What 'mistakes' or struggles do you find yourself making?

Every single mistake holds for me. I think the most that holds me back is comparing myself to others. I watch people on social media who are so talented and it makes me feel like not even trying. I’m working hard to silence that voice

I think we all suffer from that one, no doubt. I feel the same way a lot of the times, but I try to just create anyway haha.

Same here. I used to draw so much during highschool, where it was no social media, and I had just one cheap pencil. I was happy with the outcome. Now I open IG, I see so many amazing artworks, I buy the art supplies, gather a bit of courage to start. I end up always in disappointment... How do you battle this 🥲🥲

My rookie mistake is giving in to burnout and lack of inspiration, and taking too long of a break from art-making. So, I can relate to your Rookie #1 mistake. After more than a month of no creating, I came back to my art table feeling like a total rookie. My drawings were stiff and, well, awful. My takeaway is to not take long breaks, even if I'm not 'feeling it'.

That's a tough one, I know the feeling too. I'm sure you'll be back to normal in no time, just need a few warm up drawings or days haha.

I do all three of these mistakes, also, I always jump into detailing soon without working on foundation of any drawing (especially with charcoal). I've been depressed lately because I saw someone else getting successful and she only started 3 years ago. I need to stop all that and focus on my own growth. Everything will fall into place on its own. Besides Art is a lifetime learning process so I have lifetime to keep improving.

This was such a nice topic. It's so important to acknowledge that we all make rookie mistakes no matter how long we've been artists. My mistake is that I always sell myself short. I've made much progress over the decades and it's finally beginning to show, but I still have a hard time "selling" my work. Thankfully, I've managed to consistently draw on the daily for the last two years or so and I finally learned to stop comparing my work to that of others. This gave me enough of a confidence boost to start taking commissions and to start a little YT channel of my own. It's tough out there and it's definitely not easy to be an artist, but it is certainly possible to overcome our weaknesses if we work at it. Thank you for the videos 💜. I truly do find inspiration in your work.

I recently had the same thought as you! I startet scetching outside when we were camping and it was really fund an relaxing and I said to myself "I have to get outside more". Now that wer're back from holidays it's harder then I thought to break the daily routines and grab my stuff to go outside. But you motivated me again. So thanks! :)

i love your videos man your attitude reminds me of my brother i always feel better after watching one. Social media and instant gratification as a whole is the bane of my existence, i also struggle with comparing myself to others too much too. What you said about remembering youre on your own path really helps, but i think my biggest problem is believing in myself. In the back of my mind i keep thinking, what if youre being delusional, what if everyone that said they like your stuff was lying and trying to make you feel better. Like my inner critic is just ruthless sometimes and i dont know how to escape. Deleting social media could help maybe but i think its deeper then that, maybe i have some kinda self sabotaging complex anyways again thank you and if you struggle with anything similar to what i mentioned, tell the voice to stop lying because youre amazing!

Thanks for the kind words, glad to hear that! Yeah for sure, I understand that. It seems like social media just adds to a deeper issue we have within ourselves, that we haven't addressed. It's difficult for sure but we just do our best. Hope you continue overcoming it and creating art :)

Like you I still compare myself to others. I've been creating art since I was 8. So 32 years at sculpting, painting, and sketching. And I still feel like a noob. In regards to sketching\drawing Its a medium that I've not played with in quite some time and it's really making me feel like a noob. I guess I'm also really hard on myself too. Like I can paint my cat, or a cool landscape, or something out of a dream. But I can't sketch my cat as well as I'd like to. And I beat myself up over it. Like I have this voice in my head that's like "you loser you can paint this but you can't draw it? What the heck is wrong with you? You suck." Maybe that's just me though.

I understand exactly what you mean. I enjoy painting trees and landscapes but I really need a lot of practice drawing them because I can't draw those that well either. So I can relate haha. Just takes time and practice. We can do it :) Different mediums are better for certain subjects I feel. Just depends.

Have you tried reading atomic habits? It’s a book that talks about how to create “routines” that sticks, I’m using it to remind myself to draw right after lunch

I think for me, consistent daily practice. For the most part I tend to do well with this aspect however there are times where things just get in the way. I'm not a full time artist so that might one reason why I end up not getting in the drawing session even if it is somewhere between five to fifteen minutes. I also make the number two mistake listed in this video, but over the years I've done better with not making that mistake. 👍👍
