BOOSTING IN FINAL FANTASY 14? In the last few weeks there's been quite a bit of drama around WoW refugees coming to FF14, boosting to high level and skipping the story. Quin was the target of such harassment and drama. Now that the WoW World First Raiders Limit are also coming to FFXIV and boosting to endgame, Asmongold discusses about it and FF14 Gatekeeping while watching a video by

You know, I can totally get that. Final Fantasy is the only game I know that implements Slow in this way to my knowledge, and I consider to be pretty smart. That's not to say that other MMO's are doing it wrong, but if you asked me to say what a Slow spell was, it would 95% of the time be a movement-debuff, and nothing more.

I think this is only true for some Jobs, I think leveling as Samurai for instance is absolute agony, you legit are missing so much of your kit. BLM is fine past the first few levels, there's so much stuff that you don't actually use that you have to start with, but once you reach 50 BLM's rotation opens up a lot. Leveling as DRK, which was my first class I truly stuck with once I got Warrior to 50, was also horrible, once again you have a jank progression in the skills you learn, it feels more like I was being limited until level 72 exactly when Stalwart Soul is an ability I can actually use, rather than learning. Now keep in mind these are all classes I leveled and did not boost, I do agree that leveling is a very natural way to learn your class, but I also feel like the majority of the classes I have played have been very STRANGE to level and I did a lot more learning once I got them all to 80.

Part of the issue is it feels like the Devs want the community to try and help/teach each other (hence the mentor system existing), but because a lot of advice, now matter how nicely put is met with extreme hostility and/or threats of reports (which is technically within ToS rules to report someone for advice) so people don't want to waste their breath. Be it out of frustration for being ignored 90% of the time, or fear of retaliation. It's more a community issue so it's not something the Devs can do much about. They can try doing things like making the hall of the novice more relevant by updating it and making it a requirement. But since the large majority of FF14 players are extremely casual (and very vocal about it) it would be a bad move to their numbers and pain for their PR group if they did something like that because it would without any uncertainty be met with extreme hostility

It was a feature that much of the community requested bc of the lack of in-game information on how to properly play a role. Some community members have requested even more like an intermediate and advanced hall. However, I think the devs have said that figuring out rotations and such they want to leave to the players.

Yes other than Novice Training not much else really tell or teach you skill or tactics. But noting in many games ever do either. You at least in leveling and playing thru the story gets to grow with your abilities slowly and find how to integrate them as your progressing. @@MrJonne2000 Bad habits don't really survive dungeons, and you get dungeons very early on. Your party will complain if they see you Icemage RPing, or overhealing, or tanking without a stance. Nobody has to be good at the game. They have to be good enough. Not to mention something that hasn't really been touched on: if you do the duty roulette, which is practically required to cap tomestones for raid gear, you will be put in lower level dungeons, meaning people who pay to skip will have to learn different skills for different levels regardless. I don't have a problem with people who skip, but saying that it's in any way a better way to learn your class is a bad take. The best way to learn your role is through the trainer, the best way to learn how to play in a party is through the guildhests, and the best way to learn your class solo is through a deep dungeon. Legit or Skip, how you get to cap is irrelevant, but Skippers would not have had a chance to organically unlock a lot of those options, and they will ultimately suffer for it.

"Slow" is a legit spell in the FF series. It is used primarily by Time Mage jobs (but some other classes throughout the series have been able to use it and abilities with its effects) to slow the attack speed/rate of the opponent. Basically, it is the opposite of Haste, which speeds up attack speed. (This also applies to games using CT or ATB, making your turn come up faster for Haste, and slower for slow). So yeah, the argument for using Arms Length as a tank cd (snickers) is legit, as a 20% reduction in attack speed of the opponent can give you a relatively proportional decrease in damage you take. But I don't use it as a CD, because I'd rather save it for KB resistance. And yes, I do get yelled at for that on occasion, but those people can kinda suck it. As for the tooltip argument, those that are familiar with FF will read it as "Slow (the effect) will reduce attack speed by 20%". So yeah, I can only agree that if they want to cater to players that are not familiar with FF spells and effects at all, which is what tooltips are for, then yeah, I can see wanting to make them a bit more descriptive.

Funny thing about boosting, is I just ran into a boosted player a couple days ago while trying to do a quick dungeon for leveling. The tank was boosted, and just... did not know how to play the game. Wouldn't pop cooldowns on bigger pulls, failed to keep aggro, didn't do basic mechanics that the game slowly drip feeds you through dungeons and trials. It caused a normally 15-20 minute dungeon to take almost 40. There were multiple avoidable deaths and a lot of aggravation on the rest of the party's part when the tank completely ignored the rest of us trying to give them advice. You can boost if you want to, that's fine. But if you're going to jump into end game content and just... not bother to learn anything on your own, at least listen to the rest of your party when they're trying to explain things. It just makes everyone miserable otherwise.

To be quite honest, some group % of players don’t read, don’t read properly and just don’t pay attention and then some blame others, the game for them not reading things properly. While I do my self read and reread, I too at times have failed to read properly now and then. Recently I was playing a BLM as I normally play tanks having both a 73 PLD and a 52 DK. So was leveling my first DPS. It didn’t dawn on me until I was almost 50 I didn’t realize the additional effect of a spell. Occasionally an AOE spell would light up and trigger but no exact idea why, but I knew something had to trigger it. While figuring out where to keyboard place New spells picked up at lvl 45 training i was re reading my most used spell abilities. It dawned on me that Fire 🔥 I as additional effect had a 40% chance to trigger another Fire 🔥 spell on instant cast with no MP. I was like WTH and totally Facepalm self for not realizing. As I was often instead casting Fire III on long cast for massive damage and burning MP, it was my fault for not realizing this having misread the tooltip. After, it made my rotation DPS play much better though still getting used to being a BLM. If I had Boosted and gotten all the abilities all at once it would be a total overload to innately understanding how to flow with playing the class/job. Boosting is not cool in many MMOs, but it’s lazyiness of players why it exist or so they can say I want to jump in and play with friends. Many don’t want to take time to learn the game.

Yeah, the only time I have a problem with boosters is when they come into a lvl 70 dungeon first thing and haven't learned their abilities yet xD It's not that hard to look at a guide before just mashing random abilities haha. But even without boosts some people play the whole game without completely learning their class too, like Kou said.

I recall a friend of mine spending literal years trying to coax me into playing Final Fantasy 14, and I caved around the time Stormblood was the current endgame. My bro even offered to boost me cause he presumed the game picked up after ARR, but I opted to play from the start...I regret nothing, the story alone hooked me from beginning to end (at the time). >,> Also, grinding from the start and semi slowly introducing a class's skill set is the way to go when learning the game for me anyways. There wasn't anything overly complex when learning how to play as a Scholar. Might start a fresh character just to dust off the cobwebs and re-learn the game, maybe pick up Shadowbringers/Endwalkers when I hit the end of the free section.

A friend boosted me both MSQ and Job, I then at the risk of seeming ungrateful rolled a potato alt to get the "full experience" and fell in love with it, and that potato is now my main. The MSQ is a must-play, at least once. That being said, I will most certainly still boost some jobs, especially the ones that don't open up until later at higher levels, as I grasp things better when I have the necessary tools ready at hand to do so, instead of slogging through with an incomplete set that feels cumbersome.

If someone wants to boost through the story, that's their loss. My only problem with it is that I don't want to be in a party with someone fresh off the boost who hasn't learned common boss mechanics over the course of the game. If we're in freaking ShB content, and you're running away with a stack marker, I'm going to hate you.

There's more to using the skills than just reading the tooltips, I levelled BLM all the way from 1 to 80 and despite all the tooltips i did not for the life of me know how to play the job without using an outside resource like Akh Morning or The Balance. Same goes for monk, dancer, gunbreaker, and even my main bard. I don't advocate for the game to start hand holding people, but there are an absolute butt ton of core mechanics to each job, the content and general RPG mechanics that just assume you'll go out of your way to learn, and as it shows very clearly, a significant chunk of players don't do it and get lectured by other players on how to play instead.

@@colonelcorndog True, there is. But it is an MMO... and people should talk to each other to learn how to play. The social aspect is super important as well. Also, too many people think that getting advice is being lectured, when most of it is good natured.

@@chaoschris8194 there are plenty of sociable people in 14, but it's not their job to teach people how to play the game. Also in many cases, even players with lots of experience (myself included) don't know about important things in the game. It doesn't explain at any point that tanks can pull multiple packs and group the mobs together so people can hit them with their AoEs. The game never emphasises how important it is to do damage as a healer instead of spamming cure on the tank whenever it takes one point of damage. Furthermore, it never tells players that spells like cure I, scathe, blizzard I are completely useless after a certain level and to take it off your hotbar. The limit break cast button isnt even on the hotbar by default and on top of that, limit break priority is never explained nor the fact that it's a shared meter. I could list off more examples but it would take all day. Leading back to what you said, it's true that a player can just tell new people all this, but considering how crucial it is to clearing the content in the game at a good pace, it should be taught properly in the game.

@@colonelcorndog Oh I agree that FFXIV doesn't do a great job of explaining how to optimize your class, and how spells become just mostly useless after a certain level. But I will also say that no MMO I can think of does that either [Ive played EQ, EQ2, WoW, CoH, FFXI, FFXIV], and the collaborative effort is really key. Either by theorycrafting with other players or checking out guides. That type of community building is what drew me to MMOs in the first place. Also some of the wording is REALLY weird in this game... like "Magic Vulnerability Down", it's so obtuse haha. And yeah, it's no one's job to teach other players, nor should that be an expectation. But there are many who love the theorycrafting aspect of the game.

i will say one thing on going through the story, It introduces boss mechanics as you go through each fight, gradually. meaning that when these mechanics come up again and again, down the line you already should have a better idea on what todo with each one. but even then, if someone that boosted is willing to put in the time and understand each fight at end game, then it should be fine. Just good luck doing dailies i guess, cause going through some of the older dungeons that have gimmicky fights to figure out will be something to get used too anyway.
