Asking England fans what they think of FIFA's LGBT armband U-turn

After the FA announced that Harry Kane wouldn't wear a OneLove armband in Qatar as a show of solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community, we went to ask England fans what they thought of the move.

You wouldn't day in the 1940s respect the laws of Nazi Germany. That may be an extreme example but you can't just respect laws because a country made them. You look at them as they are, good or evil.

Seems that this reporter is trying too hard to *FORCE* people to condemn Qatar's laws. He's not neutral. When someone says he's against the laws, he makes no further questions. When someone says he accepts the laws even though not agreeing with them, he keeps asking questions trying to convince that person to condemn the laws, making the interviewed feel uncomfortable. This reporter's lack of neutrality is very clear and it seems he simply cannot accept that not everyone thinks the way he does. Do a better job next time 🤝

As far as I am aware Qatar has made their stance very clear from day one. I’m sure some of these western countries had their reservations but why was it not challenged back then. • @versi1098

I think many of these people have missed the point. Any protest regarding Qatar isn't about the country itself, there are multiple countries that have these laws and cultures, which we can do little about. It's that international sport competitions cannot be held in counties which have these extreme laws in place. That's the protest, otherwise FIFA and alike will do it again and again. It's not too late to say anything, this event needs to be a pain in the arse for FIFA so not to try it again.

You couldn't come up with a more revealing contrast of moral courage and integrity than between the actions of the Iranian and English football teams. The Iranians made a protest against something in their own country for which they may pay a high personal cost. The English team tried to make a protest, that presented no risk to their safety, about something in another country (which they knowingly travelled to in order to take part) then withdrew the protest immediately when they thought their participation and careers may be affected.

Who honestly thinks that armbands will make even the tiniest bit of a difference to the Qatari government's stance on homosexuality? As a Westerner who has lived in the Middle East for decades, I feel certain that armbands will change nothing. Nothing. You might as well ask the sun to rise in the west. Islam will not be dictated to, nor will be threatened by armbands. I imagine too that the seeming willingness of certain parts of the Christian church to adapt basic tenets of the religion to fit in with current thinking only strengthens the Muslim government's resolve to stick to its core beliefs.

It's simple really. Either mix sport and politics 100% or NOT AT ALL!!!! It proves beyond any doubt that getting on one knee for black lives matter has been a woke joke from day one. ALL lives matter and if you truly believe that, then none of these players would have gone to this farce of a tournament! This is an insult to any non heterosexuals, females, and also to the tens of thousands of migrant workers who died building these hollow atmosphere stadia, that after this world cup will be forever empty ( except for the odd beheading). This is one of many countries that have similar medieval systems in place. If they were really interested in football, they should have put the groundwork in and developed a decent domestic standard first, instead of paying corrupt FIFA for the shortcut!

I was a bit tired of hearing "you have to respect their laws". I totally disagree. You have to abide by laws if you want to avoid consequences or prosecution... But I don't have to respect a law that denies LGBT+ people the right to love and establish a life for themself. And it makes me wonder how many of the straight people who parrot "respect the laws" actually do so when they holiday in Dubai? Most tourists drink without an alcohol licence, and it was only 2 years ago that consensual sex between unmarried people was legalised.

Seems like alot of people missed the point of the armband which was to protest against FIFA hosting their biggest international sporting competition in a country that goes against what they supposedly stand for and what alot of the countries particiapting in this event supposedly stand for. Which is that football is for everyone regardless of race, gender, religion, sexuality etc. By all the countries backing out last minute over the fear of a yellow card it shows that all their support is just virtue signalling, they don't have the balls to put anything on the line for it. The same applies for all the companies that continue to sponsor this world cup and the celebrities that continue to be ambassadors for it. They don't care about the causes they supposedly fight for as long as they are getting a hefty paycheck and good media coverage. I can bet if the world cup was being hosted in Russia right now people would turn a blind eye to the war and go "but football has nothing to do with the war so it's fine".

Actually, you will find that a good proportion of the countries that are taking part in the world cup do not accept homosexuality and the practice is illegal. It is mostly arrogant Western countries led by the USA and UK, as usual, that are trying to force their values upon everyone else. If the west wants the men in their countries to incline towards homosexuality then that's up to them, but why should they try to force their values onto a population that disagrees with such a practice. It just reeks of arrogance and a superiority complex. You can see that the colonial mindset still lingers, even in the latter generations.

If people have a problem with Qatar than how the hell any country is going to host the World Cup if Only 25 percent of all the countries in the world fully legalized lgbt? That means countries we don’t agree with or have different culture than we do will not even bother to host. I mean if you think about, Mexico will hold the World Cup next, and today FIFA is being asked by some European countries to investigate Mexican fans for making homophobic comments in Qatar. It seems to me This isn’t a Qatar problem. Instead it is a western society problem using the World Cup as a platform to push their policies and culture on other nations with their former colonies being at the forefront.
