They were famous for intimidating Cantona at their old Al Sami Yen stadium. There used to be banners in English saying "Welcome to Hell" because the team colours all around the ground made it look like an inferno. I don't think United have enjoyed being back there, certainly this season...

Knowing Liverpool fans who've been going the game for decades have even said to me about how the atmosphere hasn't been as loud as it used to be, especially in the last 15 years. It's mostly because of tourist support and the fact that the club prioritise fans from outside the city as they'll spend more money on merch etc. It is how it is when you're a club of that size.

It’s because of all seater stadiums,it’s every club ,I go to the derby at goodison and the atmosphere there for a derby is nowhere near what it used to be ,anfield and goodison used to be like a bear pit ,also the game has been sanitised so no big tackles or fights on the pitch,football is not the same anymore

@@frasierfreak92 Remember going to Villa Park in 93 or 94 and they beat us 2-1, great atmosphere! But everyones atmoshere was great back then. Hostile, yeah, but in an awesome way. I'm not slagging my own club off, lol, I'm just saying sure, or making excuses, just, we're all footy fans and we all make our home venues the best we can. Anfield is legendary, Villa Park is becoming such a thing, right? And GOOD! Aston Villa, a European Champion. :)

The amount of salty and envious supporters of other clubs in here talking about the "myth" of the Anfield atmosphere is a little pathetic, there is nowhere in the world that has a permanently energetic hyped up atmosphere, not one. Is it overrated? Perhaps. I personally think Palace has the most consistently good atmosphere in the PL but they've also got a smaller stadium that lends itself to that sorta thing and it's not attracting masses of tourists like the Nou Camp or Beranbau etc etc. The Anfield atmosphere can be and frequently is one of the best in the country and famous the world over for a reason, you can be as salty as you want that your club isn't noted for such or held in as high esteem but it doesn't change anything.

I just hope we implement rail standing at Evertons new stadium. Bottom half of North and south stands could be standing. And 3:2 ratio if the law is changed would bring the capacity to 62k. With the steepest and closest stands within regulations possible, it could be the best in the league

Working class fans are being priced out and because fans are paying so much money they expect to be entertained rather than supporting the team. Anfield atmosphere is a total myth. They sing a song at the start of the game and will basically be silent for the rest. If they are winning they'll sing at the end of the game. 90 minutes in between those 2 songs and you'd hear a pin drop. For the grief City fans get I don't see much difference between the two grounds, Liverpool are the media darling though so it just gets ignored or worse if you watch on TV they'll actually boost the sound to make it sound better. They do the opposite at Everton games for example in attempt to "censor swearing", as if that's the real reason. Everton have the best atmosphere home and away for me, any fan can be up for it when it's going well but Everton are in the worst period of their history and sell out every week, dragging the team on to get results.

Absolute nonsense. Can't judge fans on when they're doing well. St James Park was silent for decades until the blood money came. As for away fans don't get me started, barely bring any fans up until recently, Newcastle was always the allocation that never sold out. Everton are probably the best in the country considering the fans literally saved them from relegation and now are the best atmospheres every week, home or away, despite the club being in perhaps it's worst ever state.

The subjective view of what constitutes an 'offensive' chant is very different to the objective act of throwing a bottle.

It can be great sometimes, it can be piss poor sometimes. I've been loads, most time the away end are loudest but same can be said when I've gone away, the away fans make more noise than the home fans. It's a myth to say a certain fan base is better than any other - just not true - but when we make a noise, it can go nuts. I just don't think it happens all the time (because it doesnt) but sure, when needed it's helpful. Again, we're just the same as all fanatic football fans. We all make a racket. It's great to create a cauldron in our ground but I honestly have to say it only happens when people can be bothered or its a "big game". Otherwise we get outsung a million times by the away end We used to just sing all game, then just sing when we were winning, then sing when wer'e losing - I honestly think we've forogtten to sing because we usually win at home and they don't need us. Again, we're all football fans and we're all fanatic. It can go crazy at Anfield like it can go crazy at any other football club. Now, being a Liverpool fan, I should try and say how great we are and awesome but no., I wont because that's not true. I do love Liverpool and I love Anfield, it's our home and we like to protect it like you like to protect yours. But no, the singing stops and it's dead most of the game. I have to agree. Never used to be like this but it is now.
