As The Blade Turns: IOC Rules No More Russia in International Sport (Team Tutberidze News)

Спорт

Earlier today, the International Olympic Committee announced a ruling to ban Russian and Belorussian athletes from participation in international sporting events and encouraged international sports federations to do the same. The International Skating Union has not made a ruling on Russia's participation at the 2022 World Figure Skating Championships, but an email from Nathalie Pechalat indicates that the French government is about to take similar action. The growing financial crisis in Russia may also have an impact on sports funding and on future shows by Team Tutberidze and Tatiana Navka. I also break down the latest news from Nikolai Kolesnikov, Irina Slutskaya, the Channel One Cup and Alexandra Trusova on the latest edition of 'As The Blade Turns'.
On an extraordinary day which saw a rare display of unity from football governing bodies FIFA and UEFA: Russia were kicked out of the Qatar World Cup, with Poland given a bye to a play-off final against Sweden or Czech Republic later this month; Russia were set to be kicked out of the women’s European Championship in England this summer; Spartak Moscow were removed from the Europa League with RB Leipzig advancing to the quarter-finals, while UEFA also terminated a sponsorship deal worth £33.5million a year with Russian energy company Gazprom; The International Olympic Committee recommended similar bans be introduced by all sports, with the possible exception of the Winter Paralympics due to the proximity of the Games, which begin in Beijing on Friday; Russian domestic sport and leagues were permitted to continue.
A number of federations, including skiing, curling and Formula 1, pulled premier events out of Russia. European soccer’s governing body UEFA led the way when it relocated this spring’s Champions League final from St. Petersburg to Paris. The International Biathlon Union banned Russia from its events. The largest conglomerate of them all, the IOC, condemned the invasion.
One economics professor estimated the financial loss of the Champions League final could be in the tens of millions of dollars, a fraction of what Russia might forfeit from all the relocated events.

What a time to be new to skating! As a long time fan, I can say that while the ISU has been corrupt AF for as long as I've been watching (over a decade now), the fans are not usually so divided, the politics are not usually so harsh, and the competitions are not usually so bitter. The sport is beautiful, there are fantastic competitions that don't leave everyone feeling emotionally exhausted, and there are awesome fans and pockets of great conversation between fans from all over the globe. The sport has undergone massive change in the past 4 years and a lot of the conflicts from the past 8 years are boiling to the surface right now but no matter how drastically the landscape changes as a result of all of this, I hope that the beauty of skating and love for the sport will survive in us all!

Some American athletes, including figure skaters (for example Jessica Callalang) resulted positive for doping. Why did nobody shout that all the American athlets take doping?!! The USA army invaded Iraq saying that there were chimical weapons, but when the country was destroyed with thousand of victims it was found out that there were not chemical weapons. BESIDES Iraq there were other countries bombed and destroyed by the USA and NATO. Why were not American and some European sportsmen banned from the competitons ? Be honest, Dave!

I feel sorry for the athletes, some have devoted most part of their life to sport, every day they went out there to practice, depriving themselves of many things in life and now because of some psyco leader they have to give up there hopes. It astonishes me how easy people say "Yeah, they deserve it!". The government yes, but not ordinary people. It is very sad. All is very sad.

The athletes don't individually, no. But the issue is they compete under a national flag, and represent that country. Russia uses the athletes and various games as huge old school propaganda events, I mean this is an issue all around but you see it the most obviously in countries like Russia and China who really do use athletes and sports events as tools for national glory.

I wonder though, now that Russia is banned at almost every sport, will their athletes participate, if allowed to as independent athletes with no country and flag? I'm curious bc if they are allowed as independent, how will they be able to travel when they use Russian passports? Or wiill any another country be allowed to provide sponsorship for the athlete or athletes and give them special travel documents? I hope my question did not confuse yuu.

A little off subject but for younger folks who may think anorexic body types is what pushes bigger jumps. Go watch Midori Ito Japan and Tonya Harding USA. Both mastered the triple Axel (late 80's early 90s) while both had thick gymnast legs. They also jumped into the air and then rotated. Their jumps were as huge as their upper legs! Jocky bodies not anorexic. Also look at Frances Surya Bonaly. Known for her jumps with big thick legs.

It’s so sad, but something has to be done. Simply allowing Russia to compete at any international sporting event under a “neutral” flag or costume isn’t strong enough. It has made no difference at the Olympics ,where doping has been occurring for so long ,and if their behaviour still continues at an event as prestigious as this unabated, then anything less than a ban is useless.

  • @Dan-uf2vh

First off, the war - definitely ban all sport moving in and out from Russia. That is perfectly justified. Also, it is GOOD if they ban the current abuse that (from what I have gathered purely from observing media) emanates from the Russian women skating machine. What I believe needs to happen is that testing be made far more comprehensive and stronger, even if it raises costs, and also revise what drugs and procedures are allowed with SCIENCE and REASON behind it. Then we will no longer get the abuse that is this "peak in your 15-17, then you can drop dead and I'll get another one", which is what the purpose of anti-doping is about. For a few decades we won't be seeing performance levels like Kamila's and yet I find this strictly needed. What has bothered me and still bothers me is when you have in principle punished the one person that does the work in order to get at the system which you have so far FAILED to regulate. It would have been a terrible outcome for Kamila if it was within the context and as I've said many times she got far more out of it in terms of recognition than with an Olympic gold medal. Most of her performance was obviously registered from before the final and she has the option of either retiring or be given access to sustainable growth for the next several years instead of falling off in two. The shunning and ceremony ban based on a single sample showed unjustified extrapolation and speculation from under a failed testing system. It wasn't justice, it wasn't due process.

It’s really terrible.

Americans are allowed to do it because those actions were against 'uncivilised' nations, while Russia's actions are against a 'half-civilised', 'half-European' country like Ukraine. It is not my opinion but it is constantly said in Western media. So they simply discriminate between humans. Arabs are not civilised, a Slavic country is only half-civilised and of course the fully civilised can only be the West (either Western Europe or Canada/USA. Nothing else). This is how the tolerant and accepting West works ;-)

If you do not want to be separated from the rest of the world, you want to continue your business, you do not want to lose loved ones, you do not want to experience poverty and hunger - you have to start acting on your own! Now!!! Look at how it has had an effect on Russia so far, look at all the sanctions, blockades. Nobody will visit you for tourists. Nobody will start any business with you and many have already broken contracts and deals. If you do not stop it yourself, everyone will be hostile to all over the world. Understand it at last and start acting! You take to the streets, it's time to topple this wicked government. Do not be afraid, if you come out in large numbers, nothing will stop you. Fight for your freedom and a dignified life! NOW!!

You Polish people live in a dream world. I understand that you hate what the Soviet Union had done to you when Germany attacked you on 1st September 1939. But those times are gone and you should move on. You hate Russia so much since then that you can't think objectively. You are anti-European Union, anti-Russian, but you look at America as some sort of messiah which is a huge mistake. America and the West won't help you in any way, but you don't know this yet because you don't have such experience from history like Czechoslovakia from 1968 or Hungary from 1956. The West provoked revolutions but when the USSR attacked and suppressed them, the West closed its eyes and offered no help. The majority of Russians love their government and they have a good reason to do it. The land was basically in bankrupt state when Yeltsin ruled it in the '90s, while under Putin it has developed a lot. I was in Russia many times and continue to go to in the future. Peace.

This is only the Beginning I think, but if the ISU & FIG were to join “The Chorus” so to speak, that would be really big. Sadly, that would also require Major Restructuring of both Organizations, as Russia’s so deeply entwined in both & will that happen? I just don’t know. I would like to know how the Hell Russia’s Worlds Team is supposed to compete if France has closed their Borders to all Traffic from Russia though. Smuggling? Tunnelling? I’d sure like to know...

The Russian gymnast, Angelina Melnikova, has been wearing a Russian crest on her leotard arm or shoulder the entire time Russia has been banned from the Olympics. I'm sure she is made to wear it as I saw she had to sew it on during the gymnastics documentary. None of FIG's or IOC's rules said anything about the Russian crest. They only talk about the "flag" or "colors". They seem to be allowing the emblem and crest.

Can’t quite remember Melnikova’s costumes in Tokyo 2020 but you’re probably confusing the crest occasion/uses ~ i.e., I’m certain that the Russians have had the crest (in lieu of a flag) for several years (before Rio 2016 for sure), and only replaced the crest with the ROC graphic for that stand alone event, with the leotards having the crest back soon after the Olympics for the World Championships also in Tokyo last fall (this was the case for Rhythmic Gymnastics , anyway, but don’t see why a Federation should send their artistic gymnasts with a different guideline from their rhythmic athletes).

I don’t care if they catch a bus to the World Championships, the Russian and Belarusian federations and their athletes should NOT be allowed to participate, nor even allowed in the building. To hold a championship where doped-up Russian athletes are winning, yet Ukrainian athletes can’t even attend because they are trapped in bomb shelters, fleeing Russian troops, would be the scandal of all scandals. You think the Valieva scandal rocked the planet? You ain’t seen nothing yet. So FIFA can ban soccer players, but the ISU can’t bring itself to ban certain figure skaters? Let’s hope this World Championship has its sponsors locked in, because if Russians and Belarusians are allowed to compete, make no mistake, those sponsors will waste no time pulling out and gladly pay any legal fees related to breach of contracts (it’s chump change to them anyway). And allowing Valieva to compete while her doping case is still being heard would be the ultimate insult to injury. Fortunately Valieva was not booed at the Beijing Olympics. Had the arena been full of fans from other countries, make no mistake, she would have been booed. But in France, this is an entirely different ball game. (I am fluent in French, have lived both IN PARIS and in MONTPELLIER, the city where these championships are set to take place; I know these people. They have NO problem in letting you know how they feel. Just think Surya, and you have all you need to now about the French filter.) Be warned, they will have no problems booing the Russian athletes as they take the ice either. Also, their media is absolutely ferocious. Remember Charlie Hebdo? The same publication that was attacked by terrorists for mocking the Islamic religion? Well, that terrorist attack didn't slow the Charlie Hebdo publication down one bit. So, what makes you think they won't turn a close eye to Valieva and the Russian Figure Skating Federation? And they won't just cover her, they will cover the entire scandle with scathing satire that will send the Russian federation racing out of the country. And that's just ONE publication. So, I hope they know what they are walking into. We all remember the horrific images of Dorothy Hamill at the 1974 World Championships RUNNING, literally RUNNING off the ice, balling, in tears, because she THOUGHT people were booing her. Fortunately, that turned out to be a misunderstanding. The crowed was booging the marks of the previous skater. This time around, I'm afraid there will be no such misunderstanding; that crowd will be booing Valieva, et. al., and sending a message directly to Comrade Putin and his mini-me sidekick, Lukashenko.

Interesting. I guess the ISU needs to deal with the fact that their real problem is that Russia as a member of the ISU is completely beyond control of a supposedly democratic ISU composed of many other member countries. Perhaps we will have to do without the Russian ISU members until there is more agreement between Russia and the rest of the world as to how such organisations are administered. As a fan of Russian skaters, I will be disappointed but until the Russian ISU is brought to heel and agrees to the same rules as other countries, there is no other real choice. Russia has not made defending their ISU any easier by continuing its drug scandals. Then it gets a lot worse. Russia invades a neighboring sovereign country and threatens nuclear war. I do not believe these last two actions are the will of the Russian people in general or Russian skaters in particular. My disappointment in not seeing the genius of Kamila Valieva on the world stage at the Olympics knows no bounds. Yet the Russians have no one to blame but themselves.

UEFA (u-aye-fa) forced FIFA's hand. FIFA was going to penalize those who boycotted qualifying games with Russia. ISU has two options, which will both have negative consequences for Russia in the long run. 1. They have an option to ban them, which will cause rage and problems for ISU from Russians. 2. ISU will allow participation of Russia an Belarus in the upcoming competitions. Well, if they do, even saying that athletes will be neutral and without flags etc., they have clearly sided with Russia on this. There will be long-term consequences for them in sponsorships, organising events and maybe even boycott from other countries. Countries, that have been judged unfairly over the last decade.

Well in that case it seems unlikely that the Russian stars have much to look forward to on the international stage. Anna and Sasha are too old to continue performing quads for more than another year. Once their hips grow and weight increases, the heavily prerotated quads will become nigh impossible. Kamila’s young enough to sit out a year and maybe use the time to decompress, allow the world to move on from the doping scandal, and think of ways to reassure the world that she’s playing fair going forward. If there’s no way to do that, then it’s game over for her too. We’ll just have to wait for the next Russian miniature doll forced into bulemia and permanent back injury to wow the world with fake quads. How sad.

  • @Dan-uf2vh

First off, the war - definitely ban all sport moving in and out from Russia! That is perfectly justified. Also, it is GOOD if they ban the current abuse that (from what I have gathered purely from observing media) emanates from the Russian women skating machine. What I believe needs to happen is that testing be made far more comprehensive and stronger, even if it raises costs, and also revise what drugs and procedures are allowed using SCIENCE and REASON. Then we will no longer get the abuse that is this "peak in your 15-17, then you can drop dead and I'll get another one", which is what the purpose of anti-doping is about. For a few decades we won't be seeing performance levels like Kamila's and yet I find this to be strictly necessary. What has bothered me and still bothers me is when you have punished the one person that does the work in order to get at the system which you have so far FAILED to regulate. It would have been a terrible outcome for Kamila if it was strictly within the context of Olympic participation and as I've said many times she got far more out of it in terms of recognition than with an Olympic gold medal. Most of her performance was obviously registered from before the final and she has the option of either retiring or be given access to sustainable growth for the next several years instead of falling off in two under Tutberidze. The shunning and ceremony ban based on a single sample showed unjustified extrapolation and speculation from under a failed testing system. There wasn't justice, it wasn't due process.

  • @Dan-uf2vh

@Nathaniel Walker Realistically, Anna and Sasha got the same treatment unless Eteri & Doc wanted to push for a new experimental stage. This would not have happened if they were prohibited from doing so with proper regulation and comprehensive testing. The drug testing fails to stop unregulated doping and when by chance it detects something there is no way of knowing if it was an accident, relevant to either performance or guilt, and then WADA resorts to "drawing lines in the sand". I agree about 100% restriction under the current war.

It's obviously a political decision that has nothing to do with the sport itself. Such sort of discrimination against innocent athletes is unacceptabl. Especially that the West again uses double standard. An agresssion from the USA against Iraq, Afghanistan, or from Israel against Palestine never resulted in such a ban. So this decision is not against Russia's government but against the whole Russian nation, which - I repeat, is unacceptable. Not many will watch this competition, thank god. I'll be amongst them who will skip this. The ISU (and IOC who is behind all this) deserves the slow death of this sport.
