As The Blade Turns: Interview with Travis Tygart (USADA, Kamila Valieva Doping, Russian Doping)

Спорт

Travis Tygart is the CEO of the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and was instrumental in uncovering the Lance Armstrong doping scandal. I recently had the chance to interview Travis Tygart about the Kamila Valieva doping scandal at the 2022 Olympic Games, her ongoing case with the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the Rodchenkov Act and the larger issue of state-sponsored doping in Russia.
Any tip can be reported using the USADA Play Clean Tip Center, by email at playclean@USADA.org, by phone at 1-877-Play-Clean (1-877-752-9253), by mail, and now utilizing RealResponse, by text message using the short code 87232 (USADA)

    I agree. RUSADA should've had NO SAY whatsoever, including the right to suspend or not suspend an athlete. They shouldn't have even been allowed to handle the samples at Russian Nationals AT ALL. Only an independent lab outside of Russia could be trusted to gather athlete samples.

    I don't know about you but I suspect it's widespread at least in that camp. There's no way quad revolution happened this fast and this widespread. It's like every other 13 years old have quads or trixels. Even quad revolution in men happened slower and more spread out in all countries. As Polina said that it's highly unlikely that a 10 years old to have consistent quads let alone triples.

I mean I know that they're many drugs that haven't been banned yet (like hypoxene that Kamila took) and the pharma Companies plus Doctors are in the race to make stronger and undetectable new drugs. WADA is basically playing catch here. Unless the doping culture in Russia changed, I don't see this becomes better any time soon. Dave great reporting on this as you have been doing over this past few months. Your indebt analysis is well appreciated by a lot of people including myself. I found it very eye opening in hearing Mr. Tygart responses to your very good questions. But I have to say, it doesn't make me feel very confident that any doping ban will be issued against Russia or team Tutberidze unless there is a whistle blowing out there who is willing to come forward. Russia will probably stick to the story of accidental contamination from the grandfather, and since Valieva is in protected status she will probably be hit with just a minor ban or infraction. Eteri will probably get hit with either nothing or just a reprimand. However, Russia may lost a team gold medal as a result of it.

    In my opinion, doping within Russian coaches/ athletes have become a culture. Maybe not all coaches but from many interviews out there from different coaches, they somehow talked casually about doping and mentioned them as supplements or drugs to help athletes recover (in figure skating mainly). So they don't really see the drugs as performance echancing substance that would create unfair advantage. This really came through when Kamila was tested positive, many commented something like "Kamila is naturally gifted, without dope she will still win" etc. which entirely false because you wouldn't know the achievements she would get without the drugs. Plus the huge banners and posters. Simply by that comments and the banners you can see that many Russian still see the positive case as something not that serious which back to what I said doping has rooted in the Russian culture and views.

    @@evanperilstein5308 that is truly a screwed point of view. If doping is normal and allowed, it's basically a race between pharma companies and doctors to find the strongest drugs. Those drugs usually come with nasty side effects too. I still don't understand how they accept Kamila doping scandal by like placing huge banners and posters. I mean giving a reasonable of doubt is fine but not huge banners. Moreover I don't see any meaningful criticisms to ET, from some informed fans yes but not from any important figures.

    You didn't get it right. There is a belief or theory in Russia that the doping case was fabricated. There are a lot of unanswered questions about this case. That's why there are huge banners with Kamila to show support for her. I don't live in Russia but I don't believe people support doping and think this is right thing to do...based on what I know.

  • @yohanes2034

    @yohanes2034

    @@olgaa5791 it's closer to the truth rather than being fabricated if you look into the history of women figure skating. This revolution of women figure skating in particular in that school is unheard of. I mean quad revolution in men is much slower, longer, and widespread in all countries. But women, let's say there're talented one in a lifetime talent of women that can do it but every 13 y.o has quads. It's really suspicious. Maybe not the people but the coaches are too comfortable talking about doping. Plus the state sponsored doping and the media propaganda. I don't think I could believe that the coaches are innocent.

    If u are old enough to participate in the Olympic Games you are old enough to be held to the same rules as everyone else. If u are too young to be held accountable then you should not be participating. I can’t think of a legitimate reason why that would not be. This is sport and entertainment, it is not covered in The Bill of Rights or something. Play by the same rules or don’t play. So F*ing simple

    Dave, I hope you're taking a rest between these episodes. Again, I appreciate how you keep us informed with interviews with important people like Travis Tygart. Quite honestly, it seems that Russian doping has not changed at all. IOC and ISU need to ban them for more than one Olympic cycle; nothing has really changed. Hopefully, this case with Valieva will be taken care of the right way, Russian doping is finally caught and not swept under the rug like Sochi 2014 or even before when it really started, and the country will be rightfully banned for that reason, and not because of the war with Ukraine.

    This was a really fascinating interview, thank you Dave for really going as in-depth as Mr. Tygart was willing to go. I'd wonder if "someone, anyone" could be found who would have the answers to the questions you asked that he couldn't answer - like for example who decided to put an end to testing all the medalists for doping at ISU competitions, and why. I have a question about the facts on the Valieva case: Is the itinerary of the doping sample public knowledge by now? Specifically, when did it leave Russia for Sweden? Was it indeed "not marked properly as needing to be tested with priority"? Who first "came out publicly" with the information that the sample tested positive just 1 hour after the end of the team event? (was it the Swedish lab, which would be fishy, or RUSADA, which would be fishy in a different way?) I'd be very grateful if you could answer these questions, I still don't have a clear picture of what happened there.

    Unfortunately, the grandfather not having a script doesn't really matter as Trimetazidine(along with just about everything except hard narcotics) is available OTC. It *can* be prescribed by a doctor, but it doesn't have to be. It seems strange to the West, but in most eastern European countries it'd be akin to Zantac being a banned substance, showing up in Alysa Liu's urine, her saying it was from grandpa's drinking water, and people asking for the script. Although...a receipt of any time when grandpa purchased the stuff doesn't seem to be too much to ask for. You'd think they'd have that, or a Russian Walgreen's equivalent employee that could say- "Da! Yeah. The old guy comes in 2x a month. He always gets Trimetazidine, a case of canned pears, and some Old Spice _Bearclaw_ . It's the only scent we ever have."
