Another great and informative video. Thank you! You mentioned talking about your art in a professional manner, learning to write about your art, and how to approach galleries. Can you expand on those? You talk about your art in a very conversational manner, and I respect that. But I find what seems to be expected by other artists and galleries you must speak in a very, for lack of a better term, fancy or art school manner. Do you need to know this lingo to survive as an artist? Likewise, artist statements always seem like they are very philosophical or existential. I like to make beautiful things that I hope people will like (and buy). I don’t want to make up a bunch of stuff to impress people, but that seems so common in the art world. Will galleries even talk to me if I don’t? How does a regular person survive in the art world? Thanks!

Thanks for the great question John. I really appreciate it. Artists statements are so tricky. As an artist you will have to write why you make your art. It’s ok if it’s simple at first and gets longer as you grow. The best way to figure out a statement is stand in front of your work at an art fair all weekend. You will get so many questions by the end that you’ll know what to say. I don’t think a artist statement is mandatory. It will come as time passes. I will do a podcast that will be out next Wednesday with this topic and dive in more. Stay tuned. Stay inspired. 🤙🏼

I’m with John. I know what I like; I’m not interested in readying artist statements. They seem so precocious and less than genuine.

Thanks! I agree. I’m going to make a video next week that will hopefully boil down the artist statement to something that works, is real and authentic. 🤙🏼🤙🏼
