Asian Barred Owlets mating in Kaeng Krachan NP, Thailand

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I had just arrived in Kaeng Krachan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งกระจาน) on the first day of a two-day trip with my son and daughter when one of them spotted an Asian barred owlet. Fortunately, I always make sure my gear is ready as soon as I enter the park and was up and filming within a few moments. A number of other birds were clearly not happy to have this owlet around, but within a few moments one became two, and shortly after that the pair mated and I got the whole thing on film.... wonderful!

Fantastic footage I myself have a great fancy for owlets, smaller cuter counterparts to their goliath raptor cousins, to my knowledge quite a few species of owlets, especially the ones residing in South America, commonly live and bear young, in the hollow trunks of trees, out of reach for many predators apart from the occasional serpent that might slither up with malicious intent I suppose, I wonder if whether the owlets in Thailand might have the same tree- hole dwelling behavior?

I don't know about other owlets, but these Asian barred owlets typically nest in tree cavities, often ones that were previously made by woodpeckers and barbets. According to a paper I just saw, there is also at least one record of them attempting to nest on the ground.

@@thailandwild4897 that’s interesting, I don’t suppose it can be called nest parasitism can it?, I believe they mostly use abandoned holes, although I have heard about other cases of birds evicting previous owners for their nests, who knows, these cavities are not completely predator proof, I have read about cases in the uk of woodpeckers literally plucking out infant birds from their nests while their parents are out, I wonder if such brutish thievish behavior ever happens here!

Very interesting information in this link..... it seems that they will sometimes kill woodpeckers and barbets and then take over their nests..... www.owlpages.com/owls/species.php?s=2130

I was thrilled to see this pair of owls, especially as I had my son and daughter with me on this trip. On the way out of the park we saw a marbled cat run across the road in front of us..... their first wild cat species in Thailand, and my first sighting of a marbled cat..... we were so excited!!!

We have had two owls in our trees for four years now and noticed that they were not looking so good this year. We went to our local pet store and purchased ten frozen rats and defrosted them and put them about our back yard at sunset. Woke up and seven were gone. They came back two days later and all was gone. I really hope they had a fill.😊

Interesting..... I guess it is most likely that the owls ate them, or do you think anything else might have been lurking in the yard? I think perhaps if you feed them again, just one each per night might be enough. Do you know which owls they were?

@@thailandwild4897 They are barred owls and we had dump of snow so I think they had trouble finding food. I'm pretty sure they ate a couple. I like to think they ate them all but highly doubtful. I do love your programs 🤗

Thanks Lucy.... yes, I guess snow must be really problematic for a lot of animals. Incidentally, I have a lot of footage from the last few weeks, but it is taking me a long time to get around to editing it all. Hopefully, I'll have some new clips soon.
