1 and high score rollover at 1,000,000 points. The round counter seems to be using bits of sprite graphics at this point, as the P symbol in the counter matches the P you catch as part of the ship rounds. Second death occurs about 25 seconds later. (Round 52) 2:01:31 - Third death at 1,619,610 points. Round counter has a "dot" of sprite graphics in it (part of the "Thru" sign?) - actually Round 82. 2:30:06 - Second rollover of both Player 1 and high score (2,000,000 points). Round counter has two dots touching the extra lives number - actually Round 101! 2:37:28 - Last round reached before gameover with 2,101,430 points - the round counter shows a jagged shape that might match part of a character's graphics (actually Round 107).

This was one of my favorite games on Colecovision!

technically you did 108230 the MAX point is 999999 ( maybe in this game the MAX is 999990 ) however great game too bad the game doesn't have an ending , i hate this wrong choice by the developers

They should make Popeye for Digital for Nintendo Switch and PS4.

Fantastic game. I personally prefer it to DK. Mostly nostalgia bias, but i felt the objectives and enemies were more fun.

Why does the MAME version not include all the interstitial music between levels?

@ 8:35 weird,it skipped the 3rd stage (ship) and went right back to the first one?

I was able to only beat the first level of this arcade version,because this version is much harder then the nes version, you got surrounded and shot from every angle, theres no save spot, it’s hard todefend yourself or dodge those bullets, also why is it that only in the nes version i can climb up the ladder in the middle and not on other version in the first level?? So unfair.

Which version is this? I am certain that I relent a 4th level in the arcade version where Popeye had to fight the Sea Hag.

This popeye remake isn't the one I have, when you get higher in rounds my brutis gets faster than popeye & you can never be on the same leave basically, this is the weak version!!
